Explain to me how it possibly could work out?

You think they will cut Dak?

You think they will pick up Trances 5th year option at $25M?

You think they will ride out Dak's last year and let him walk? Then resign and start Trance?

You think we will extend Dak and play Trance?

You think Dak is going to ask for a trade?

Please explain how this is could possible work out in any scenario other than Dak getting hit by a bus.

This was doomed to fail day 1. Dak will be resigned and the Trance mistake will be over with, unless he wants to be a long term back up.
Excellent points my friend!

I too wish somebody would explain to me how Lance is going to see the Field in a game that actually matters.

I know some of yall are having wet dreams over Dak being shown the door, but here comes the cold shower news..............it aint happenning.

Dak is going to get a new extension that will probably make him the highest paid player in the NFL. This is not necessarily what I would do, but I dont own the team and I dont make any decisions. Last time I checked, Jerry still owns the team and Jerry says he is "all in".

You do not, I repeat, you do not change starting QBs in a year you are going "all-in", especially when that QB was 2nd in the league in MVP vote behind Lamar Jackson (who also wets the bed every year in the playoffs too, but still got paid).

So, again, somebody please explain to me how Lance is going to see the field in a meaningful game after Dak gets a new extension for $60 million a season, and keep in mind that Dak has been fairly durable during his career, only 1 major injury in 8 seasons (broken ankle)

Folks are way overthinking this.

Lance is a developmental prospect.

Full stop.

If we drafted a QB in the 4th round of last year’s draft we wouldn’t be having this conversation because everyone would understand the context and expectations of that player.

Yet, we trade a 4th rounder for Lance and people lose their minds evidently.
That is because Lance is in the last year of his contract..............its a 4th round pick for a one year rental..................that is a hell of a lot different than a draft pick you have for 4 years.

After this season, Lance is an UFA...........here are the options.

A. You pick up his 5th year option at $25 mill on the cap.................dont think this is viable unless he is going to be the starter.
B. You sign him to a new contract extension. Considering his rookie deal averaged $8.5 mill a season, I highly doubt he will sign for less than that. Again, too much money for a back-up.
C. You let him walk in free agency.

So, we traded a 4th round pick for a QB on the last year of his contract and we are fixing to give our starting QB $60 mill a season. This is why people are having a hard time thinking this trade was worth it...........I mean, if it was so obvious, why is this thread 22 pages long???

They made the Lance trade in order to replace Dak, in case Dak failed again.

Because Dak is due mega $$$ and he blew up another playoff game. At home.

Dak has a failed career.

Time to cut bait.
It's pretty clear but they are Dak-Blind.
They better be ready to accept a no-extension and he either plays out the remainder of his deal (1-year lame-duck QB) or is a post-June 1st cut.
They are betting on Jerry's ineptness this time they might be wrong.

Only other option realistically is to tear down and rebuild. No way you can do both at the same time.

So, the Cowboys traded a 4th round pick for a scout team QB that makes on average $8.5 million a season on his rookie contract that is 100% guaranteed???

If this is true, this has to be one of the dumbest trades of all time. You blow a 4th rounder for a QB on a multi-million dollar guaranteed contract to do nothing but run your scout team???

That is like blowing 100K for a Lambo to drive back and forth to the grocery store. There is a hell of a lot better and cheaper options for transportation if all need is a ride to go get some milk.
Welcome to the moronic world of Jerry Jones. He's either about to handcuff the Cowboys to a behemoth of a contract for Dak or he's going to hold off on that and make Dak deliver an NFCC victory next season. Either way, Trey is a free agent in 2025. I anticipate Dak and the entire coaching staff will be gone after 2024 because of a lack of achievement.

Several untruths are being stated as facts here. The first is the use of the word "murky". It's all a matter of perspective. Your perspective may be "murky" but that doesn't mean the powers that made that trade have a murky perspective. But you seem to assume their perspective is as "murky" as yours when they may have a clear vision for this young man.

Trey Lance is a part of the Cowboys practice squad. As such, he is assigned to assist in preparing the team for their next opponent. You must think this assignment is meaningless to say a thing like, "Trey Lance has yet to take a meaningful snap for the Cowboys". But your thinking is wrong. The practice squad serves a valuable purpose in the preparedness of this team.

This trade had nothing to do with Dak and as much was stated to the public when the trade was done. So why the questions? Do you not listen? You make so many assumptions that you just end up confusing yourself. The player was not added to this roster to be Dak's backup. He's not a replacement for Cooper Rush either. The plan all along was to add him to the practice squad and have him assist in that function.

