Well i think erod came up with the 4 year plan, JG has said nothing about any plan.
For the jones boys every year is a potential SB year, they do their fixing, and then expect wonders.
With Jason it is just do the best you can and see where you wind up.
Also Jason has input, but little control, so he just has to roll with whatever the jones boys give him.
He wanted to keep murray, but they didnt so he had to roll with randle and mcf.

All true stuff, although my fervent hope is that the Jones Boys will learn their lesson, pay more heed to those that know (like Will McClay) if they haven't already and allow their team to progress as necessary. Otherwise, they'll stumble along, perhaps come close but never get there. Granted, that's an optimistic perspective but if I didn't look at it from that angle, I'd close out my days as a bitter old fart -- (really don't want any part of that.)

For older fans we dont have a lot of time to wait.
Thing is the jones boys have been playing fantasy football for real, for 20 years trying to do what jimmy did in 3 years.
And they dont see a problem with that.
Jimmy came in built a good team and won 2 SB's, in 4 years, and now jerry and son have been trying for what 20 years
to build another team and cant do it, but they wont give up. They continue to gm and meddle in many areas.

If I were a HC, I dont think I would want to coach for cowboys, unless it was just for the money.
Many owners today meddle, and dont give the HC enough control. But Jones boys meddle more than most.
They copy NE or try to, but ignore how kraft lets others run the team, and bill having more control , which has led to more
SB's than any of the other teams.
Kraft doesnt meddle, and he just keeps collecting SB trophy's, you would think the jones boys would look at that
and say Hmmmmmmm ? maybe we should try that, but no they are too arrogant, and they enjoy the meddling more than they
do actually winning titles or SB's.
And when they fail they have blamed the coach, or like recently the players.
The message this year is darn it we could have won the SB, if it weren't for certain D guys, so lets replace them
and everything will be much better.

To me the handling of Romo situation has been about as bad as it can be.
If they had played Tony say 1/2 of the philly game, and he held up no injury, and looked good his value would have gone up.
Then say they are going to keep him unless they get a #1 for him, instead of all the other things they wound up saying.
if they wind up getting nothing that is pretty bad. But that is classic jones GM stuff.

I have had 4-year plans since around 1997, had roughly 5 of them...I am hopeful that we are in year 2 of this plan right now with a "shot" at escalation of such plan

I think the only plan they have is to build a new defense, which is hopefully better than last years.
They think they have the right coaches.
The last 3 Def picks havent worked out so far, Jaylon is a big ? mark, and Gregory cant get on the field, and lawrence has back
problems, but at least has played and done good at times.
A lot depends on how the draft goes, and what they have planned there if anything.
So the only plan is to improve the defense, and hope that gets them more success in playoffs.

The only change on offense, is RT and LG, so they will probably put lael in LG and Green in RT, but RT is the only
spot that is a ? mark.

They can get better on defense even without the 2017 draft picks.

Young players can improve (DT Collin, CB Brown, etc.).
They expect to have Jaylon and Tapper this year.
DLaw not suspended and might be healthier.
Mayowa was also injured to start the season.

I don't think there's any question but what the management has been poor. Therein lies the key element that must be corrected before a SB title has a chance to occur. Jerry & Son must find the wherewithal to allow those that have the knowledge to make it happen in the manner that Kraft does with his HC. If that doesn't work, then it's well past time to hire those capable of delivering the goods.

I don't know for certain if McClay has everything it takes to deliver the goods but my hope is that they will give him the leverage necessary to do so. If not, it might be no telling when or never until the needed change is implemented. Hopefully, they might see this before it's too late to get it done and we get further immersed in being an "almost but not quite" team. I'm just hoping it happens before my time on this planet comes to an end.

Of course. However, it seems like he is taking the right steps in trying to become one. RG3 grew an ego the size of Texas and of course his leg injuries did no favors to his career.
People that say Dak could end up being the next RG3, are simply not paying attention. Dak does not have the same body type as RG3, they do not have the same style of play. So if Dak fails he will not fail because he was anything like RG3. Now if people are saying he may just be a one season wonder, then I now understand what you are saying. Also it should be noted that RG3 was said to be aloof as pertains to his teammates. Dak is reported to be a outstanding teammate and leader. So once again nothing like RG3.

Say what you want...as long as Garrett is masquerading as the HC the Cowboys will never win a SB.

