Thompson or Barber III

I'd keep both, but if you have to get rid of 1, Barber has trade value...you could probably recoop the 4th...surely a 5th. Thompson has no trade value because he hasn't really done anything, despite all the hoopla. He was an undrafted rookie...no one is going to offer a 5th round pick for him based on his very limited preseason work...any team in the league could have had him for a 7th round pick, but didn't have any interest...which explains why I'd cut him and put him on the practice squad...I still believe he'd clear waivers...at this point, I haven't heard of any team hurting for RB's due to injuries.

I just wish the kid would do something, anything, in the KO return game...then I'd feel great about giving him a roster spot.

You don't cut a 4th round draft. If you put him on the practice squad he is gone immediatley.

They cut last year's fourth round pick (Sean Ryan) and had no problem getting him on the practice squad. He even stayed there for awhile. But I do believe that Barber would get swept up very quickly. There's just too much demand for a good running back.

If the Cowboys were to keep only three backs I think they would actually cut A-train.

Let's all remember how young Barber is, he came out after his junior year. As for Thompson, this lovefest is getting sick. What did this guy do at San Jose ST?. I understand he's from the D/FW area, but come on!. He's no better then Rashard Lee!. Remember how everybody talked him up last year and he couldn't beat out Shaud Williams in Buffalo. :trophy: :iggles: :suxiggle: :disseags:

For a fourth round pick, Barber has been a disappointment to me. While I never expected him to play like Julius Jones, I did expect more out of him than what he's shown us so far. I think the fact that he was drafted in the 4th is the thing that will save him a spot on the roster, at least for the time being.

It'd be a mistake to cut Barber. He's more talented than Tyson and more experienced.

Did you see how hard he ran, even though he fumbled? He actually puts his head down and looks for the hit.

He should make the team and get good playing time.

Thompson's developmental. But fast. Real fast.

Keep them both

I don't know what preseason games you were watching, but Barber looked good to me.

Didn't help that he was tackled in the backfield usually when he got the handoff.

But I did see him make nice cuts, find holes in traffic, show quick acceleration, and run really hard

You know you have improved at a position when the cut becomes this hard. Both backs have looked good but I have to give the edge to Thompson based on his break away speed he possess as well as he is not putting the ball on the ground as Barber has been doing.

I like the idea of putting Barber on the PUP list and keeping TT to see what he can do.

Barber has the skills to develop into a complete back if he can hang onto the ball and pass Tuna's toughness test.

For now, I'm once again not buying into the hype of TT unless he can do something against the regulars.

To me he has the classic look of a a formerly unknown pre-season star that gets a lot of hype in training camp and the pre-season only to fade into obscurity once the regular season begins.

Thompson is competing aginst the same level of talent Barber has. I like Barber and was really excited about watching him this pre-season but in all fairness Thompson has looked good, he has not put the ball on the ground something Barber has struggle with both in games and training camp Thompson has also show very good break away speed.

Barber has proven at the college level that he can play at a high level, I would rather have him then Tyson at this point.

Agree.

TT has character issues in his past, though not extremely serious. The speed factor is highly overrated once they start playing for real. A back has to bring more to the table than that.

Barber has NFL bloodlines and has competed at the highest level of college ball meaning he's received better coaching, training, etc. He's closer to being ready to compete at the NFL level.

Barber is simply the better prospect at this point in time.

Agree, Barber IMO without any hesitation at all.

Didn't JJ have fumbling problems last year too? Where would we have been if we cut him?

I say we keep Barber. He has shown great ability, and IMO he can catch better than JJ. I am as big a fan of Thompson as anyone else on this board, but the guy needs some serious work. His speed will save him, but like someone else said, the kid has no moves that make you miss, only pure speed, which is why he hasn't shown anything on special teams. He did have a fairly good return against the Texans, but that is because he had a large lane to run through.

I say we keep both. Barber has potential to be a starter. No way should he be cut right now.

thompson doesnt look faster to me than jj.. anyone else agree?

I agree. I think JJ is the most explosive back I've seen in a long time.

TT may be faster than JJ over a longer distance because he seems to have a longer stride and deceptive speed, but he doesn't have near the burst of JJ, which I believe is a more important quality.

Thompson is a good deal faster than JJ. Right now Thompson looks a little one dimensional. That could change. Barber and ATrain appear to be able to backup right now IMO. Thompson has not impressed on returns.

I think Parcells can keep Thompson by going short at TE. He can hide a TE on the PS better than Thompson. That's the only out I see.

You are what you are, and Barber is a fumbler.

I'd cut him if it meant being able to keep a young guy on defense like Berry-o or baby Pepper.
