This is a GREAT read. It gives a ton of insight into the thinking and what's going on behind closed doors. Big player contracts are explained. It gets into the coaching search (who felt out of place) and Deion Sanders.

I started the conversation three or four years ago, returning each year since, in explaining why the Cowboys don't sign external free agents. They conduct football operations like a Fortune 500 business that is too big to fail financially, but still doing things woefully incorrectly. This philosophy appears to have leaked into the process that led to Brian Schottenheimer being hired as the latest head coach.

All in all though, things seem fairly obvious from the outside looking in. The Jones don't trust their ability to look outside the organization for help. When it comes to players, there's nothing that will convince them the risk is worth the reward. When it comes to head coaches, they will trust former champions, but even they could have conditions attached. It's all a stressful existence for fans who have tied their sports happiness (and sometimes overall joy) to a franchise that has shrunked into it's turtle shell.

I'm convinced that Jerry has hired Brian Schottenheimer to make Dak more comfortable with his presence. Since he's been involved with the current offensive schemes, it would serve Dak's interest well to keep the same system intact. In Jerry's mind it's likely that he sees Dak as the main financial expenditure of the team. As such, the mistake of hiring Schottenheimer is facilitated to make Dak's failed expenditure justifiable. One big mistake was made to justify another -- it's typically flawed thinking that a huge ego demands to save face. That's Jerry for you; think about it. It's all about him.

This model assures Dallas of never seeing a Super Bowl appearance again under these guys. It will be sheer luck to win a divisional playoff game.
Definitely feels that way. Hopeless days in Dallas.

The press conference today should be “fun” with Jerry trying to sell sand to someone who lives in a desert lol

Good article. It confirms what we’ve discussed as this is a business and not a football team. I feel the only hope we have is the “Fortune 500 company too big to fail” actually starts failing and losing money. In the past I’ve said this in spite but now I truly feel the Cowboys hovering around 0-4 wins a season, Ala the Bears and Giants, would be the best thing for the fans. The Cowboys need to lose money for philosophical changes to happen. I’m rooting for 0-3 wins the next 4 years, definitely next year and the year after. If the stadium isn’t selling out and merch sales go down then maybe they will re-think the philosophy. I’m just hoping they take a hit financially in some capacity. Even if they make money but make considerably less money than normal years than that would be a blessing. Our players care more about winning the Salary Bowl than the Super Bowl and our owner cares more about winning the Forbes Bowl than the Super Bowl. I’m hoping with some very bad seasons the endorsements dry up for the players and as stated prior the Cowboys start making less money each year and hopefully lose money. That’s our only hope as fans.

Make no mistake, Jerry is losing fans and the NFL is down in viewership. If the Cowboys suck like they did in the 80’s and 99-2003 there’s a good chance even the Cowboys haters won’t tune in. It’s improbable Jerry and his DNA could lose money but it’s not impossible.

This is 100% true. It give no hope to the fan base about being serious about chasing another championship.

If there was any further proof that Jerry needs to sell the team, this is it.

When you are no longer passionate about your job. And you purposely do the bare minimum it’s time to stop doing that job.
I lived in SW Ohio near Cincy in the 90's. Terrible teams there and my bro-in-law had Bengal season tickets and knew the owner. He told me many times the owner wasn't interested in spending money to make the team better and only bought the team because it was a great investment and he made millions from it. I feel like we have become one of those teams.
