Sounds almost too good to be true.

The numbers reflect that his knee is obviously still an issue. If this is the very best deal he could have possibly gotten, shouldn't that raise some red flags?

Anyone coming off that injury is going to have to sign that type of deal. Melton had to settle for a similar deal and he had a more typical knee injury.

Seems reasonable. I don't expect much out of him on the field at this point. But he'll be better than the guy he's replacing on the roster (unfortunately).

Or maybe just nod our collective heads and say "good".

You can go to an extreme and claim rejoicing though...
You work with the media?

But, if nobody's rejoicing, how's he going to be critical of the thread topic?

Glad this got done before the draft. We obviously can't count on much from Spencer, but at least we have his rights if we want them down the road. I actually thought the incentives were fairly significant here.

According to a source, Spencer’s one-year deal contains no signing bonus but can be worth up to $3.5 million.

He has a base salary of $1.25 million and up to $750,000 in roster bonus money based on him being on the active roster in each game. Spencer has additional incentives totaling 1.5 million in sacks and playing time.

I don't know why anyone would have thought this would have been otherwise. A guy coming off microfracture is getting a chance to make 3.5 mill. If he doesn't recover, we just cut him before the season and lose nuffin'

I am curious about the 750k bonus. Will he get it if hes placed on the PUP? Or is it a per-game thing?

Obviously the knee is still a major issue. Not many players have micro fracture surgery and come back 100% to what they were. Its probably one of the most severe injuries an athlete can get.

The optimistic side of me says this is a good signing. The pessimistic side of me says the injury and surgery is too serious and there is a reason no one else signed him and that he did not pass any other physicals. In a nutshell, we need to move on as if we never signed him but hope we can get SOMETHING productive out of him while we re-work this defense.

* the optimist in me says that this is a relatively cheap deal and we can't lose with this, cut him prior to the season if it looks like he can't go
* the pessimist in me thinks that it was curious that the only teams he visited were NFCE teams; was he trying to get a rise out of the FO? Was spencer (hopefully) in the plans all along and the FO waited a little (good move) and then got antsy and signed him now?
* the realist in me says that he has always been a cowboy, took a quick look to see if anyone else wanted him, came back to the fold; hopefully will play like his hair is on fire - he should feel like he owes the team something after accepting $20m to sit on his butt for two years (the salary isn't his fault)

If he can get on the field by week 8-10 I'll be impressed.

no guaranteed money is the main thing. If this guy does little we are out some money but not a lot; and he can be cut anytime with no penalty.

Now since he was really only a top player for one out of six years the odds after this injury of him coming back to 2012 form are long. But it is worth the throw of the dice.
