The costly Lance trade

Statistically, I don't think there much difference in player talent drafted in rounds 4-7. Teams are pretty much guessing on players at this point in the draft. Furthermore, a surprising number of undrafted free agents have a better chance of making the team than players drafted in rounds 4-7. Undrafted free agents can pick their team of choice with the best opportunity of getting practice and playing time and making the team.

In hindsight, Lance didn’t make sense either.

But I think the clear pattern is an owner who repeatedly tries to ‘game the system’ where he thinks he’s acquiring talent at a discount.

Whether that be drafting questionable characters like Randy Gregory, or injured players like Jaylen Smith, to name but a few.

Now he trades for proven busts like he thinks he knows better. And the (lack of) results clearly proves that he doesn’t.

But when there’s no accountability, it’s merely someone else’s problem.
There’s probably a lot to that. It’s what he resorts to when he feels like playing with his toy.

‘Hey I remember that name from a couple of drafts ago’ not taking into account that many players fully bust. He just took on two of them for 4ths when other teams are swapping a 6th for a 7th for similar players.

McClay may have been the worst thing to happen to this team. Without him Jerry would probably have already been in full ruin and have to stop playing in the father and son fantasy league.

Instead we beat the bad teams and most of the middling teams, and one decent one here and there and wallow in full mediocrity with no end in sight because they think they are “close.” They are nowhere near being able to compete with the top teams in the league, and cannot recognize that because they in way over their heads.

Not a problem exclusive to the Cowboys.

Even though most Cowboys fans want to think so.
Thats true however part of the problem is that Jerry is one of those GMs that overvalue their picks because HE PICKED THEM.

Now that is also a problem that a few other GMs have but not at the rate Jerry Does.

Mazi Smith would absolutely be in Belichicks dog house by now if he selected him but we all know that Mazi will coast here for 4 years and Jerry will probably overpay him to resign him.

The experiments with failed and pre-injured draft picks is also one of his proclivities that seldom pan out.

I know others probably disagree, but I would never trade draft picks unless it was for higher picks or a larger quantity of picks, especially in today’s NFL.

The only exception would be if the team is having a great season and loses a key player, but even then it would have to be a player that is vital and not replaceable by another player already on the team.
I would trade our 2nd round pick every year. We're just gonna get a backup TE with it.

Well, we don't really know how good Lance is. This organization is so bad at talent evaluation sometimes that he could be the next Mahomes and they would refuse to play him .... just like they are doing. Or he could have "offended" one of the overlords and has been blacklisted.

Rush deserves the opportunity & I am happy to see him doing well so no issue from me there. But there were some lanes last night that I would have loved to have had Trey's athleticism to exploit.
We know how good Trey Lance is. He's been on 2 NFL teams now and couldn't beat out the backup on either.

I don’t have a problem with the trade, but either the pro scouting department crapped the bed on their evaluation, or the front office and coaching staff didn’t communicate well. Either way, it was a big mistake.

The biggest problem with Mazi is they think they have sufficiently invested in the position. A player busting is not at all possible in their world since they “draft so well” and surround themselves with people that reinforce that.

We've made some bad decisions with draft picks the last couple of years that is really hurting this team.

Mazi, Guyton, Schoonmaker, Lance, Mingo.

Team We Always Draft Well needs to get it together.

Jerrah doing Jerrah things. No money for free agents and giving away picks for a third string QB and a receiver who is invisible should help.

And the rams have a SB win and two NFC championships in the last decade. Wouldn’t we be willing to exchange some draft picks for that? Problem is we don’t have a front office capable of even knowing how to do that.
I thought the front office traded Walker for picks and won 3 Super Bowls.

Or a player that can actually play. Like we did with Gilmore. Trading for unknowns is too risky.

Are you serious? That was 100% Jimmy Johnson, to the point without him it would have never happened.. He did all that. Jerry’s involvement was to approve it.

Jimmy Johnson had it in his contract that he had full control of personnel, discipline, trades, etc. A clause in his contract that no Cowboys coach has had since.

And regarding those 3 SBs…Jerry deserves the most credit he’s ever earned - but it was for hiring a great HC and letting that HC do his job. THAT was Jerry’s role. But his ego won’t allow that ever again. And we have suffered for It ever since.

Put it another way - the Cowboys won 7 playoff games including 2 SBs and 2 NFC championships in the 5 years Jimmy was HC here. Since the Cowboys won it all in ‘95…the last 29 years…under Jerry’s dominance…we are 4-13 in the playoffs. That says it all.

Come on now Risen, Bucky would not be playing over Zeke. He would be getting the Deuce treatment.

There you go and Jimmy didn't win anything in Miami.
