Disagree to some extent. I dont think our run D is a weakness, I just think our pass defense is soo good that its really the ONLY play they can attack us and hope to have some success. If you look at the ypc for opposing backs in some of these games, its not great.

I also dont think that DT is our biggest issue. LVE is our biggest issue in the run game. He sucks. He comes from the Jaylo Smith school of linebacking where you dont run up into the hole. You just tentatively hang around waiting for the play to come to you. LVE needs to do.

Thankfully help is on the way in the form of Clark our rookie from LSU. This guys is going to be a good one. The sooner he gets up to speed, the sooner we can punt LVE in the starting lineup.
Hard to have both, elite pass rush and solid vs the run, but Clarks addition will be like Sam Williams introduction, I will confidently make that claim.

I consider Quinn to still be building this defense, it's a very good defense, but it's still under construction to a degree but there is very good depth, players like Bland are going to be
starting soon with Lewis out, and Josephs' biggest hurdle is to grow up and grab a starting gig.

Despite what anyone thinks, this defense is deeper than we have been in a very long time.

I remember losing a starting corner the next in line was bringing Jeff Heath over to replace.... lol

Hard to find that BIG NT that can dominate, they are rare, not everyone has one.

Rushing the passer or shut down the run, that's a DCs decision when dealing with reality.

This defense is getting it done now, and improvement vs the run is coming soon, so that is what matters most.

You can always tell the 'fans' who
a) Never saw a legendary defense at work
b) never saw any version of Doomsday
c) really have no concept of reality
To be fair, the rules and the league have changed dramatically. Definition of legendary defense is very different than in years past. Offensive players today would probably all end up in the hospital if they played in the 70s, despite being bigger, faster, and stronger. It was just a brutal sport in those days.

I really don’t think it’s a personnel thing, I think it’s schematic. They show replays of runs and our line is just not in the right places with blockers outnumbering Dlineman.

I think Quinn’s scheme is geared towards stopping the pass and living in 3 Safety looks. There’s going to have to be a concerted effort schematically to commit to stopping the run in order for us to see a big improvement.

Doesn’t matter if your 1T is holding a double team if the pulling guard is free to get to your LB.

But they hear the sports media. Everyone on Cowboys.com podcasts have been clamoring Jerry to improve the DT position.
Ya and he hasn’t listen since Jay Ratliff and I think we got lucky with him. Can’t remember wasn’t he a 7th rounder?

I see that some are saying a one tech DT and a linebacker.

Soooo...John Ridgeway and a healthy Damone Clark would have done the trick?
:omg:

DT, LB, and safeties are a weakness (Yes, our safeties will also be exposed at some point)

This is what happens when you think you can outsmart the league and get great safeties and DTs for cheap. Hill is an outlier but also a complete bust.

Safety is a strength!
  • Wilson is a weapon
  • Hooker has fantastic range
  • Kearse is a beast in the box
  • Mukuamu is great in coverage
Couldn’t disagree more with the safety part, we’ve got some very good safeties.

The whole point of NT is that he forces the guard to help the center out so he won’t be doing much of pulling. Pressure straight from middle is QB’s worst nightmare.

Do I think we need a DT yes but I’m not certain LB isn’t a bigger need hope you’re right bout Clark and cox
LVE isn’t bad just seems slow
LVE is in the bottom 10 of starting LB's. He's slow to diagnose and even slower to the ball.

They're JAGs - watch, as the season rolls on, they'll get exposed.

LVE absolutely isn't slow. More so the opposite in straight line speed. But his center of gravity makes him lack quickness in change of direction.

That and he's too tentative; doesn't read plays so great.

You guys keep touting this mythical beast that doesnt' exist.

Kinda agree. That breed of cat is very rare. There might be six or seven big powerful DTs in the league that maul but also get you QB pressures.

Teams are teeing off on our lack of success stopping the run, which creates a viscous cycle where our D gets tired, and our greatest skillset (pass rush) goes unused early in games.

I know people are saying these are off tackle runs but that’s simply not true. Other posters have shown the run maps and most long runs are right up the middle. Eagles game is perfect example.

If we can just get a scary fat man that gobbles double teams I have faith that our linebackers will play better and I have faith that Cox and Clarke show enough promise to shore up our LB position long term.

If we get that guy, offenses become one dimensional, and it becomes a freak show

This defense is a Super Bowl title away from legendary. It's not necessarily fair, nor is it fair when applied to QBs, but fans aren't known for being rational.

Wanna be a legend, win the big one.
