The 3-4 solution

Most defenses now are hybridized. They deploy any number of formations. The Cowboys, for instance, often utilize a three man line in their nickel and dime defenses, which are used far more often than the base defense.
even more reason to get passrush OLB
are you not sick of seeing 3-4 DL and dropping 7-8, and the other QB still kills us after 10 second dropback?

We been doing the 3-4 from Parcell years all up into Ryans last year here. I believe we only had a top 10 defense, maybe like twice in all those years, with minimal turnovers. Do you really want to go back to that? Our organization has shown it can build an offense, but a defense... not so much.

It really hasn't been much different with the 4-3.

I'm pretty sure everyone runs a version of the 3-4 anyways. You see 3 down linemen, then a LB shows up on both sides to blitz, I've seen it in Marinelli's defense plenty.

Now a days, the power of the tackle is strength. The power of the rusher is speed. Speed vs strength. There was a day that Reggie White would own tackles, no way he does that in today's NFL. If you don't have superior power, you'd better be FAST AND QUICK.

The key difference is we can prioritize drafting the OLB passrusher instead of the DE.
The offensive is so dominant that we got a few extra 3-long stops, we would probably beat everyone.

A few things, Maliek Collins really has no position in a 3-4.

Also, not sure why so many here keep thinking Jaylon Smith is this elite pass rusher. Sure, he's an extremely talented athlete who can do many things, but his true talent was (and hopefully still is) as a sideline-to-sideline linebacker. He is much more Derrick Brooks or Ray Lewis than DeMarcus Ware or Lawrence Taylor.

This team would need two 3-4 OLBs whereas in a 4-3, we just need to find that one RDE.

Come off a 13-3 season and draft all 4-3 zone scheme D players... and you want to blow it all up and draft for 3-4 again?

Well it would be different if we had dominated the HOF game. But guess what? We didn't. Time to blow this thing up and start from scratch!

The team has been drafting well. Taco and Byron Jones look like high profile exceptions so far but Taco just started, he deserves time.

At the risk of sounding like a homer, Byron Jones is a heck of a football player. We'd like to see him force more turnovers, but he erases opposing tight ends in coverage and has done a lot of good things his first two years. I hope he's ready for a breakout season.

the D does deserve time.
my suggestion is if Marinelli/Taco/Tapper/Mayowa fails us in this season.
what do we do.
i believe mayowa, dlaw, paea are gone after 2017.
that is 3/8 of the DL.
if we are going to make changes, that is a good time.
only need to get a NT or 2 - those are far easier and cheaper than a DE

i dont see why collins cannot play the end in a 3-4.
same for crawford who was a 3-4 end under ryan?
thornton has played it also.
taco is 280lb and many said he will bulk up - does that not make him 290 or so.
if i remember correct, ratliff played NT at 300.

tapper can be moved to OLB on the strong side - he does have sub-4.6 speed and he has slimmed down since.

jaylon can be OLB or ILB.
If we draft a good OLB, then jaylon and lee can be ILB.

if we have jaylon, OLB and tapper available as blitzers, then is far more unpredictable than marinelli schemes - sit back and let the QB bomb us.

Idk bro.... with 1 arm.

Funny, Jason Garrett is the QB in that clip.

The 3-4 defense is dead. When are people gonna realize offenses primarily run 3 -4 wr sets??? Forcing defenses to adjust...match up? And if your defensive coordinator is just dumb enough not to match up...your going to get sliced and diced..as you sit in your zone defense...waiting for the offense to make a mistake. This is the loser brand of football we are going to get in 2017.

this presumes the DC is flexible and not stupid.
sitting in our zone defense is what we have been doing and the FO says what we want to be doing ...

Assuming we draft at #25, which do you think would be easier to get playmakers in their rookie year?

3-4
1. OLB
2. NT
3. G
4. OLB
5. NT

4-3
1. DE
2. DE
3. G
4. DE
5. DE
None. It doesn't work that way at 25.

And waste years of drafting quality talent that fits a 4-3 defensive scheme? Why?
