The Next Impact Player We Should Part With?

the guy was a decent force with 1 hand, imagine if he had 2 hands and a decent safety next to him

He would have had about 5 picks this year alone...

I don't think you get over the hump by getting rid of key players. The object should be to keep these key players and release those who are not and add to the team.

Depends on how you define key.

Example: During Jimma's era he would never would have let go Irvin, Smith or Aikman.
Yet he would not linger with Walsh, Norton, Richards and others who ran afoul his standards or salary demands.

On the Cowboys team there should be some untouchables, i agree: Romo, Choice, Felix, Witten, Austin. Ware, Spencer.

All others should try to reach the above level and hope they don't end up in Seattle or Cleveland.

Jerra has loyalty to a fault. He keeps players here way beyond their cost-effective worth.

Clearly, Jerra and the braintrust (not you, Wade) need to figure out how to weed out the almost-goods and the past-primes and move on with this corps of outstanding players.

As God and Jimma knows, all players were NOT created equal.
(I have to rest. I feel weak from the tremendous brainpower and horse sense you just witnessed.)

To all of you short bus riding simpletons

When I read that it just stopped me and made me almost sick.
You feel so free to toss that about.

(camera in tight to face)

But I was once a short bus rider.
Yes, go ahead and make fun of me.
Tell me how much more relevant and important and superior, Herr Verdict, you are.

That kind of thinking got me a one-way ticket to the auto shop classroom. But them constant oil changes for the teacher's cars and constant tune-ups of his lawnmower gave me time to think. Well, besides that, you feel you are better than me?

Because you ride a fancy Saturn and drink starbucks latins and go dancing with Mitzi Gaynor and Fabian?

Men are created equal. Well, not Fred Flintstone of Shami Wow that candidate, but no one should make fun of no other because it will karma back to you.

OK, be nice and be our friend don't be all superior and nothing.
My anger has subsided.

While most of your posts leave me a little confused, I'm pretty sure this one was spot on. I say pretty sure because I can't always tell what in the hell you're talking about. But if this one meant what I think it meant... Bravo.

Prior to THIS past season, I'm quite sure that if someone had suggested the mere possibility that LaDanian Tomlinson was a player on the decline that the San Diego fans would have scoffed at the idea, much like you are now. This year, in his 9th season, Tomlinson, the superman, came back to earth, having a very sub par year.

Witten has had 7 seasons of wear and tear on his body. He may have another good year in him, or maybe more. I'm just saying, just like Emmitt, Troy, and every other Cowboy .... his days as a Cowboy are numbered.

If he remains a Cowboy for the duration of his contract, I hope he continues to play at a very high level. Father time would lay money on the fact that as he gets older and more worn out, his production will taper off. Especially his speed. Age is a much greater factor on a skill position player than it is for an interior lineman that doesn't rely as much on game breaking speed.

I appreciate that, Clark.

What?...that is crazy. So Witten goes from what 96 catches to 76 catches, and his production fell off....those 20 catches went to Austin if you want to think of it that way. It makes the entire team better.

That's like saying, who was it that had the 121 catches [I think], Marvin Harrison. Not sure how many he had the next year. But say if it was 100 catches..then he is in decline...cut him....NO, absolutely...NO!

No TD's because the ball wasn't thrown to him in the end zone. 82 is the MAN! Don't even think of trading him...

Jesus.

My faith in humanity slips further every day. I understand the concept, but the thoughts used to support this idea... don't even support this idea.

Just dumb.

I'm still trying to figure out how getting rid of impact players gets us closer to the SB?

If I'm following this thread correctly, that can only mean one thing... You must be a simpleton....

No I'm from Texas. :laugh2:

I think Dallas is close to achiving their goal I don't see taking backward steps as a way of achiving the goal. If you are a draftnik great but we have one of the top TE in the league and big part of this team and will need him if we are to achive the goal of winning a SB

Based on your theory, we should trade D Ware also. He had 20 sacks last year and only 11 this year. Plus he is injury prone. Consider the neck injury, the foot and the wrist, he like Witten are both on there way down. While we are at it, we should trade Ratliff, 7.5 sacks last year and only 6 this year. Again, he had off season surgery. Being only a 305 lb NT, he can't hold up much longer. While we are it, lets get rid of Newman. He's always hurt. Throw Miles in as well, this is the 1st season that he played 16 games. So if we trade: Witten, Ware, Ratliff, Newman & Austin, we can get like 10 1st round picks dude. This is awsome. Sign me up. I wonder if we through in Romo and Colombo can we get up to 15 1st round picks. I'm sure we can.

:sarcasm:

Verdict thinks that Witten may be in decline. Okay, that's his opinion, but I don't think it's a supportable position.

Witten caught 94 passes this year, a personal best.

He had 1,030 yards, 2nd best total behind the 2007 season when he had 1,145 yards.

He averaged 11 yards per catch. That's almost the lowest average of his career. However, he's never averaged more than 12 yards per catch in any year, so this is just spliting hairs.

2 TDs this past year. Last year he had 4. In 2006 he had 1.

Show me, please, some evidence that Witten is slowing down because I sure don't see it.

And even if you were the type of GM that takes a proactive approach to keeping your team young, you just don't trade away a 7 year veteran TE who is a multiple pro bowler (6 STRAIGHT PRO BOWLS), a guy who is considered one of the best, if not the best, TE in the league, on a hunch that he MIGHT be slowing down.

We do that, and the Cowboys would be the laughing stock of the NFL.

And that's the bottom line here. If it were 1998 the team would HAVE to consider a trade like this for two first rounders.

Fortunately it's 2010 and the Cowboys are legitimate contenders with an all pro TE. You don't subtract an all pro anybody from a legitimate contender no matter how old he is.

To all of you short bus riding simpletons who are bashing me for making this post, I guess thinking is not really your strong suit. I am not saying Witten sucks. He has been a perennial pro bowler. His has very good to "great" trade value.

He may have another good year or two in him. He might have more. However, he might also be on the down side of his career. Witten has always been a "tough guy" playing with a broken jaw, etc. But guys who are tough guys (also like MBIII) have a tendency to get broken down over time. I am thinking that it is "possible" that last year we might have seen Witten tail off a little bit to being a mere mortal.

With players, you have to project where they will be this year, next year and thereafter. The great franchises that stay on top in the salary cap era let aging veterans go rather than outlive their contracts.

If we were to let Witten go for two firsts, he might tear it up for another year, but realistically, he is not a young player. He has some miles on that body. What sort of damage could we do with three (count 'em) 3, first round picks?

I'm not going to mock you. I do wonder how any one would trade one of the top, hardest working, most sensible, greatest locker room, QB security blanketing TE in the game?
Every move GM Jerry made last season with vets were no brainers. But get rid of Witten? He would need to have had another lobotomy.

Of course, if you are the Bears or the Bills you look to pull off a trade to get a couple of 1st rd picks but when you are standing at the door of the SB you don't start rebuilding your team. We need to add to what we have not get rid of one of our QB's favorite targets and productive member of the offense.

Jason Witten is the best TE in the game, and a top 3 all time TE.

Not for 3 first rounders.
