So you want to move the goal posts from winning SB'a now?

I wonder home many Trance jerseys have been sold?
They could win the Super Bowl any year. They could very well be in the mix again this season.

We spent a 4th rounder. The Niners spent three 1sts. I don’t understand the issue with Lance. Even if he becomes a reliable backup, that’s worth a 4th. Most 1st round QBs don’t even amount to anything.
The Niners punted on Trance when he still had 2+ an option year left on his contract. Cheap rookie deal, to pay Darnold $4.5M for 1 year.

Donald is gone and the Niners need to find a new backup, when they could still have had Trance.

How can you not translate what that means?

Trading for him so late, was basically a wasted year. We could not evaluate him.

Even if GM Jeruh thought or hoped Trance could replace Dak, how is he supposed to know? We had zero time to evaluate him.

Moving on from Dak is perfectly fine if we felt good that Trance was our future. We will not know the answer to that question and the time is running out to make a decision.

So flip a coin:

Pay and extend Dak

OR

Gamble on athlete Trance, with no running game and a rebuilt OLine.

Either way Dak will be 100% fine. He will most likely make more money in free agency or have the option of picking the team that he believes is the most playoff ready.

Newsflash buddy progress is made in practice, then translated to the field. Tony Romo showed progress in practice before he seen the field, see how that works?
Newsflash, Romo didn’t arrive in Dallas after flaming out with another team. He had been working with the Cowboys going on 4 years. He made progress over that time in practice and preseason games. According to everyone who covered the Cowboys, Romo out performed Drew Bledsoe in training camp in 2006. In an interview several years ago Parcells confirmed it and said the only reason he didn’t start Romo opening day was because he wanted to start the season with an experienced QB, but was going to have a short hook with Bledsoe if things didn’t go well.

Trey Lance hasn’t even spent a full training camp with the Cowboys. He hasn’t even competed for the backup job yet. Not sure what’s going through your head, but I wouldn’t be comparing Romo’s situation with Lance. The team isn’t going to move on from Dak and go with Lance who they’ve yet to see take a preseason snap with the team. He’s a developmental project who didn’t have many college starts. If he can’t beat out Cooper Rush this summer, he will end up a wasted 4th round pick.

Tony Romo is in the College Football Hall of Fame. He is not a 1 year hit wonder.

Is Trance a better athlete, most likely, but he is not QB, at least not yet anyways.

Dak can be cut and we save 25M this year. He doesn't hold all the cards with Trey Lance (a top 5 pick) on the bench and a deep QB class.
a) 'Dak can be cut ...' --- Cowboys are not cutting Prescott this year.

b) '...with Trey Lance (a top 5 pick) on the bench...'
---- Lance was "a top 5 pick" in 2021 - three years ago. Last summer he was demoted to 4th string in SF, then after being traded to Dallas, spent the 2023 season as the emergency QB... and didn’t get into a single game.
This summer, Lance will be competing for the backup QB spot against Rush.

c) '....and a deep QB class.' ---- what does that mean to Dallas?
The Cowboys aren't using another pick in this draft to choose another QB. They traded away the 2024 4th round spot to acquire Lance.
More likely the team signs a UDFA QB once day 3 is done.

So please tell me what progress he made in practice buddy?

The news flash from Jerry's mouth is that Trance will be competing with Rush for the back up job.

Not competing with Dak for the starting job.

Nobody said he was replacing Dak as the starter this year. What I said was his progress could be encouraging enough to factor into not extending Dak.
So many posters believe 100 percent in their own theories, they totally discount any other "possible " scenario. It's almost laughable.

There is literally no time for Trance to prove himself with the timeline Jerry has determined to extend him.

So Jerry is going to have to flip a coin. He may extend Dak and then find out Trance is the real deal and realize he made a mistake.

He may let Dak walk and find out Trance is a bust.

Jerry will be making up his mind before training camp starts. That is why this trade was dumb from day 1.

If they were going to cut him they already would have. Instead, the Cowboys paid Dak $5 million today. Apparently he’s a keeper.

The truth of the matter is that Jerry & Stephen got themselves in a bind by being obliged to pay Dak as much as he's on tap to get. They're simply desperate, apparently, to test Lance as a backup, or have an option to let Dak go if Lance proves he has the wherewithal to develop into a winner. Let's face it -- they're about to pay far more for Dak than they're willing to pay for him, without learning if they have a way to avoid the problem.

Jerry clearly stated Trance will be competing with Rush for the back up QB. I think Trance is afraid of Rush.

Trance is no threat to Dak.
So do you think we should cut Rush too? I agree we should cut rush too. I don't want dak to have any competition. Why can we find some hurt qb who isn't any good to back up dak? With all the trouble hanging over his head, I would hate for him to have to worry about his job too.
So I agree with you, cut Rush and Trey. Dak is good enough to play without a backup. I'm with you too on extending him. I hope they extend him for at least ten more years.

It has nothing to do with being scared. We will have to resign Trance just to figure out what he is.
Whats this "we " stuff? Maybe cowboys staff know a lot more than you or me or us.
Time will tell. Everyone lay your money down for chest thumpin rights.

San Fran got rid of Lance because there was a faction of the fan base who were obsessed with him and it threatened the hegemony of 49er Nation

Because of Purdy, Trey had to go
