Those Runs up the Middle

They're not really running a base 4-3 or hybrid/combo set. They run a lot of defensive snaps out of 4-2-5 to get their 3 safeties involved. Once the run clears the front 4 they seem to have an easy 6-9 yrds. With Clark working into the line-up hopefully we'll see a more traditional 4-3 early and we won't get gashed as much. Hankins will help, but right now the front 4 is built to chase the QB. Other teams know this and continually use that speed/aggression against us
But if they chase the QB outside, he can run for 20 yards or more. For some reason other teams QBs run so easily on us. Are we just selling out for sacks, and when he eludes that he's got all day to run then? Fields ran all day today, Jones for the Giants did for the first half - until they put Wilson on him as his spy

Pretty close to what I was thinking. We desperately need a starting quality UT(Under Tackle) to start next to Hankins. I can't overstate how much difference it would make.

What happened to Gallimore? He was the only guy I had any hope of being a starting quality DT this year, and he showed up with nothing.

Fields, Hurts and Jackson are probably the best, and we've faced 2 out of 3. Hurts did his damage by reading Parsons on RPOs. Fields I do believe were more designed to be him as the runner, but the results are the same. They crack that front 4, they have plenty of daylight with the QB himself really only needing to beat one rusher. Everyone else is in man or zone, far from the action. Few more big bodies and/or having another/better LB play could change their fortune

Feel like we struggle mostly against QBs that can run…Fields is about as good as it gets.

It doesn’t help we refuse to let Parsons play MLB in base defense to help the run. Teams run right at him bc he’s undersized and he can’t set an edge.

He should’ve spied Fields most of the game.

Let someone else spy the QB. Parsons is way too good a pass rusher to waste him as a spy.

I watched as closely as I could, and every time I saw Galley and Osa in there on those runs up the middle.

Is it really worth it to give up those middle runs just to play lanky guys at DT?

Gallimore is a lanky guy? Seems fat to me.

They beat us up the flank as well.

Scouting report was a bit wishy washy, but from what I gather I think he lacks the lateral agility to play at a high level. Not positive, but I think that's what it is.

Odighi made a couple of big plays when the other DT was Hankins.

Many runs that are in the middle of the field are actually outside runs because zone run blocking forces the entire line to move laterally.

I noticed Odighi playing DE a couple of times which tells me they wanted to beef up the DE position vs the run.

Ironically I thought he'd make an ideal Marinelli 1T. Strong, quick off the ball, straight ahead speed, lots of hustle. But as you say, no lateral agility and no length, so ill-suited for UT.

But I wasn't thinking so far back. Why is he laying such an egg *this* year. Seems like he had more promise than this. Played better in previous years.

Though looking at the stats, maybe it's always just been promise and never real production. And hype. Tons of hype in camp last year.

Im not trolling or a cheap shot. Make better points and use of language if you dont want people pointing. You're use of the word makes it appear you dont know what the word means. If you dont like that, again make more of an effort to make an effective statement. Dont get offended when people call you out it.

Gallimore's size is not remotely lanky for a DT. 6'5 305 would be "lanky". Gallimore is 6'2 not 6'3 anyways
Calling David Irving or Leon Lett “lanky” would be more appropriate.

theyre working Hankins in so hopefully things pan out

but you have to keep playing the slim guys theyre a great pass rushing unit

That's the problem they're too small and are running up the field like every play is a pass

Until we accept that Parsons is a LB not a DE we will have problems

Yep, the running QBs “scare” me the most and teams that run a lot of motion.

I think our fans have an oversimplified view that you just stick the fattest DT you can inside and that makes things magically better.

Our primary linebackers are physically slow moving and reacting. You couple that with a general inability to get off blocks and that’s a recipe for big runs/gashes.

Tweener. Not lanky, but not stout either. Maybe that's why he's not all that effective?

I don’t think Gallimore’s weight is listed right. He was 304lbs at the combine and reportedly put on 16lbs this off-season alone. He’s definitely not lanky, and I would say he actually is pretty stout. His lack of length definitely limits his effectiveness two gapping and he just doesn’t have the technique to get under offensive linemen like say Geno Atkins. It’s simply not the right scheme for him IMO and I think he made a mistake putting on weight to move to 1T.

In my opinion Jay Ratliff was a lanky nose tackle and also what it seems like we are trying to find someone in the seventh round that can surprise us do the job and make the pro bowl.

When in reality we need to bite the bullet and use a first round pick and draft someone like Haloti Nagta or Dontari Poe.

We are finding neither this season we need to sign Suh for some quick help and hope he feels like playing and address this next year in the draft with a first round pick.

We have been working around this problem now for decades and the fact that Jerry actually traded for Hankins gives me hope that he is actually realized that it is a problem finally
