you confuse cap management with average value. 4 years ago everyone said we can't compete and sign anyone if we pay Dak 160M contract. three years ago his cap hit was 17M, then 19M, then 26M, of course now 59M, but that's the point. at some point everyone pays the price, but you can manage the cap. in the meantime we handed out top 5 contracts to lawrence, Diggs, Smith, Martin, Zeke, Steele, Cooper (then traded) and tagged Pollard. not only that, we had 20M on the cap two years ago (after dumping Cooper) and about 15M last year before signing Diggs.

how many top 5 contracts do we want/need?

managing and building a team is a skill Joneses don't have. managing the cap is the easy part.
Not for them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just waiting for this rumor to be real. I’ll be waiting a long time I suppose.
Not going to happen in 2024.
Raiders signed Gardner Minshew last month (2 years for $25M, $15M guaranteed) to compete with incumbent starter Aidan O'Connell (10 starts as a rookie last season).
New GM + HC duo Tom Telesco and Antonio Pierce aren't starting out by sending significant draft capital out for Prescott.
Both still left the door open for a QB to be drafted when the proceedings get started in Detroit on Thursday.

The team with the most cap space remaining by far is the Patriots; and from what I read, they aren't keen on staying at no. 3 and picking a QB.
But if they trade down, Prescott won't be their goal...basically a start over with defacto GM and HC Belichick out the door after a 4-13 season.

Would Dallas get a # 1 in return ? Based on an 8 yr starter who’s stayed fairly healthy . If it’s a pick in the top 15 plus you have 24 got to do it .

LV would need to negotiate an extension for Dak, before the trade.

They would risk losing their ROI.

It would be a very complicated trade.

Odds are we cut Dak after the draft.

Take the $29 million in cap savings and run.

Then Jerry can Post June cut Dak.

Dak loses his 2024 base salary.

Dak can skip the embarrassment by doing the trade.
Dak wants to be a free agent. The sooner, the better. How is Dak getting what he wants going to embarrass him? Surely Dak’s agent and Dak have discussed the different scenarios in deference to his future. If the Cowboys are not going to offer him a contract he thinks is appropriate becoming a free agent is his best option. Jerry may not negotiate directly with Dak. He may only negotiate with Todd France. This is not about legacy. It is not about the Cowboys’ success in any playoffs. It is not about a trade. It is not about how it looks. It is about money. The same as it is for every player.

Yep, teams (with CAP space) aren't going to trade draft capital for one year of Dak. There's also no way Dak would want to be in the cold and poor NE, whilst learning a new offense.
He's going nowhere in a trade.

Nobody wants this fraudulent loser. With all the questions regarding whether Jones will resign him, interested teams would already have been reaching out, regardless of NTC to see if something could be worked out, and that info would have leaked out to the media.

Nobody really see's the possibility of a trade (way too many moving parts), but it's a part of the necessary 'negotiation process' (whether we want him back or not).
The process has taken a step further with the Dak comment/olive branch/PR soundbite about 'not NESSARILY being the top paid QB'

Yep. Someone said Dak wants to hit fee agency. No he doesn’t. He just wants to be paid. If he believes in his skills and others do he would’ve requested a trade and been sought for, respectively, but he wants to stay in Dallas because no one else desires him and it serves him and the millions of dollars extra he gets from milking being the Dallas Cowboys QB both locally and nationally. The NFL is a small neighborhood — word gets around about players among peers, coaches, management, etc.

Raiders Broncos
With regards to the Raiders....read post #1,023.

And with Broncos - two major impediments from the Russell Wilson fiasco:
1) Denver has to absorb an $85 million dead cap hit over the next two years $35.4 million in 2024, $59.6 million in 2025).
2) They gave up two 1st round, two 2nd round, and one 5th round pick in that trade; Broncos aren't going to give up what Dallas will want for Prescott.

Denver has the 12th pick on Thursday night...so a rookie that will be a fit fo Sean Payton's offense could be the better way to go..and may sign a stopgap veteran so the newcomer ease his way into the league (Brissett, Tannehill, Taylor, Winston).

Not sure that would be an embarrassment. Honestly as a free agent Dak probably makes more than his current base salary for 2024.

Then this guy can hold the title of only “elite” QB in his prime to get cut by his team after 8 years of baby-sitting and hand-holding..

Jerry should trade “franchise QB” Dak to a bum franchise as the “elite” QB he is to resurrect a bottom dwelling franchise that plays in an open-dome stadium that also plays in cold weather…