Hard to say. I can't help but doubt there's another head coach in existence who could co-exist with Jerry well enough for this team to avoid chaotic dissention. Nevertheless, I totally respect your candor. ;)

well people forget RG got hurt bad, and he just never recovered from that.
Had he not got hurt, he probably would have had a better career.

well McClay is not the GM, he is more of a advising GM/
If he was the real GM and could act on his own and just work with JG and the coaches on what they need, then the situation
would be much better, but the jones boys just cant step away from the table lol

Exactly. I had no illusions that McClay was actually a full-fledged GM. That's why I stated it's my fervent hope that they see the light and allow him the leverage to do what he sees fit. As it now stands, I can well imagine McClay eventually tiring of the situation and moving on to serve as the GM for another NFL team.

Like many others say, Jerry is evidently unwilling to officially award him the GM title due to his pride forbidding it. I'm not altogether sure Stephen shares that sentiment if push comes to shove and would like nothing better than to see him convince Jerry to reverse his stance. Would I want to bet on it? As it now stands, no. I'm still stubbornly holding out hope that reason prevails and for Jerry to finally overcome his foolhardy pride.

I think the young guys will improve with better health and more NFL reps

But I also would have signed Claiborne for the 5m.....I wanted to pay him a 3m base with 3m in incentives but would have gone the full 5m if needed..... he really improved and at least one year will bridge us to the next young guy

Would he fit in the philosphy? thats the question.

I would have been OK keeping Claiborne at 1-year, 5M; however, I'm also OK moving on from him.

Besides being injured every year, the other issue with him is that they limited the scheme to allow him to function in it. He was always good even as a rookie when he could line up in man coverage and not have to think about anything. His problem was that mental challenges caused him to melt down. Offenses would play little tricks and force him to make a decision. He almost always made the wrong one. They did some things in the scheme and with surrounding players in 2016 to help him. The addition of the new assistant DB coach and the promotion of the previous assistant made a huge difference in 2016, IMO.

Marinelli was known for zone defense which is part of the reason his defenses got turnovers. Claiborne was one of the reasons that played a lot of man coverage.

I remember watching Claiborne in training camp his rookie year. When they ran the 1-on-1 drills with WRs and DBs, he was really good, even back then. In those situations he didn't have to think about anything. Then he got into real games and it was just too much for him mentally.

The scouting dept. was unprepared on Claiborne. They assumed that he was out of reach and never interviewed him and I don't think they really checked into his mental makeup. Then the Rams called Jerry directly and made the trade offer. It made sense from a big picture perspective because he was widely regarded to be the best defensive player in that draft. Unfortunately, the Cowboys didn't realize that not only did he have significant learning problems, he was emotionally weak and couldn't play through injuries and eventually lost confidence. It probably didn't help that Scandrick was always reaming him for being a dummy.

I have a lot of confidence in the now 2nd year CB Brown. Scandrick worries me a little. He was not the same last season after returning from his blown out knee. I expect Brown and Scandrick to be the starters with either Carroll or a draft pick being the 3rd CB. I'm OK with that starting lineup, but the lack of depth is a concern.

I think McClay is very close to having full GM authority. The approach that they've taken the last few years is not how Jerry would do it himself. Jerry's main involvement seems to be in influencing the 2nd round picks; however, McClay had Gregory and Jaylon as potential picks there even without Jerry's involvement. Jerry has not pushed for any picks that were not on the draft board in those spots, so I don't know what would have happened without Jerry's input.

The approach to free agency and letting players move on is also not how Jerry would do it. Jerry for years would make splash moves and hold on to players way too long. They're not doing that now.

Good to see that there are others besides myself holding out hope for Jerry to step back and allow others aggressive talent acquisition. I'm seeing some hints that suggest the same. There have been at least some indications that Jerry is allowing McClay some measure of freedom to strongly recommend, if not actually select, player talents that appeal to him. Hopefully, that might continue to be the case.

Twenty years of frustration over missing the boat on fielding championship teams should rightfully call for a change in philosophy. I'm also somewhat encouraged that Jerry has recently promised that he won't be amenable to welcome players that seem likely candidates to miss considerable time before taking an active role on the team. Perhaps our lack of immediate success with early round injured players has awakened a realization in him that there may be a more desirable route to take in the future. We'll soon see if this intention materializes. Let's hope so.
