One player isn’t going to get us a SB.. would he be a upgrade? Yes.
Conventional wisdom in the NFL says the absolute best time to compete and win titles is with a good QB on a rookie contract. We have that. This year and next. This is the time to strike. Yet Jerry and son are content to with the status quo. Content to roll out scrubs at safety instead of spending the $. The money saved on Dez’s contract pays for Earl. Earl makes this defense a top 5 unit. Who cares that we give up a third. A third rounder is what got us Chaz Green. Spend the damn money.
Dallas is NOT a legitimate SB contender. Mortgaging the future for this current team would be a waste. They are actually doing the right thing by being conservative. They finally have cleared some nice cap space going into next season. A better time to play FA if we need a piece or two.
i agree .Agreed. They have a sterling record with FAs and it is only year 9 of the process.
Have you ever had the thought that, idk, maybe... they HAVE thought of that, and Seattle’s asking price is just too high?

I don't think there's much wondering about it. That's absolutely what is happening.Honestly, I wonder if the plan here isn't actually to win a SB but rather just stay competitive year in and year out. That keeps the money flowing in at a fairly consistent level.
If they happen to get lucky and make a run, so be it. But I wonder if they just want to make sure they can consistently spit out 8-9 wins and minimize the downside instead of trying to win in a certain window.
They want a 2nd

A great D will always compensate for a weak O. But this is Offensive is not weak. Thomas adds 2 -3 Wins to this team. That's taking into consideration the walking M.A.S.H unit which weren't any where near the talent of Earl when they were healthyWith all out talent on D. Not likely but it may be able to cover up some offensive woes. It use to be offense covers D. Now defense covers O. Keep the scores down and create turnovers.
Big Ben won on his rookie contract, and I believe his second superbowl win was on his final year of his rookie year but was rewarded with a contract extension that took effect that year. IIRCHave you looked at the QBs that have won the last 10 Super Bowls? I think Russell Wilson may have still been on his rookie contract, but otherwise it was Foles, Brady, Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, Flacco, Brees, Rodgers, Roethlesberger .... all either slightly beyond their rookie contract, or many years past it.

There's really no value in going back to 1998, because the game was so different. No, looking back at the past 20 Super Bowl winners, it is a very small percentage that won with QBs on rookie contracts.
Have to cut off some question marks though. So you are fine just going Forward and hope for next season without trying anything?
Maybe maybe not. But you cant claim that Earl would not bring a Super Bowl. So what's your point. One player isn’t going to get us a SB.. would he be a upgrade? Yes.

Maybe that Pitt fan in here can correct me.
But yea, outside of that, it's guys on contracts 2-3-4+
Dallas offered Seattle their third round pick in the 2018 draft for Earl Thomas. Seattle declined it.![]()
Thanks for this. I completely agree. The culture is the biggest issue there. The video of the team walking into the locker room after Sunday's game was so telling. I know it is preseason but they just got embarrassed at home by the Cardinals. Those guys are yucking it up in the hall. Amazing. Everyone from the "GM" to the coach to the players are too comfortable. They don't have that edge that is needed to be special in the NFL. I have been blown away by how bad they have looked in the preseason. Defense has been pretty good but offensively they have looked terrible. Very similar to the look last season. Linehan has them 3 wide and runs it to the weak side for a yard way too often. The guy is a terrible OC. The decision to not put any edge on and challenge these guys is going to look really bad if they get stomped in Carolina. Sadly, the torch will be passed from Jerry to Stephen so I don't see an end to this carnival.
