The Legend of Rico Gathers Grows

he does keep getting work, he hasnt left the league yet, and after leaving Dallas things got better. Cant fault him for that.

Yes the talent is the reason he catches on, his contract is modest and my mistake he is now on his 5th team. I think he is a decent player nothing more, great players do not get bounced around the league like this. Bennett at times is his own worst enemy

For such an inexperienced player, I thought he showed excellent awareness on the catch where he fell down (without being touched) then got up an continued to run. You often see much more experienced players that don't have the presence of mind to do that.

Rico had a good outing last night. If he continues to improve and has more efforts like it he is going to be hard to keep off the 53. His size makes him a weapon in the red zone and it appears he has very good hands.

He has a long ways to go. But he had twice the way to go last year and in just 1 year he cut that in half.

He moves entirely better out there than he did last year. He looks faster and more coordinated running. Probably in part due to not thinking as much. What was really impressive about the TD catch is that he boxed out the defender and snatched the ball with ease as well as running at a good speed for such a big guy. Broaddus has stated that he's had issues in training camp running those routes because he gets bumped too easily off his route. On that play he wasn't even attempted to be bumped off his route, so it was an easy play for him. But the potential of a guy that big to run that well and to easily snatch the ball away from a defender was there.

The catch where he fell down and then got up was just very impressive for a player his size to do that so seamlessly and the end result was a tough tackle for defenders. The other catch on the bootleg was nice because he's faster than Swaim or Witten and tougher to tackle than Hanna (and he may be faster than Hanna given Hanna is coming off an injury). That bootleg is a staple of this offense with Dak's ability to bootleg in both directions so well. If we have a guy like Rico who block reasonably well on the weakside and be a Gronkowski type threat with the ball on the boot, it makes life real difficult for defenses. Now the offense can try to set the edge towards Tyron's side and the defense better have 1 defender from the weakside to contain Dak and 1 defender responsible for Rico. And that can create a lot of 10 vs. 9 on running plays in the Cowboys' favor.

Rico made a couple of great catches and its easy to see that he is a very athletic pass catching TE.

But he is a weak blocker and has shown himself to be hot-headed (tossing his helmet twice in camp and getting into a "bad" fight) as well as cocky and entitled for a player who hasn't done anything yet.

I am intrigued by his potential-- but unimpressed with his persona. Will need to see more growth-- hopefully he absorbs as much as he can from Witten on how to go about his business-- but at this point, Rico looks like he has more in common with Martellus Bennett than Witten.
I feel like you are trying to say him turning into Martellus Bennett is a bad thing. Maybe I'm wrong. I could care less about his persona, if he turned into Martellus Bennett that would be great.

Talent I would gladly take. Drama and headaches he causes teams is why he stays with no one long. It may not matter to you it seems to matter to teams.

Agree but I think you see more upside in the passing game with Gathers then Bennett.

I doubt Gathers ever touches Bennetts ability to block but he just looks so much for fluid and faster than Bennett.

All I ask is he continues to develop, and becomes at least a Tyler Eifert type. Probably might be better.

Him and Butler are just what the offense needs after not making any big splashes in free agency to go after another Receiving threat like our rivals have
The RICO ACT has been UNLEASHED !!!!

For anyone with a sense of reality, Rico was a project from the get-go. He's already come a long way for one so green and undoubtedly still has much to do before he's ready to assume a starting role. Nevertheless, his work ethic is solid. The FO and staff haven't given up on him nearly as much as some here apparently might choose to. Time and effort can cure a multitude of problems when patience meets opportunity.
He is doing great for the amount of time he has been playing football !

the world is changing. you cannot count on too many like dak.
more of our players will have colorful personality like zeke and rico.
just hope they dont get suspended.

what am i missing here, what does Rico have that we cant lose in our TE corp? why are some fans insisting he wont make it to the PS?

Immense talent.

He moves like Jimmy Graham in Gronks body.

So they need to figure it out and IMO they need to do whatever it takes to speed the process up.

By the end of the year I want to see this guy destroying defenses for us.

The thing about Butler and Gathers is anytime they are on the field this year (in real games) they are most likely going to be the 5th or 6th option behind Zeke, Dez, Witten, a mobile Dak, and any of the following players: Beasley, Switzer, T. Williams. That means they are the LAST GUY the defense is worried about defending. It's the same concept as the fullback being open in the flats; no one fears him and if they do, they are too busy focusing on the known threats. So, they either are a part of a defense's vulnerable area in coverage OR the defense is utilizing one of their worst defenders to cover him.

Butler or Gathers versus the other team's weakest defender is a great match-up for us every time.

Neither of those guys will get a lot of opportunity this year. Rico is still a year away except for using him in spots and Terrence and Cole are still gonna get more PT than Butler. It'll take like an injury to Dez for him to really be able to put up silly numbers.

We need to see more but he looks to be a huge threat with the ball in his hands so it would be stupid of us to not try and take advantage of that.

He needs work but from the very little we have seen he can do some damage with the ball.

This guy has the physical ability and the skills to be great, but can he grasp the mental part? Has to be able to block with technique and properly. Seems to have a big head and is a little cocky.
