There is no intelligent reason to make Romo play Sunday

Because we'll enter into a three way tie with another division leader & that screws us!

i see from the other post now. Yes, that does really suck, and totally lucky for seattle.

Yeah tell me about it, it's just happens that Seattle beats both GB & Detroit with tie breakers or else a win would actually help us.

There are 2 scenarios to get a bye:

1. Det/GB end in a tie.
2. BOTH Seattle and Arizona lose. Seattle hosts the Rams and Cardinals play Niners.

The first scenario has about a .000001 chance of happening.
The second scenario is very unlikely just because Seattle is not losing to the Rams.

But here's the kicker. If scenario 2 happens, we get a bye. No matter the result of our game. We can lose and still get a bye if this scenario happens.
Scenario 1 requires us to actually win.

Play Romo and the starters a couple of series to establish something and then sit them. It realistically means nada. Of course they want to play. They are pros and only play 16 of these a year. No pro athlete worth anything will tell you he wants to sit. But this is where the head coach and the staff has to make those decisions for them.

EXACTLY.

If they play the starters, it will be a huge mistake from Garret and team.

I dont like. I dont like it at all....play the backups, let weeden try to win it.

THE GAME MEANS NOTHING. I am all for momentum etc etc, but be smart. The right choice here is clear...

The table is now set for Week 17 of the NFL season, and the league will serve its main course divisional battles later in the day after a slew of mostly relevant 1 p.m. appetizers.

The 16-game lineup for next Sunday looks like this (all times ET):

  • Browns at Ravens, 1 p.m. (CBS)
  • Chargers at Chiefs, 1 p.m. (CBS)
  • Jets at Dolphins, 1 p.m. (CBS)
  • Bears at Vikings, 1 p.m. (FOX)
  • Eagles at Giants, 1 p.m. (FOX)
  • Saints at Buccaneers, 1 p.m. (FOX)
  • Colts at Titans, 1 p.m. (CBS)
  • Cowboys at Commanders, 1 p.m. (FOX)
  • Jaguars at Texans, 1 p.m. (FOX)
  • Bills at Patriots, 1 p.m. (CBS)
  • Panthers at Falcons, 4:25 p.m. (CBS)
  • Lions at Packers, 4:25 p.m. (FOX)
  • Raiders at Broncos, 4:25 p.m. (CBS)
  • Cardinals at 49ers, 4:25 p.m. (FOX)
  • Rams at Seahawks, 4:25 p.m. (FOX)
  • Bengals at Steelers, 8:30 p.m. (NBC)
If this is correct then we will have to play to win IF we care about any chance (it's small) of getting a bye. Not sure the risks are worth the exposure but my guess is they'll play some. Personally, I let the non-starters do the job.

Cowboys don't have to play to win to get a bye.

The best chance for the Cowboys to clinch a first-round bye in the playoffs is if Seattle loses at home to St. Louis (the Seahawks are a 13-point favorite) and Arizona loses on the road at San Francisco. The next-best chance would be for the Cowboys to win and the Detroit-Green Bay game finishes in a tie.

Source: http://cowboysblog.***BANNED-URL***...who-they-likely-play-in-the-first-round.html/

The first scenario, the more likely of the two, happens regardless of whether the Cowboys win on Sunday.

Too much risk for too little payoff IMO - rest the injured players.

Um yeah, he has a bye the following week, we don't. Would someone explain to me how our situation is even remotely the same as the Patriots? Aside from the small fact that they're getting a bye week, we also have a QB who has been dealing with a bad back all season, someone who CLEARLY benefits from having extra days off.

And we're going to play him in a game that has virtually no bearing on whether we get the #2 seed or stay as the #3 seed...just because? Really? Please.

Yes.

And this has been Bill's strategy for years and years.

Read his quote.

Play your guys.

Then you must be under the impression we need to win to earn the bye WE DON'T! If we lose and Sea + Arz still lose we STILL END UP WITH THE BYE!

You are correct. Had to go back & check again. Was under the impression that we needed the win as well.

The dude has been in the league since 2003 and has been starting games since 2006. The idea that a grizzled veteran like him can't take a game off to keep his momentum going is frankly idiotic. Risking your franchise QB with a bad back in a meaningless game is insane. Full stop.

That's a strong opinion. I'm of the mind to keep the team in their routine of preparation. Practice just as you have all season. Game day I treat this game like the first preseason game. Weeden gets the first half and Vaughn gets the second half. Romo gets the clipboard at Garrett's side.

NFL live made a good point just now. Antonio Pierce and Hassleback both spoke on the rythym of the team and not to mess with it.
Pierce talked about their runs and how they palyed everyone the whole game in the seasons they won the super bowl and when they tried to rest people they lost.

Play everyone who's healthy. If Ro and Martin need rest that's fine.

Psst. What does Bill know. He's only been to seven Super Bowls, won two as a defensive coordinator and three as a head coach. But what does he know. He's clueless.:lmao::lmao2:

Well, that settles it for me. If Jones is in favor of playing the starters, its probably a bad idea...

As for my previous comments as they relate to Jerry Jones, as they saying goes, "A broken clock is at least right twice a day."

Depends how it gets broken - pour enough Johnny Walker on to it and those numbers wash right off... ;)

Wrong. This game is meaningless in regards to seeding. Don't need to win to get bye.

Romo should not play. Murray should not play. Martin should not play. Ro should not play. Scandrick should not play. Anybody that has been roughing it out to play, should not play.

That's the whole freaking team! So, just forfeit the game?
smh

No, go into DC and show the NFL that the team is not resting on their success.

Stay sharp, stay focused, and keep that momentum going.

Besides, it a moot point anyway. Garrett says the starter will play. (just hope the players don't give him a Gatoraid bath if they win).

The whole team isnt dealing with a bad back, broken hand, sprained MCl, ankle sprain, and whatever Scandrick is dealing with. If they could forfeit the game I think that would be the best move. Take the bye week like seattle and GB will do next week. Don't think those teams are upset that they don't get to play in the first round of the playoffs. Teams play better when rested. The stats back that up. We'd have to win 8 straight to get to the superbowl with no bye week. No I take the bye this week and rest the guys that need it.

Don't show the NFL anything in DC, show them in the playoffs. Staying sharp and keeping momentum are football clichés that have nothing to do with the players on the field and their ability to perform. Rest does.
