The one reason that gives me optimism

I still think we need to invest in a blue chip DT. The great ones have a trickle down effect on the rest of your defense and can be game wreckers in their own right.

They also provide toughness and attitude for your defense, something we're sorely lacking.

Tough inside, eliminates the sense of alternatives in an opponent. There are only so many sneaky plays in the book. Intense control in the center of a defensive line always stands out. Irving can rotate, but a pair of hosses in the middle implants a stamp upon all opponents. No matter how dandy a quarterback may be.

We lucked into Romo and then promptly wasted the next decade with him, so I wouldn't get too optimistic.

I agree, I don't think we need to worry about a sophomore slump, we just need to worry about building up our defense and securing another top WR and receiving TE of the future. Rico might be the answer, but we need to get him on the field.
D-Line is there, but we need to send four and stop with the 3 man rush

There is a real reason why a 3 man front hasn't stuck around. Reality. As a situational gimmick, is one thing...but I'll stick to my cheese enchiladas.
