I lived in SW Ohio near Cincy in the 90's. Terrible teams there and my bro-in-law had Bengal season tickets and knew the owner. He told me many times the owner wasn't interested in spending money to make the team better and only bought the team because it was a great investment and he made millions from it. I feel like we have become one of those teams.
I think Jerry had the goal of making money AND winning, but he always wanted to do it his way. I think as his children take over for him that they're really only interested in the great investment part of it. Even if they'd bring in a GM when Jerry is gone, it's looking like they are going to be as cheap as they can be wherever they can be.

This is a GREAT read. It gives a ton of insight into the thinking and what's going on behind closed doors. Big player contracts are explained. It gets into the coaching search (who felt out of place) and Deion Sanders.

I started the conversation three or four years ago, returning each year since, in explaining why the Cowboys don't sign external free agents. They conduct football operations like a Fortune 500 business that is too big to fail financially, but still doing things woefully incorrectly. This philosophy appears to have leaked into the process that led to Brian Schottenheimer being hired as the latest head coach.

All in all though, things seem fairly obvious from the outside looking in. The Jones don't trust their ability to look outside the organization for help. When it comes to players, there's nothing that will convince them the risk is worth the reward. When it comes to head coaches, they will trust former champions, but even they could have conditions attached. It's all a stressful existence for fans who have tied their sports happiness (and sometimes overall joy) to a franchise that has shrunked into it's turtle shell.

I'm convinced that Jerry has hired Brian Schottenheimer to make Dak more comfortable with his presence. Since he's been involved with the current offensive schemes, it would serve Dak's interest well to keep the same system intact. In Jerry's mind it's likely that he sees Dak as the main financial expenditure of the team. As such, the mistake of hiring Schottenheimer is facilitated to make Dak's failed expenditure justifiable. One big mistake was made to justify another -- it's typically flawed thinking that a huge ego demands to save face. That's Jerry for you; think about it. It's all about him.

Spot on, we're building from QB outward. It'll be interesting whether this questionable/mythical/delusional option to restructure $100m CAP, in vain attempt to compete in 2025, comes to fruition. Or will Jerry see the Dak/Schott combo as sufficient to raise the offensive side of the ball?

Jerry's gone ALL-IN on Dak/Schott, or has he got them on a show me in 2025 with limited spend? Does Jerry prefer to take the Dead Cap money or saving $140m (hard cash in his pocket).....i'll suppose a lot will depend on No.4 shirt sales.

Simply put.......Jerry is, without question, the best marketing machine, in the NFL. As for football operations, mainly roster formulation, roster transactions, and coaches......he is terrible.

I have long suspected that the dysfunctional atmosphere in Dallas is due to this very reason. Jerry treats it like he is running an oil company, treating coaches like they can be fired or moved at a whim, which no one likes. When you get to this level ALL of your team members and coaches are specialists and you need the very best you can get, and they need to be able to sell the heart and mind of enthusiasm it takes to win championships... which this scheme is the very antithesis of. after a while the players get this lackadaisical attitude and they become only in it for the money.

In short , Jerry's oil company has no heart. A professional football team HAS to have one.

"Big player contracts are seen as rewards for prior performance to the company. Players earn big deals as thank yous for outperforming their previous contracts, kind of like 9-to-5 workers getting promotions."

This is utter nonsense and if they believe this garbage then we can understand why winning in the playoffs is a distant memory in Dallas. Does anyone really believe Dak outperformed his previous contract? Let's start with the fact that he never earned his $40 million deal. Jerry gave him a 50% increase this year, for what? Did we advance any further in the playoffs? Did Dak do anything spectacular to make this team better? A 50% increase in salary is unheard of in the private sector. What did Dak do to deserve that much money?

And if the Joneses believe Dak earned that kind of an increase then they are even more looney than we thought.

Something has changed in Dallas. Jerry wasn't afraid to hire Jimmy Johnson when he bought the team. Now it is almost crazy how he is determined to recycle old Cowboys coaches, and players if you consider Zeke. .
Absolute Truth!

Moore and Shott are the ones who know Daks limitations
They won't ask him to do things he cannot.
Like win against good defenses.

Well the big names have been available , but jerry showed no interest in them, and after bill signed with UNC, the only big name left
was pete carroll, and he didnt want to come here.
See one thing many dont realize is that good coaches that have other teams interested in them are not going to come here.
They know what goes on here, and are not interested.

Fans wanted ben johnson, but he signed quickly with chicago, and probably had no desire to come here, and jones boys had no
thoughts of hiring him.
Fans wanted deion, because he is deion lol but he didnt want to come here either, at least not at this point in time.

Shot to me is a good hire for jerry, lets see how he does.
For the life of me, I cannot comprehend why the sheeples have this idea that they ain't lettin' go of that Schotty was this absolutely awful hire. He's fine.

Like Musk would want the Cowboys while he is working on rocket science and Tesla and manipulating the U. S. government.
You didn't know that rich people manipulate the govt? I mean, seriously, how did you not know that? Picking out one rich person in this matter is like picking out one mosquito and claiming that he sucks blood. Really?
