If I had to guess right now, I think Waletzko is going to turn out to be a starting-quality tackle in the vein of Doug Free. Really solid movement skills with some trouble with power. It looks like they missed on Ball (but the jury's still out at least a bit), and may have hit on Waletzko. Edoga also looks like a better guard than tackle, and who knows about this year's draft pick?

I think all of us would have liked for them to have picked the next Larry Allen, but that doesn't mean what they have isn't good enough. We just have to wait to find out. Of course, even if we drafted Torrence, we'd still have to wait to find out.
At 6'8" he almost needs to be 325+ lbs or just not have enough mass for his size. He was getting bull rushed in Div2 at 310. Doesn't seem unreasonable with the peanut butter. Flozell was powerful at that height but went 340.

36" arms though. August cannot get here soon enough.

Richards played left tackle. I think he will push for a spot also. Kick him inside and gives you tackle flex. He was a combine invite, so apparently some folks thought he had some skill or he wouldn't have been invited.

If they really wanted a legitimate guard they would have drafted Torrence in the 2nd.
True.......but at some point we have to accept Torrence was not on their radar. Remember Stephen saying couple of weeks ago some players were graded 2nd, 3rd and 4th rounders on their board that may have different grades on other teams' boards and vice versa?

In the end McClay says something like "you are adding to the depth" I assume he means only going to add depth with Bergeron. Is this only Bergeron, or were they thinking starting quality G was wiped off their boards? It seems to be the focus was DT starts immediately but a G would be on the bench because, uh someone I guess Tyler with Tyron at T start?

This to me DEFINITIVELY proves that Will McClay is the reason for our draft success. I love the logic at the end. He’s basically saying there’s always gonna be a good guard, but Mazi is rare
No that doesn't prove every year.

What about the Cowboys Zone board. The Joneses and McClay need to start taking our opinions into account.

Imagine the furor on this board if we had taken Bergeron.

If the choice was truly between him, a guy you're projecting to a position and who wouldn't be one of the 'five best OL' in the team, and Mazi, who steps in day 1 as a starter at a position he's always played and which happens to be one of our weakest spots, then it's a pretty easy decision

The good thing about this.......we now know LG IS a priority and they are not happy with the status quo. I'm guessing we will see a mid-level signing or trade for a tackle or guard.
We also know that they didn't draft a LG after this debate and that McLay considers G a position of depth which was his argument against Bergeron.

My favorite part was McClay acknowledged the position scarcity and how we were finally in a spot to take the DT, who contributes day one.

Mostt of the board would have been fine. The debates in here have been TE vs RB vs OL. Nobody was talking about Mazi Smith on this board pre-draft and his selection was a shocker given the Cowboys historical reluctance to draft the position this high.

I think it is clear that the starting OL will be:
LT Tyron
LG Tyler
C Biadaz
RG Martin
RT Steele

Drafting a G in the first or 2nd would have been for depth in case of injury to the top 5. Glad McLay stepped up and said what he said and I'm glad the rest of the room listens to him.

My personal preference was trade down with KC and take Avila or Bergeron

Then take Benton at 58

I had been saying for a while before the draft that we should sign Robinson to a 2 year deal, way before the Giants signed him

This would have shored up or DL with 1T and 3T and our OL and would have given us an extra rd 3 pick ( in the trade down) with which we could have still taken Schoon or a better RB
