The process that led to the Cowboys hiring Brian Schottenheimer

What is the point rehashing this? Schotty is the hc for the foreseeable future

No serious coach is going to come here. Every cycle will have a similar opportunity where the coach has the freedom to build his own team and staff. We don’t have that here.

Harbaugh, Ben Johnson, etc would have zero interest in this job. Nor should they.
exactly

And I'll own up to it. I thought it was a terrible process/hire at the time. But then he did a few things that I liked, and the staff cultivation looked good (Adams/Riley). And it looked like we had something with Parker also... but like, this team has enough talent that the result should be better than this.

Getting bullied by an 0-4 team without it's starting QB is absolutely rock bottom for this franchise in the Dak era.

And if we're changing Head Coaches, you have to ask the question... should we just blow it all up?
It’s a fair question.

I don’t think you can blow the whole roster up. But they need an entire new coaching staff. Head coach on down.

Obviously the Jones boys aren’t going anywhere.

I don't know how you blow it up when Jerry keeps trading our draft picks.

The only players worth saving are interior OL, CeeDee, and the rookies. CeeDee could be moved, sure. But you want a safety blanket for a new QB. That safety blanket at least can also go out and make big plays.

And I don't hate Jerry trading the draft picks to give the team a chance. The problem is he picked the wrong HC a couple of years ago.

But I think 'blowing it up' means trading the heavy contracts for what you can, accumulating more draft capital and truly commit to building and probably sucking for a few years.

To be fair, we already suck now, so we're halfway there.

We all had issues with MM and his dinosaur offense, but he had the Cowboys in the playoffs consistently. Schott was hired as an consultant where nobody wanted him, not surprising he is struggling. They need to go back to a proven head coach with a strong track record, not 1st time HC who is a fish out of water.

This will make you sick.

A reminder on the process that led to the Cowboys hiring Brian Schottenheimer:

- Dallas sent Mike McCarthy into lame duck 2024
- The season went predictably bad
- They missed the playoffs
- They spent the Wild Card Round doing nothing, going back and forth with him
- This made potentially interviewing top candidates at the time (Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn) impossible, literally
- Monday of the Wild Card Round they finally separated
- The first report of Schotty being connected to the job was because he was the betting favorite out of nowhere
- It was after that it was reported he was having an interview
- They announced him as the new head coach on a Friday night, very un-Cowboys

The whole thing was a mess and so of course here we are.

Jim Harbaugh laughs from NY

Jerry will never tank. The division is so weak he'll keep promoting us as a playoff team even if we only get to 7 or 8 wins. Maybe since we do have very little draft picks the team will finally fall apart. It would be fitting.

Yup and we had fans telling us he was better than Johnson, and Glenn because had more experience.

Bad experience i experience I guess.

Glad hes changing the culture though.

Hope Dak still likes him
Dude it had to be over 90% of Cowboy fans that hated this hire. Many of us came around because we liked his staff and thought maybe he'd be a good ceo type coach. Now everyone looks like crap.

Honestly, my trust in this team took a huge hit last night.

I mean, the season isn't lost, but we are running out of time (games )

Not true, I think they mess up by giving the coaches way too much say in who they want. I never understood how they let Defensive coordinators say who they wanted in the draft and then that coordinator is gone the following year. Especially when the writing is on the wall that the coordinator would be leaving. Sorensen is Schottenheimers friend.

Precisely the mentality that gets you Schottenheimer, Garrett, McCarthy.

If you want an organization fully committed to winning, you have to get your head coach the authority to build his team. We don’t have that.

As to your point about coordinators. This gets back to having head coaches with no underlying philosophy of how their team should be constructed, and getting patchwork personnel because of it. Compare that to an organization that is fully aligned on what good football looks like.

The point in “rehashing” this is simply because it is more evidence of the culture that Jerry has built over the last 30 years. He does not want a competent football coach. He wants someone who he can control, and someone who will not overshadow him. In the last. 30 years how many competent head coaches have we had?

They screwed Mike over in that final year strapping him with no talent on the D and Zimm. They then went with Flus and traded our best player a week before the opener.

People need to start pointing the finger at one dude. Stephen. It’s his ship now.
