The league has to do something about roughing the passer

What's funny is the two "hug sacks" that started the game had me text a friend that the NFL was getting too soft, then the BS Jones penalty just re-enforced it.

After Grady Jarrett's bad call on Brady, the Chris Jones penalty was a real stretch too.

I bring this up here given that as one of the better pass rushes in the NFL, we are going to hit the QB a lot. There likely isn't a solution this year but maybe in the offseason they need to look at replay for roughing the passer calls.

The Chris Jones call was actually worst. A defender ith the ball in his hands got called for roughing 5he QB. Let that one marinate for a while.

That call was almost as bad as the missed obvious PI call the play before. Pretty obvious the refs knew they missed that and gave TB a make up call with roughing.

And as far as roughing the passer goes, they made the same exact call against the Cowboys in Seattle a couple years ago, and no one said anything, other than call those of us who complained crybabies, so anyone upset by this can kick rocks as far as I'm concerned. Cry me a river. Maybe if they had complained when they did it to the Cowboys it would be different now.

Unfortunately I doubt they go back to the drawing board in-season to change this, so this will definitely affect the outcome of more games a it did the TB-ATL game on Sunday. According to the rule, you could argue nearly half of the QB sacks as we know them should be penalties. It's a joke.

This is the worst I've seen. There is no definition for roughing. It can be called anytime you touch a QB.

All it takes is one phone call by Goodell to the head of officiating.......tone it down. In fact, with the beating they are taking, it would not surprise me to see them pull back a bit.

I thought the one on Jones was legitimate according the rules, and Randy Gregory got called for exactly the same thing last year, if I recall correctly. A defender cannot leave his feet so his full body weight lands on the QB.

The one on Jarrett was a joke. I have no idea what rule that violated except it looked like the same type of tackle that hurt Tua. But the one on Tua was much more violent.
The one on Jones was a joke. If you can’t do that then you can’t tackle the QB. It was a horrible call just like the one on Brady.

They need to make roughing the passer penalties reviewable. I’m sure it will be discussed at the league meetings. Roughing the passer penalties are becoming more ridiculous every season.

The league would be trash without QBs. The defenders need to learn how to tackle someone without trying to kill them. They make 20 million per year because the product is good. I would think that they would be smart enough to be interested in keeping it that way.

Yep - immediately - College does it with targeting!

You're running full speed at 100% aggression to get around or thru another 300 lb OL, then in a matter of .5 second you want them to delicately lay the QB down with a fluffy pillow? Please.

Ooooh, nice idea. Even worse, just stand up at the snap and let the other team score.

You are onto something here!!!!
Naaa. The call on Brady was bad. But it’s not like it’s in every game or QB.

1 or 2 bad calls a week is tolerable . Especially when we consider how many other bad calls are taking place . These on the QB are just more transparent.

The league is going to protect their greatest investment football fans . They just upped the anti in concussion protocol because of head injury. I imagine we are going to see more sensitive calls .

The most ridiculous rule is not allowing a player to land on the QB using their full body weight. When a defender is sacking a QB it’s impossible not to fall on top of them. They’re asking a player to defy gravity. Lol

True but the ref is standing behind the QB, I get that are leaning on the side of caution but this was a bad call.
Bad calls are going to happen. We shouldn’t be changing the rules over a bad call or two.

The league just increased the protocol in concussions because of a star QB. I imagine everyone is a little more cautious than normal.

Exactly........this issue can't wait until the offseason. It's that bad.......

Report: NFL to mull roughing the passer penalties amid outrage

9:41 AM ET

  • The NFL plans to discuss roughing the passer penalties amid outrage over two disputed calls in Week 5, a person with direct knowledge of the matter told The Associated Press.

The person, speaking on condition of anonymity because the conversations are internal, said changes to the rule are not expected during the season. The person also said the league has not given officials a directive to emphasize roughing calls following Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa's concussion.

NFL owners will meet in New York next week. The league's Competition Committee -- composed of six team owners/executives and four head coaches -- makes most of the recommendations for rule changes. Teams can also propose rule changes to be voted on by owners, which require 24 votes to pass.

I agree, does not change the fact it was a bad call. They happen and you deal with it, I'm not overly thrilled about protecting 1 player because of the position he plays, no other players are given the same considerations.
