The 'Over The Hill' Players

How Bill Bates lasted 15 years in this league is beyond me.

He is never mentioned on this forum, but he should be, he is probably the best nonmentioned Cowboy that should be mentioned.
Yes. Bates was a fine Cowboy and another UDFA. Great special teams guy and a tremendous hitter. He was a favourite of ole Tom's because of his work ethic. Nothing came easy for Bates...he had to earn everything.

I love Jason but he struggles to reach his blocks and every defense knows this, hopefully Rico can take over gradually starting this year. As far as DB's, the draft will be good to us this year.

I just wish the team could find a way to ACTUALLY utilize a second TE in the offense - one who can stretch the field. If Rico could use his athleticism to make teams respect not only his size, but his speed... imagine how much more deadly those Witten option routes would be. I love Witten, but he is becoming more of a one-trick-pony at this point. Granted, he is a master at that trick, but new blood is welcomed there.

LP can keep doing it for at least another 4-5 years if he wants. BUT it would probably not be a bad idea if the club starts looking around - though they tried that a few years ago and came up empty.

Doubt it. At least with Scandrick. Its hard to rely on a rookie CB. If we drafted a guy in the first round they are fighting Carroll for snaps in 2017. Adding a second CB, that player would likely be 5th on the depth chart. CB picks would be much more for the future then the present

I took his comment to mean after this year.

Lee probably has 2-3 years left in him and Scandrick has 1-2 IMO

On a side note, if I was the front office I'd look into Gerald Hodges. He's a 26 yr old linebacker had 83 tackles, 3 sacks and 2 ints last year w San Fran.
Wanted Hodges in the draft a few years ago. Thought he would be a very good LB in our scheme

Can't believe Sean Lee is already 30. Man time really flies when you're always injured

They usually bring a guy in camp every year but LP is mighty good and hard to beat out
That position he can still play a few years

Carroll might have a better season than Scandrick.

I was thinking the same thing until I realized that Lee has only been in the league for six seasons, injured or healthy. Turns out, he was already 24 his rookie year. Don't got the story on why, maybe someone else does, but I think this would mean he shouldn't be regarded as a typical 30 year old in the NFL. Perhaps he is more like a 28 years old in terms of NFL "wear and tear".

I don't think age is as much an issue as it should seem because there are so many other factors that influence longevity and lack of.

These would include injuries, from a series of nagging ones to a single devastating one, The position they played would be as factor, I understand the shortest are RB's and NT's. They could include the quality of your team and the way in which that limited exposure to hard hitting tackles or pancake blocks. Simple genetics can't be ignored, some kids are just built Ram Tough, some are made of glass.

There is no doubt Jason Garrett is Ram Tough.

Did everybody know that Roger Staubach didn't play in the NFL until he was 27? Obviously required knowledge, but check this out. He retired at the age of 37 after a season in which he was the #1 ranked QB in the NFL per rating. So why did he retire?

You have to remember that he retired the same year the NFL decided to add new rules that protected the quarterback such as "in the grasp". Before then, defensive players could practically body slam a quarterback.

Anyway, Staubach retired "early" at the age of 37 because he had a bunch of concussions and knew it was getting too dangerous to play.

Farrah Fawcett in that skimpy outfit is still embedded in my brain.
Oh yeah! True, so true.
