I think it is toxic and it has been toxic for a while. Dak is not the only reason.. there were issues well before he came along but Dak captures why this franchise is not going anywhere.
How Dak perfectly captures our ineptitude:
So we recruit Dak in the 4th.. This highlights how we have tried to continually cheat on the most important position in the sport (perhaps the most important individual position in all of team sports). Even though Romo was having injury issues, we had no viable back ups in place and hadn't recruited his successor or even tried.
We keep Dak as starter even when Romo is healthy: Jerry and Carrot loved the whole fairytale story. They loved the jersey sales. They loved the thought of 'greatness' and did not pay attention to the play. Did not pay attention to the fact that it was Zeke that was carrying the offence. Did not notice that we were playing with a reduced playbook against weakened oppo. Did not even give Romo a CHANCE to get back his position by even getting reps with the first string at practise.
We don't draft anyone to be behind Dak... so best case scenario we 'caught lightning in a bottle' with Daks rookie season.. Romo departs.. do we attempt to get some back up/competition for Dak? Nope.. we instead decide, after 16 games, that we have found 'the one' and then ignore the QB position for at least the next 8 drafts. Dak doesn't face a day of competition for his position during his 8 year + tenure.
We pay Dak waaaaaay too much money... so because we didn't recruit back up and don't have a plan.. we allow Dak and his manager to bend us over and sign a contract that will decimate the team with the added bonus of a no trade clause. We essentially hand the keys to the entire kingdom to a guy that has done exactly squat.
We still commit to Dak even though he has produced nothing.. So even after yet another playoff disaster.. another crushing loss.. and almost the entire football world now understanding that Dak is crap.. our FO recommits to him publicly and makes it clear that he will be re-signed and on huge money. Situation normal.
So no, Dak isn't the only reason why we have sucked for 30 years.. but boy does his 'career' at Dallas give you a great insight into why we suck. Dak is a B grade back up QB that we have paid like an elite franchise QB, not recruited successor or competition and have continued with this charade as it sells jerseys.
