I am not seeing the upside. I only see the downside. We offered a 4th. No one else offered more than a 7th conditional pick. That looks like down to me.

Compare Trance stats in college to Rush. Compare Trance contract to Rush. Compare Trance NFL experience to Rush. All of it is down.
Not true, there was supposedly a 5th round offer, which was what Jerry offered as well.

Was there a trade out there to be made for a DT or LB for a 4th?
Probably not. Not for anyone that any fans would want. And if they did trade for a no name type player. They would be saying the same thing about them as they do about Lance.
Which is why I find many of the.. he can't play ... comments funny. There are no GM's on here.
As we don't know what he can and can't do yet.

Think it’s obvious they wanted him here a year before competition. Not saying they are gonna compete in training camp but if an injury or Dak starts to do what Dak does against top 10 teams then you have a chance to see what a contender of a replacement could do

No, but I bet there will be 1 or 2 in this year 4th round draft.
Maybe, but typically 4th round draft success is pretty low. Depending on the year you typically only see 3-5 players selected that receive 2nd contracts from the team that drafted them. Almost 2/3rds of 4th round picks wont receive 2nd contracts from any team.

Trey Lance is one of the few things to look forward to TC this year. Depending what they do in FA and the draft.
For which right now, I am not excited about either.

I’m going to give it a wait see till after preseason but when the trade came down I was like WTH!
I hope he comes in and lights it up but it was a very stupid trade. Jerry thinking he made some Awesome trade when SF sat back and laughed. I just don’t think he has “it” He might be ok for a backup but that’s all I see that 4th round pick would be nice this year.
Even if he lights up, it will be after Dak has his new contract. So it will not even matter at that point. That is the brilliancy of GM Jeruh. It was an immediate dumb decision that should have been obvious to see

Trance's agent never should have allowed him to go to Dallas. He should have gone to a team that did not have a QB, and he actually had an opportunity to play.

Now he will waste another year in 2024. It will now be 5 years removed from his 1 year of experience in college.

The USFL will be patiently waiting for him.

I find it very odd that there is so much hate for lance.
Really? What is odd is the hate for Dak.

I don't think anyone hates Trance. They hate the trade for a player with little to no experience at any level. From a team that needs all the draft picks and cap space it can get to try to get over the hump.

The Niners recognized their colossal mistake and moved on, but Dallas GM Jeruh new better.

Last August, seemingly out of nowhere, Jerry Jones apparently made a fairly big decision without consulting his HC: He traded a 4th round pick to the 49ers in exchange for the niners former first round QB Trey Lance, who the niners had clearly decided was a mistake. Approximately six months and an entire regular season later, a clear purpose for this trade is still somewhat unclear if not strange.

Trey Lance has yet to take a meaningful snap for the Cowboys and was never on the game day roster this past season. Last off-season, the Cowboys had signed backup QB Cooper Rush to a two year, $5,000,000 contract. Rush has one more year on that deal but it does have a fairly painless out if they choose to release him as an upcoming post June 1 cut.

Also in this mix of head scratchers is the fact that Lance goes into 2024 on the last year of his rookie deal before becoming an unrestricted FA.
So here are some of my questions about the Lance move:
  • What was the primary purpose for obtaining Trey Lance? (A successor to Dak, leverage against Dak in contract negotiations, future trade bait with other teams?)
  • Are the Cowboys following some kind of plan with him…or not?
  • How can the Cowboys know what they have in Lance if they hang on to Cooper Rush as the backup?
Here are some possible scenarios/answers to those questions:
  • A- Lance was obtained to give the Cowboys leverage and a possible replacement for Dak should the team decide to move on from Dak. (I don’t see how Lance could be much trade bait if he never sees the field here)
  • B- The plan is for Dak to be extended one more year, give time to develop Lance, then make him the starter in 2025. ???? If there’s a plan it’s not at all very clear.
  • C- The Cowboys somehow already know what they have (or don’t have in Lance) Or…they are going to find out in TC this year?
Honestly I would be fine moving on from Dak via a trade if this team was willing to do a rebuild similar to what the pack did with Jordan Love last year. The problems there would be 1. Jerry won’t do a “rebuild” and 2. We don’t know if Lance is good enough to hand the keys to the car yet.

So what is the plan for Trey Lance? Is this some grand 3 dimensional chess our GM is playing? Or is it a strange fantasy football move centered on throwing spaghetti on the wall and seeing what sticks? If there is some grand and brilliant plan here, I’m not seeing it.

Thoughts?
I think he was insurance I'm case Dak had a bad season without KM. He was potential if we moved on.

The hate for Dak is that he is not cut out for the big games, That's my issue with him.

I don't see how you can hate on GM Jerry making a high risk/high reward trade. You gotta gamble sometimes to hit on something.

The niners didn't have time to groom him is the problem. They thought he would be plug and play but he is lacking in experience so that on them.
