Question to ponder: Given about a week's time, would Brian Waters be better guard than Mackenzy Bernadeau?
You bet your big, sweet, overgrown backside he would be.
Word around town - Denton, to be more specific, where Waters lives - is that he looks fit and ready to play football, even after 18 months of R&R. He wants to, but only for the right situation, which Dallas would most certainly represent.
Last time Waters played, he earned a pro bowl bid on a Super Bowl team. I was begging and pleading that year for Jerry to ring the free agent up, but he ignored us all. We watched an awful season of nonsense roll through our guard positions in 2011. Romo played through broken ribs and hand injuries as we limped home to 8-8.
Then, last year bought band-aids in Nate Livings and Bernadeau. We all see - even Jerry and Stephen thankfully - that they are not answers to the problem. Marginal backups at best. Romo again magically dipped and dodged through last year without any protection or a running game, resulting in another 8-8 disappointment.
This has got to end.
Normally, I wouldn't be signing a free agent this long out of football. However, the need is crystal clear, and Waters doesn't come with an injury history. Just one of overachievement and multiple successes, not the least of which was being named NFL Man of the Year.
Perhaps that level of character and health makes Waters the sabbatical exception, and our need for a good right guard makes this a chance worth taking. Jerry already gambled and lost with Livings and Bernadeau (good gosh, look at the money spent on those pedestrian performers).
Stop dilly-dallying around and sign this man. Get him in shape and ready to park right between our rookie center and Doug Free, both of which could use an experienced good player alongside.
Do it. Do it now.