It's as simple as that.
You have made some interesting points. I never really thought of how having the best Scout team QB(or at least the highest paid) in the NFL would impact and help prepare our defense for big games.

Now that hat is some next level thinking on GM Jeruh's behalf.

Even if they tag Lance in 2025, it’s still less expensive than Dak and his mega millions contract.

YET not a single team has in weak QB market meaning all teams need qb and depth, hes been on an off our PS many times and was FA last year, NOT ONE suitor. hes the most overrated player on our team IMHO
It's plausible Rush could start whether it's our team or another if the starting quarterback goes down. In that context he could be a staring quarterback but in the short term. I am not a big fan of Rush either. But I will give him credit for one thing. He is decisive and doesn't take long to pass the ball and he is accurate enough throw up to medium distance to open receivers. I am hoping Trey Lance shows something in preseason that could elevate him into No. 1 backup role and replace Prescott if he gets injured.

doesn't take long, because he has no arm strength to fit the ball in tight spaces. he has to play that way, because his ball velocity is so slow. I mean I watch him make throws in relief and its painful to see the ball travel through the air in slow motion, but its live TV!!

More like welcome to the NFL, you either going to have a top ten quarterback and get you 36 wins over three years with three straight playoff appearances you know a quarterback that finished second in MVP voting or you're going to be chasing the draft or free agency looking for that guy.. we've seen it we've seen teams that spent decades looking for a Prescott and then fold and go after Aaron Rodgers, deshaun Watson, and Russell Wilson for an obscene amount of draft picks and still pay them top contracts; at least we're keeping our own that we're not having to reach with a bunch of draft picks to move up to be in the same spot we'd be in if we just kept Prescott...

I'm not saying I agreem to pay him 60mil but in the 50s yes but that is the market that is the NFL...

you're either have that guy ohh you're looking for that guy & as much as people want to hate on Prescott for what's been going on in the playoffs, no that would be a lack of a good team in the trenches we're not physical enough show me a game like Troy and Roger got in the playoffs where the defense ,special teams, coaching, & the run game showed up ,forced their will on the opponent to a point where their opponent just no way to overcome it and then show me that game Prescott loses... when he gets that same benefit that our old championship teams had we have not had that in the playoffs in a loss.. There wasn't a game that you could pick out where the defense and the rest of the team like the offensive line and the run game were solid or above average that brought an identity multidimensional game and then Prescott lost that game that we could say damn if the quarterback would have just played better, we'd have won...

That has yet to happen Prescott if you give him a solid run game in an offensive line it gives him time to throw in a defense that can hold somebody to a reasonable amount of points I don't know save the Ravens who only gave up three points in game one of the playoffs and only 17 first half points to Kansas City but held them scoreless in the second-half...
you show me that and I'm telling you Prescott wins those games, we've already seen it the problem here is we don't have those things come together in the big game, there's always a problem you either have 14 penalties or you can't get a run game ,you're 1 dimensional, or your defense gives up 7 touchdowns, there are big problems here....
.
I know what you're going to say if we had more money, we could build a better team so we should what start over at quarterback, bnut that's starting over at square one... You have to have the quarterback first, then you hope to build a defense & a team around him that they could do good things ,well we already had those quarterbacks what we haven't had is an identity a physical team especially in the trenches...

Lance will be QB1 if/when Dak goes.

Dallas likes Rush though. He's earned much respect.

LOL. That's like saying, "If they tag Jalen Brooks it's still less expensive than CeeDee Lamb"

As the 3rd overall pick, his entire $34 million dollar contract is guaranteed.

Also, you cant renegotiate a rookie contract, only vet contracts can be reworked.

The only thing you can do is give Lance a new extension that would kick in after his rookie contract expires.

The benefits of being a top 5 pick in the NFL draft.
That's probably where they should go. Obviously, they are not going to do his fifth-year option, but could extend him to keep him under contract with a couple of years while they evaluate him.

Trance has not won the back up QB position yet.

Trance wants(more importantly needs) an opportunity to start(play). Unless that has changed he will want to sign with a team that he has a chance to start.

If Dak gets a new contract Trance will not be in Dallas in 2025. Unless he wants to be. Long term back up.

No one is even talking about Trance. Even with hypothetical trades of Dak going to another team. No one is talking about trading for Lance, but there are multiple other QB's being discussed in trade possibilities.

The talking head media have completely moved on from Trance. It is like he no longer exists.

This is the most likely thing that is going to happen. I fully expect 2025 to be a major rebuild for the Cowboys.

Nothing about this team is making me feel good about 2024 season.

Another 12-5 season and another one and done in the playoffs is enough.
