Since the Kidd trade. Despite that they are still 26-13 against the Western Conference, which was the best record in the West until they lost to the Lakers the other night.

I'm not making excuses. I'm simply trying to inject some realism into this discussion, rather than the 'Mavs suck, Mavs suck!' call. They were playing very well in February and March last year. How did that work out?

People wanted them to fly under the radar this season, which is what they're doing, yet fans can't be happy either way. If they had won a bunch of games, you'd complain 'well, let's see what they do in the playoffs!' If they are stuck in the pack in a very competitive WC playoff race, well then, I guess they suck.

All I care about is how they're playing one month from now. Obviously if they're still struggling to beat upper echelon teams in the Western Conference in April I will be worried, but they still have a month to turn things around. Sorry, but I'm not throwing in the towel when we still have a month to go in the regular season.

And if they proceed to fall out of the playoff picture, they won't be playing a month from now.

When I wrote that, it would have placed a month from now as the middle of April and the end of the regular season.

But yeah, that goes without saying.

This season is turning into a huge failure the kid trade is looking more and more stupid with every game and with dirk out there's a good chance they don't even make the playoffs.

The only positive in this is that at least this year's draft pick is lottery-protected (if it comes to that).

I'm not sure that Devin Harris and Diop would make this a better team now, but losing those two for Kidd did mortgage the team's future.

They're now saying Dirk is out "indefinitely" with a high ankle sprain and a mild knee sprain.

I'd guess he's on the shelf until the playoffs, assuming the Mavs can make it without him in the lineup.

Sounds like it.

Though it might be stated that way so that if the Mavs suck it up the next two weeks, they can sit Dirk for the remainder of the season without an added excuse.

well, congrats nuggets fans.

i should be really sad that we won't make the playoffs, but it's not like we were going to make it very far anyway. but who knows, maybe the players can regroup like the rockets and feed off emotion.

and if we do get in the lottery, i have no confidence that the front office will make the right pick.

I don't quite understand what's happening in this game.

70 points in the first half and then it looks like a completely different team came out after half time.

I don't understand this trend of laying big eggs in the third quarter of games, but they're consistent, I'll give them that.

Josh Howard yet again with a great start... then fades in the second half.

The problem tonight was free throw shooting (64%!) and turnovers (over twice as many as the Nuggets).

Denver needed the win more and are fighting for that seed. Yesterday the Suns had no excuse and lost to a team that did not have a lot to play for except pride for losing to the Suns all season.

Now at 0-9 against winning teams post-Kidd trade, I would like think the Mavs are fighting for something.

Sigh...

Nice sig, btw.

The prognosis on Dirk's knee/ankle seems to be better than what was initially thought (i.e. there is a pretty good chance he will be able to return for the last five or six games of the regular season).

They will need him.

There is little evidence to suggest that the Mavs will go on a run to make the playoffs, or if they make the playoffs they will make any noise. But considering at worst they will finish no more than five or six games back of the number one seed... as long as they can just make the playoffs, you never know what can happen.

That was my point. If it was one game like football, I don't see the Mavs doing it but if its a series, anything can happen. This goes for obviously any of the 8 teams. All the regular season does is provide better odds in the post season. I really think the Suns can do it this year but I still haven't seen that caliber of play to have a strong chance to topple the Spurs, Lakers or Hornets.

I can't wait til post season! This is ridiculous!

The Mavs do not suck ..... they just made a bad trade and their best player got hurt.

Their owner sucks ...... no doubt about that.

It's time to start looking at who to draft at the 14th spot.

I think the #1 priority is an athletic SG who can drive to the basket but who also has a decent mid-range game. Oh, and he also needs to learn how to pass.

We failed earlier with Maurice Ager. I think it's time to try again. I don't know much about college basketball. Any ideas?
