The Trey Lance Pick Gets Worse

Kyle Shanahan has addressed this. He decided that Purdy was their franchise QB but that it wasn't fair to keep Lance on the roster when he needed to go play. You can disagree with that logic but that's what he said.
If he had beat out Darnold he would have played and got reps. As the 3, he would not get reps. Just like he did not get reps in Dallas as the 3.

“Well we decided our two (quarterbacks) that we were going with,” Shanahan said. “We’ll see how our 53 (man roster) works out to see if we’re gonna keep three (quarterbacks) or not. We told Trey, when we told him that he wasn’t the two, I said we’d like to keep him here as the three, but we also wanna do what’s good for him too and we’ll see how this plays out. We looked into other teams and he told us that he would like another opportunity to go somewhere where he had a chance to be the two. We thought we got some good deals for him. There’s a number of teams involved. To end up getting the fourth was a little better than we’d anticipated, and clears up a lot of money and allows a better situation for him too.”

Can someone explain to me how this is a 4th round pick when the guy didn't play 50% of snaps? I see everyone commenting on 4th round pick wasted, but it states it's a conditional 6th-round pick unless plays 50% and then becomes 4th round. What am I missing?

Where does it state that?

I would be for trading Lance on draft day for a player. Can’t see anyone giving up a draft pick equal to or better than what we gave up for him. Jerry wouldn’t take anything less than a 4th but he would likely swap him for a player at a position of need.

The compensation that idiot gave up for Lance becomes more ridiculous as more deals are made. Fields traded for a conditional 6th round pick that becomes a fourth only if he plays 51% of the snaps.
Maybe you should find another place to whine when you don't do your research, the bears did fields a favor out of respect because they could have got a fourth round pick from other teams with no conditions but they gave him a better team and a better shot by trading them to the Steelers which were a playoff team last year maybe you ought to read more in research before you run your mouth because that's all that people do around here is rip their own team there is circumstances with all the trades that have their own story and in this case if you read they could have got more for him trading him elsewhere but they had a respect they didn't want him to end up on a bad team..

We will see after this season. Dak is not going anywhere unless he requests a trade.
Unless new deal is worked our before game 1.
Trey Lance has been in a reserve role enough. What more is he going to learn watching compared to what he would learn if he were playing in regular season games, not preseason? He will never reach Dak’s level without actually playing. Lance and Prescott are free agents next March if a new deal is not worked with one of them. I doubt either one of them is playing for the Cowboys in 2025.

Trance is a back up QB at best.

I anticipate Lance will see plenty of reps this offseason and a chance to earn the number 2 spot. His $5 million salary hit this year will make that happen. But if he doesn't beat out Cooper Rush, a trade is likely.

It would be too late to trade him at that point once camp is over. Just like our brilliant GM traded for Trance at the end of camp and we learned absolutely nothing about him as a player.

However, we know he is a nice guy.

There is literally no time for Trance to prove himself with the timeline Jerry has determined to extend him.

So Jerry is going to have to flip a coin. He may extend Dak and then find out Trance is the real deal and realize he made a mistake.

He may let Dak walk and find out Trance is a bust.

Jerry will be making up his mind before training camp starts. That is why this trade was dumb from day 1.

If he had beat out Darnold he would have played and got reps. As the 3, he would not get reps. Just like he did not get reps in Dallas as the 3.

"When Trey and I talked, we talked about all the situations going forward, and I told him how much I'd still want him here to be the three and things like that," Shanahan said. "I also told him that what I think is best for Trey. I do think Trey needs an opportunity to play more. The opportunities he's had here, when he has had those two opportunities, he's gotten hurt in both of them and kind of missed that window a little bit, gave an opportunity for someone else to do it, and that person did it and stayed healthy for those seven games and showed us something that we're confident in.

A Trade, A trade??? A trade for a guy who can't beat out Cooper Rush for #2..You're joking, right? Come on man, that makes no sense...

So after missing a window in SF. What window opened up in Dallas??? Or did he just waste another year and is still a 3rd QB.

If he had stayed in SF he would be the # 2 right now with Darnold gone. Now in Dallas he has to compete with Rush to become the number 2.

Sounds like a great move.

Bet the house that Jerry will make Lance #2. It would make Jerry look like a fool if Lance was still #3 a second year...

He has to be default give Trance every opportunity possible to win the job and then some.

If Lance falls short of unseating Rush to be the Cowboys backup QB...the teams that still have a modicum interest in him will just wait until Dallas cuts him from their roster.

He “failed” only in the sense of wins/losses. As far as play, he was much better than TO Dak. Honestly, all the people who called Romo a choker deserve the former as a result. What’s that saying again? “You don’t know what you got till it’s gone.” Romo had 8-2 TD/INT in the playoffs and one of INTs came on the last play of the game in a desperation throw to win it.
I've always thought.. that if Dak could read a defense like Romo eventually did... we really might have something.

Which is why I wanted him to sit behind Romo for a couple of years... but obviously that boat sailed.

Was a great opportunity lost.. (in my humble opinion)
