It seems that they do not downgrade the high risk players as much as other teams and never seem to realize it. They always have that guy with a "first round grade" that miraculously falls to them every year.

At least they went with the injury risk this year. I like that option over the off the field issues.

is the 30 year old Sean Lee, whom we drafted in 2010.

Carter
Escobar
Lawrence
Gregory
Smith

Just an absolute indictment on the ineptitude of this front office.

And this doesn't even take into consideration the pick misused to trade up for Claiborne! But it definitely shows both a lack of planning and a much too high risk tolerance for a commodity as valuable as a 2nd round draft pick.

To me, it looks as if, somewhere along the way, this organization made the conscious decision to repeatedly go 'high risk' with this draft selection. Just speculation on my part, but it's almost as if a concession has been made for the owner's 'wildcatter' personality where he can 'roll the dice' with that pick whenever he so chooses.

And, like the character risks, there have been far too many 'misses' and far too few 'hits' and it has seriously damaged this team.

Interesting observation. I wonder if Garrett, Stephen and the scouts just let Jerry make the pick in round 2 (or at least "let" him have greater influence)?

The first round seems to be more a Jason round judging from previous drafts (Elliott, Jones, Martin, Frederick, Smith) and the second round has been more gambles (Smith, Gregory, Lawrence, Escobar).

I'll give your Gregory and maybe Carter, though he played his whole rookie contract out.

But how do you indict the FO for injuries to Escobar and suspension to Lawrence (when he had no past history). They don't have a crystal ball.

they we're aware Smith wouldn't play this year. If he balls next year, is it still an indictment?

the 2nd is the wildcatter round.

I think the 2nd round pick is the pick everyone in the draft room has conceded to Jerry to do with what he wants. I think next year we see him downgraded to the 3 round picks because wow does he wiff on these 2nd rounders.

Lets knock him down to the 6 round. Let him have his fun there where he can't hurt anyone.

I obviously can't say for sure, but given the decisions made, there seems to be a pattern of 'indulgence' for lack of a better word, being made with the second round picks, either packaged or how they're used by themselves.

I'll give them a 'free pass' on Lawrence, he didn't have a past history. But Escobar? He was a bust long before this injury. It certainly doesn't give the team a 'pass' on him.

Is he going to give the Cowboys a 'discount' when he hits free agency?

Sure seems that way, doesn't it?

I thought the premise of this post was that none of the second round picks were available to start the season.

I took it to mean the large number of misses they've had, and how few of them will be contributors to start the season.
