The insanity of this FO

Conventional wisdom in the NFL says the absolute best time to compete and win titles is with a good QB on a rookie contract. We have that. This year and next. This is the time to strike. Yet Jerry and son are content to with the status quo. Content to roll out scrubs at safety instead of spending the $. The money saved on Dez’s contract pays for Earl. Earl makes this defense a top 5 unit. Who cares that we give up a third. A third rounder is what got us Chaz Green. Spend the damn money.

If you're going to rant, at least get your facts straight over what you're ranting about.

Dallas has already offered "a third rounder", during the draft, Seattle turned them down and wouldn't take the call.

If you're going to ***** about something, know what you're *****ing about.

Maybe maybe not. But you cant claim that Earl would not bring a Super Bowl. So what's your point.

If I had to pick one player that did bring a Super Bowl I would say Mr. Charles Haley. That's a fact. You bring in an amazing talent whenever the opportunity arises. And it just so happens to be at a position of need a position of extreame weakness. We can in one move go from the bottom to the top of the league rankings. Added to what looks to be an elite pass rush and elite Lb Corp combined with 2 young studs at the CB.

This is madness. He should be on the team already.

So, just pay whatever Seattle's asking price is, and pay whatever ET's asking price is? No limit to get it done?

This could very well be the last cheap year of Dak. If he has a good year I don’t see him playing out his rookie contract as an established good NFL starter.

If he has a good year I think he'll demand a good contract extension. But I don't think he gets to bypass the 4th year of his rookie contract. I still think he has to play that out.

No, looking back at the past 20 Super Bowl winners, it is a very small percentage that won with QBs on rookie contracts.

I would imagine it wouldn't be that common. But it is a time period where you should have extra cap space. That will be the case for Dallas this year and next. We pretty much have a QB free of charge.

Honestly, I wonder if the plan here isn't actually to win a SB but rather just stay competitive year in and year out. That keeps the money flowing in at a fairly consistent level.

If they happen to get lucky and make a run, so be it. But I wonder if they just want to make sure they can consistently spit out 8-9 wins and minimize the downside instead of trying to win in a certain window.
There are multiple possibilities behind the current front office's strategic mindset so I cannot say that your assumption is wrong. My opinion remains, from their perspective, the Jones led front office truly believes they have been and are putting the best product on the field to win Super Bowls.

I think the only thing that has changed throughout Jones tenure is that he gradually allowed more inner circle input into his strategic planning. Whether others within or outside his inner circle agree, it would not surprise me whatsoever that Jones believes without a shadow of doubt his approach to winning football is sound. Call Jones or anyone within the organization supporting his stance (if true) delusional, especially based on seasonal results, but it is highly possible the plan is seen by the powers that be as much more than staying competitive annually.

This shouldn't happen and wouldn't happen if we had the right FO & coach. If the players are so comfortable in such an embarrassment of a game, even if it's preseason, there is something radically wrong.

It was a scrimmage game in which most of the key starters on offense didn't even play. Are Dak and Elliott supposed to be embarrassed that the second and third and fourth teamers didn't play well?

This is to everyone in this thread who says Seattle’s price is too high. What is the likelihood of that 2nd round pick becoming arguably the best in the league at their position? If Thomas is signed, all questions are removed from the back end for at least three years.

Now, that said, it makes too much sense and that is exactly why we won’t do it.

One player isn’t going to get us a SB.. would he be a upgrade? Yes.

I said that about 20 times... a safety is definitely not taking us to a SB... DBs don't have to be elite All american pro bowlers if the front is doing their job.

What is the possibility that that 2nd round pick is going to make it more difficult to sign other players because his salary is so high, or that age will catch up to him before his contract is up?

So you are saying this team will never win another SB. Because there will always be someone named Jones involved with this team.
Sometime in the future, this sport will not exist anymore. Heck in 30 years it may not exist unless people like flag football with men and even women by that time.

And Goodell's grandson will still be looking at ways to Suspend Zeke's kids.

First, no I do not think the team will always be owned by the Jones family and even if it is I still stand by what I said. It will be a future Jones not currently working for the team that wins the next super bowl. It is simply my opinion that anyone who can look at the current team and decide next years 2nd round pick is more valuable than Earl Thomas doesn’t have the decision making skills to win a super bowl.

Thanks for this. I completely agree. The culture is the biggest issue there. The video of the team walking into the locker room after Sunday's game was so telling. I know it is preseason but they just got embarrassed at home by the Cardinals. Those guys are yucking it up in the hall. Amazing. Everyone from the "GM" to the coach to the players are too comfortable. They don't have that edge that is needed to be special in the NFL. I have been blown away by how bad they have looked in the preseason. Defense has been pretty good but offensively they have looked terrible. Very similar to the look last season. Linehan has them 3 wide and runs it to the weak side for a yard way too often. The guy is a terrible OC. The decision to not put any edge on and challenge these guys is going to look really bad if they get stomped in Carolina. Sadly, the torch will be passed from Jerry to Stephen so I don't see an end to this carnival.

I agree... they are way to comfortable with mediocre

One player isn’t going to get us a SB.. would he be a upgrade? Yes.

One player isn't. But he's not just one player, he's an added piece to what looks like an already good D. This would be a good time to load up and stack the D as much as we can while we're not paying Dak or Zeke real contracts.

Garrett won't get us to the SB.

This worries me too. It's yet another problem. But I do see his time running out here.

And again this is on Seattle and ET wanting too much. It is not on Jerry or the team.
what is so hard to understand about that. Giving up a high pick and a HUGE contract does not make a SB win.

But it's not that "simple", is it?

There's also the matter of what Thomas is actually looking for in terms of a contract. Unless we know what that amount is, it's impossible to truly say one way or another if this is a great idea or a bad one.

And that might be exactly why Seattle has no interest in extending him.

Earl Thomas alone doesn't guarantee us a Super Bowl......................I still have questions about this receiver group and the tight end position...........

Such a loser's mentality. You are willing to stand pat with our roster instead of improving? No kidding one guy doesn't guarantee a Super Bowl but Earl puts us much closer than what we are rolling out right now.

Newsflash, no team who wins a Super Bowl is perfect at every single position.

You’re saying it like Dak has no choice. He certainly does. It would be absolute insanity for Dak and his agent to let him play on a 1 year $700K deal next year. Very little chance it happens unless Dak is flat out bad, and in that case we will likely to be looking for a new franchise QB anyway

An aging Earl to whom you will have to pay a monstrous salary.

I'm thinking it might be the opposite.

The Earl lovers are about as bad as the Rush lovers.

Plus ET wants a big contract. too big of a contract.

Yawn. Who cares. We have the salary cap space now to do it. Look at all the moves the Eagles made. I'm pretty sure their fans are glad their front office didn't think those guys wanted "too big of a contract".

Guess what, you have to pay players good money that are proven and can play. But our fanbase is so fascinated with salary cap space and draft picks that rarely pan out for us. Salary Cap Champions! Meanwhile we keep getting lapped by other teams in our division over the years. Giants have 2 Super Bowls and the Eagles got one. But hey, we like our guys...Giving out anything more than a thrift store contract is too scary...
