Sounds almost too good to be true.

The numbers reflect that his knee is obviously still an issue. If this is the very best deal he could have possibly gotten, shouldn't that raise some red flags?

You don't need a contract to raise red flags about a player coming off micro fracture surgery. The red flag was raised last year and that why he had to sign a no risk to the team contract. There is no downside to this whatsoever. If he can't play, he is cut. If he can, he provides depth at a position of need and has incentive to put up stats.

I hate the guy, period! I would have had security take his butt out of Valley Ranch the first time I saw him!

Hurt me once, shame on you! Hurt me twice, shame on me! me=Dallas Cowboys.

The optimistic side of me says this is a good signing. The pessimistic side of me says the injury and surgery is too serious and there is a reason no one else signed him and that he did not pass any other physicals. In a nutshell, we need to move on as if we never signed him but hope we can get SOMETHING productive out of him while we re-work this defense.

Honestly, I think this is exactly how they are approaching it. Spencer's signing won't, and shouldn't, affect our draft strategy (or any other strategy, for that matter) at all. We've simply retained his rights in the event that he can provide some meaningful snaps. It's a good signing from almost any angle that we could look at it. I'm sure the Cowboys will have a pretty good idea what Spencer may or may not be by week 1. At that point, I'm sure the proper move will be made. Even if Spencer starts the season on the PUP it still gives us an opportunity to get something out of him late in the season when, it seems, we may need him the most. In the meantime, younger guys get some valuable snaps. I like it.

I agree. I don't know if anyone remembers, Hard Knocks with Wade, but he had to fine Spencer, because he didn't show up to rehab one of his injuries. Ever since that, I thought and still do, he is an idiot!

Normally I would agree with this post. However, there is no downside for the Cowboys. Given that big condition I'm fine with what the fine folks at VR did.

I mean he didn't really "hurt us once, hurt us twice." He was on the final year of his contract and had another great season. Then he was franchised and on the final year again and had an All-Pro season. Then he was franchise yet again but this time missed the entire season due to injury. The guy has played at a high level ever since we drafted him. He missed all of last year with a career-threatening injury. He tried to get back on the field for a game and it ruined him. Then he got micro surgery and may never play again. I don't see what this guy did that was so evil to the franchise. Ratliff on the other hand...

I'll put the over/under on Spencer's sacks next year at 2 and I'll take the under.

I'll get back to you by Week 3 of the preseason.

This is a ridiculous statement.

I'm not sure if he took the low ball deal because of the knee or the chance to play with Ben Bass.

Yeah, he tried for both the Giants and Commanders but did not get a deal.

But really, not much downside for Dallas here.

* the optimist in me says that this is a relatively cheap deal and we can't lose with this, cut him prior to the season if it looks like he can't go
* the pessimist in me thinks that it was curious that the only teams he visited were NFCE teams; was he trying to get a rise out of the FO? Was spencer (hopefully) in the plans all along and the FO waited a little (good move) and then got antsy and signed him now?
* the realist in me says that he has always been a cowboy, took a quick look to see if anyone else wanted him, came back to the fold; hopefully will play like his hair is on fire - he should feel like he owes the team something after accepting $20m to sit on his butt for two years (the salary isn't his fault)

Last year was the only year that Spencer missed. He played (very well) the two previous years

Liking the incentive based deals for Melton first and now Spencer. Both deals open up the Draft to more possibilities, which makes the entire process easier to swallow.

This the most crucial part right here. I'm also loving these incentive-based contracts lately.

Me too. The Cowboys (with the genius of Red J:cool:) are heading in a new direction. Whatever will inspire him to put in 100% effort and save some money. I'm all for it.

Yeah there seems to have been some unprecedented descension with the Jay Ratliff debacle that wasn't necessarily brought to anyone attention.

excellent deal.

keep his rights while he rehabs and give him access to the professionals he needs to get better.

unlikely he is ready week 1 but he could be PUP'd and give it a go week 7. At that point he'd have cost us next to nothing in cap or roster space but we'd have his rights.
figure similar to how Ratliff helped the Bears last year. Could be a significant late season pass rush boost.

I think it may have been S Jones who said the Cowboys would be "efficient" this off-season with the players they signed. Spencer's deal fits right in. Virtually no risk for the Cowboys if Spencer's knee doesn't hold up.

Yeah, but why commit a million or so against the salary cap on a player that may or may not even contribute? I resd posters saying that this is a good signing but they doubt he will even contribute to the team. What kind of nonsense is that?

Read what you wrote...then the Cowboys commit a million or so to a player that may never play again? Stupid is as stupid does.
