The case for blowing it up

First let me state that I think Tony Romo is a great QB and he is absolutely capable of winning a SB with the right team. I just don't think the Cowboys are that team right now.

So what would you think about this:

We blow it up in 2014. The Cowboys are a pretty young team with the exception of Romo, Ware and Witten. Let's say we trade Tony for a late first (KC?) or an early 2nd and another pick (Hou?), we trade Witten for a 3rd (NE, Atl, KC) and we cut or trade Ware. That would give us an additional 3 or 4 high picks and help us a lot capwise.

In free agency, I would do absolutely nothing and would let Hatcher and Spencer go, that would give us some comp picks for the next year.

In the Draft, we go heavy on the front 7 on the Defensive side and unless one of the top 3 QBs falls to us in the first we draft one in the 3th, 4th round (Boyd, McCarron).

That leaves us with 1 rookie QB and 4 or 5 new defensive players on the defense in the first 3 rounds of the draft. The rest I assume will be safeties from small schools.

We head into training camp with the same offense minus Tony and with 3 or 4 new young starters on the defense and a much better cap situation. And here's the thing, we start the rookie QB the whole season.

Now two things can happen, if the rook is any good we probaly get another 8-8 season but with a huge upside. If he is bad we probably have a top 5 pick in 2015 and we get Winston or whoever is the top QB. If that is the case we should also have a new coaching staff (wooo).

We then go after 2 or 3 top free agents plus the Draft and are ready to roll in 2015.

What do you guys think?

there is no such thing in football.
and tony is untradeable.
Also in my opinion… the cowboys have no "Big Three"

The boys just have to draft well and make solid talent based decisions on the coaching and free agent side. Something that has not been done efficiently for awhile.

Why trade a QB who was playing hurt all year, yet put up 31 TD and only 10 picks? I don't get it.

This is not just about Tony, as I said before, he is great, he is our best player but is getting up there in age. This is more about the future of the team and their cap situation.

We already paid Tony the bulk of his guaranteed money, I think he is scheduled to make only 8 million next year.

How was he hurt all year??? According to folks in here, the back injuries were unrelated. According to JJ, it didn't happen until the Commander game.....coughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I think some have forgotten what a non-franchise QB looks like. You don't trade him now. And not in the next few unless he declines.

All players are leased now. You just have to be better at it than the average bear.

I agree but I'm just thinking about how much time he has left and the state of the team right now. And I'm not saying I would absolutely do this but would not be mad if they did.

I know a few 8-8 seasons isnt exactly anything to brag about, but blow it up?

Good draft, healthy roster and smart offseason moves and there is no reason this team cant compete.

I would totally hate this. Even if it were possible under our cap.

If we are going to keep trainee Garrett we might as well blow it up. Maybe he will learn how to coach by the time the young guys gain some experience.;)

Good idea. Just like Mike Zimmer apparently did. That guy got so much smarter in just a few years away from the Cowboy Faithful.

Yep.

While the concept of "blowing it up" may sound enticing, given the cap and contract lengths you can't "blow up"... it's more like "remodel".

Plus many fans would have a kanipshin.

I'm a Yankees fan and while they didn't "blow it up" last season they went cheap after losing so many regulars to injury and what-not. The result was that the fan base knew from the get-go that the team didn't have a chance. TV ratings took a beating and home attendance dropped by almost 10%.

I don't think the Cowboy's brain trust would go that route.

Yeah, like 8-8. People act like Tony's the only QB out there when every year, different QBs take their teams to the playoffs and the Super Bowl.

I'm also someone who wants to blow this crop of mediocrity up. I get no joy out of being right there in the middle every year with no hope of getting better. I just want better than .500, and I know most fans want that too.
These next couple of years are crucial to the success of the future. 5 years ago, people said, let's add this let's add that, let's get rid of him and him. We did that. 4 years ago, people were like, if we just add this and subtract this, we're destined. 3 years ago, people said, let's add this, and cut that, and fire him. 2 years ago, same thing, last year, same thing. At what point do we start over?

this is incorrect on all accounts.

nfl caps do not work on a cash basis, they work on an accrual basis.

and he is scheduled to make like $20 mil next year

I guess I should have said "IMO". He had two separate back problems this year requiring surgery sandwiched around some seriously bruised ribs which required numbing for him to play effectively. So, there may have been some time during the season when he was 100%, like maybe the Denver game, but the guy who "could make all the throws" was having problems getting the ball down field most of the season, and it showed in his yards per attempt drop-off.

Having said that, even if I knew we were getting the exact same Romo back next season, I still wouldn't dream of trading him until we have someone who can beat him out, making him too expensive to carry as a backup.

And you don't remember that Jerry did not try to find a legit QB either. He lucked in to Romo. And Romo was really just a good QB, not a Super Star QB. Jerry puts all his energy in to guys like Dez and Felix, and Claibourne. He doesn't even care about the QB position. He thinks just because a guy puts of multiple 300 yard passing games, he's found a QB. Pulease. If Jerry ever decides to go first round on a QB inside of 2 decades, then call me.
