The Mazi vs Bergeron closing debate in the war room

Now I would not have picked a DT in the first just because they have not picked on in e the first for 32 years, but with only 1 DT coming off the board in the first round, the Cowboys took the guy rated highly who can play today. McClay made the right argument.

But what if the Cowboys had signed Dalvin Tomlinson in free agency and Jonathan Hankins? Then they could have taken Bergeron, if they thought he was the best option at LG, and solved that problem too. With Martin getting older, they will need to address the RG position before long so having solved LG now would make that less of a problem down the road.

By not using free agency to solve gaps they box themselves in on draft day.
Tomlinson cost over 14 mil a year and has little upside. He’s been in the league long enough that he is what he is. The hope is smith can develop into more than just a run stuffer. If that pans out and he can impact the passing game then you have a much better, younger and cheaper players for the next few years

Exactly. You already got people complaining about the draft room and why they clapping lol. You see all draft rooms clapping when they get a guy they want lol

To be fair I also think the clapping is ridiculous, BUT fully acknowledged every single draft room does it. Lol

If I had to guess right now, I think Waletzko is going to turn out to be a starting-quality tackle in the vein of Doug Free. Really solid movement skills with some trouble with power. It looks like they missed on Ball (but the jury's still out at least a bit), and may have hit on Waletzko. Edoga also looks like a better guard than tackle, and who knows about this year's draft pick?

I think all of us would have liked for them to have picked the next Larry Allen, but that doesn't mean what they have isn't good enough. We just have to wait to find out. Of course, even if we drafted Torrence, we'd still have to wait to find out.
Doug "false Start, Holding" Free ?? Hope not.

My take: Way too many Jones in the war room.

Then we made the right choice. Bergeron scared me. Last year, he had a stretch where he faced Murphy from Clemson, Foskey from ND and Verse from FSU in a 3-4 week stretch and he had his issues at times with all three.

I wouldn't want to use a 3rd/4th to trade up for Benton. Pre-draft I wanted Avila with a trade back though but after seeing their thought process, I think Mazi was a good choice. He's got way more potential than the 2nd/3rd round DTs. He helps Micah the most and also Micah + Quinn wanted him. After seeing the draft play out, I would have preferred Mazi/Torrence/Washington or Mazi/Schoonmaker/(Zavala or Bradford) if Torrence is a poor scheme fit. If Overshown ends up being a baller and/or some OL on the roster ends up being a quality LG/C or they get a great G/C next draft then maybe they ended up making the right choices after all.
Apparently Zavala had some injury flags

The good news about this was that McClay specifically mentions this is the highest rated DT they have had in many years. That was available for them.

That’s good because it means it truly was a BPA pick

It boils down to the same swing tackle anxiety we have had for the past 5 years. That and people are not really thinking things though.

Farniok does not suck. Is he as good as Avila? No, but he has come in and played well when McGovern and Biadasz have gone down. I thought McGovern and him were a wash in terms of production two years ago.

Then you have Waletzko and people can think what they want to think about the club's ability to evaluate OL but indications are they like his progress. But even if he sucks then you slide the current LG out wide and play Farniok.

Then of course it is hand wringing time for 2 injuries but at a certain point you need some context. How many teams are 7 deep in average starting caliber backups? At that point we see Edoga and the rookie.

If Waletzko can play then we are 7 deep.
Everyone but Martin and Tyler Smith sucks, and Tyler Smith sucks a decent part of the time. What offense did you watch late last year? You are completely delusional if this is your real take.

Free was a lot better than some of you believe. Had a few good years as a starter. Had some bad ones, but they seem to make fans forget the good ones.

I appreciate some of the opinions on this board. But McClay’s opinion is always going to be the one that matters most. As it relates to Smith, he’s an unique prospect. Micah was unique. Tyler was unique. I suspect they see something in Mazi that many here don’t see. Can’t wait for the pads to go on.

I hate that we do this kind of stuff. The constant self-promotion is so tiring.
Dallas is one of the 3-4 best drafting teams in football for a decade now. We’re long past fans needing to get over their draft day “Jones grievances”.
