I think Dallas should get in the running for a Summer Olympics. There are several huge venues for the events now.

The new Stadium would be the perfect centerpiece for the grand ceremonies.

Maybe it's just me but I think that would be so cool.

I think it would be great, but the City of Dallas would be involved. To semi quote Star Wars Phantom Menace. "I vote no-confidence in the City of Dallas."

Ooh, man, that would kill me. Push it to the Cotton Bowl. Even that pains me.

Yeah one of the guys from PTI brought up that Jerry wants everything there... the Olympics included.... Kornholer didnt believe Jerry could make the Olympics happen but the other (fill in) guy not Wilbon thought he had a better chance

not enough hotels....yet.
Between the entire DFW metroplex there could be.

You know I had friends up in Utah and some others in Atlanta that rented out their homes to training athletes for like 10 and 12 times their mortgage amounts paid in advance and they made out like bandits. They'd rent their homes, completely furnished for like 10,000 dollars a month for 3 months.

Trust me, people will find a way.

But if the Olympics were coming I'd bet the Hotel construction would pick up too.

If you do it right the Olympics can really help a city. SLC got a big fix in the interstate system due to the Olympics; Atlanta got a lot done as well. If its well organized and well done. See Montreal 76 for a complete cluster *&*&.

This is absolutely true.

I just can't imagine a better centerpiece stadium than the new one. Talk about the ability to create the most spectacular ceremonies ever...wow.

I don't beleive this for a moment. Dallas/Fort Worth area has a 20% greater population than Atlanta. (Home to the 1996 Olympics) That alone would account for more hotel rooms based on business levels alone! Dallas is also one of the larger convention cities in the US adding to it's hotel room availability.

We tried to get them for the 2012 Olympics, but we were cut when they cut it to 4 cities. Hotels really was not the problem (we have plenty, more than Atlanta), the main problem cited was the poor transportation system we have in Dallas.......all there really is public transportation wise is DART bus/rail service......no subway system, you don't see taxis in force in the Dallas area like you would in many other major cities.........and another thing about DFW for the summer olympics is the opressive heat we have in in the Summer......we had heat indexes up to 115-120, even though the actual temp was around 102.

The new stadium will help in a certain bid and DFW working together would be the key (DFW is practically one huge city now anyway), but until we upgrade our transportation system we won't get it.

The new stadium can easily host a soccer game.

What about track and field? The center piece of any olympics is the track and field stadium. I don't know if the new stadium can be converted for that use. If it can, then yes Dallas could host an olympics. If not, then Dallas would have to build a special venue just for track and field and then they probably would not even utilize Jerryland.

Slightly off topic, but have you seen the track and field stadium they built in Beijing for the 2008 Olympics. Looks impressive and so does the building that will hold the swimming and diving events.

As part of the bid proposal for the 2012 olympics, I believe Dallas included the building of a 20,000 seat track and field stadium if they won the bid to host.

Boxing was going to be at the AAC, we have the very nice Ameriquest Field in Arlington which the new Cowboys Stadium will be right by, Lone Star Park, Texas Motor Speedway, the Cotton Bowl, SMU, TCU etc... all could be used, lack of facilities isn't the problem here, public transportation is the main problem, especially with the events being spread out all over DFW.

Dart rail needs to run all over the metroplex. wouldn't that be nice.

I agree on the oppressive heat but remember you can have them a bit earlier too. Like in May.

Great info on the transportation system shortcomings. Very valid.

I was not aware they were in the running for 2012.

No I haven't, but if you have links I'd love to look at them.

It runs all the way up to Plano, but I don't think goes west very far past Dallas......mostly north-south I think. It doesn't run east of Dallas, I know that.

Yes, but doubt they would, Frisco has Pizza Hut Park which was made for soccer and can seat 20,000.

So unless the World Cup comes I doubt any soccer will be played in that stadium.

You're really dialed into this. This is good stuff. I'm impressed.
