I think Dallas should get in the running for a Summer Olympics. There are several huge venues for the events now.

The new Stadium would be the perfect centerpiece for the grand ceremonies.

Maybe it's just me but I think that would be so cool.

living in dallas or well I guess I don't anymore, but I can say without question the circus the olympics would bring to that town wouldn't be something I would want to see. the super bowl maybe but the olympics isn't something that area is ready for imho

I think they should do both. Super Bowl and Olympics. I know you like the circus.

I have aquestion, if transportation is a problem, then how did Atlanta get the 1996 Olympics? They have the worst commute in the country, this is a fact, not my opinion, based on a study done by USA Today. They have virtually no taxis & limited Subway system (MARTA). The MARTA system doesn't even go out to Turner Field, which was the main venue for the Olympics before it was converted to a baseball stadium. I haven't been to Dallas, but I would have a hard time believeing it's traffic is worse than Atlanta. I have been wrong before though.

I will be in Atlanta Saturday night, though. :D :D

DFW is a lot bigger population and area wise than Atlanta, so public transportation is a must considering how far many of the events would be apart. North Central texas(DFW Area) has a population of about 5 million and for instance there could be an olympic event at Arlington then a soccer game in Frisco....they are both in DFW, but not very close to each other at all.......

all I know is one reason cited as to why Dallas was cut in 2001 was because of their behind the times public transportation system......Atlanta may have gotten away from this because all of their events were much closer together, I'm not sure.

I for one for selfish reasons am glad we didn't get them, I would be working OT up the you know what.

Okay, I have a question as a follow up to this.

I realize the venues would be spread out over a large area, (I'd love to see how far apart) but isn't this rather expected? I mean how many people at any venue attend all kinds of different venues and can walk from one to the other? Or get there within a relatively short time?

The way I undestand it (I could easily be wrong) very few people attend more than one venue. In other words people who are there for the swimming stay in that general venue area.

Am I wrong?

well when I was a kid we wen't to the atlanta olympics and we tried to see everything, the way that was all set up and the quality of the mass transit there made it pretty simple to do. Obviously we didn't see everything but it seems if you really wanted to you could see each event at least once. THe way dallas is set up currently and the way our mass transit system is such a joke I don't think it would be possible there.

That's right... the athletes (or their families) don't have the transportation problems, it's the civilians/fans.

For example, the soccer teams would be in Arlington for the opening ceremony, but then stay the two weeks in Frisco or Plano or whatever.

Back when Keith Davis got shot (again) Cobra did an overhead shot of the area with notes.

I'd love to see where all the major venues that could be used are located from an aereal shot or group of aereal shots.

I still think it could be done, but I'm not there to know the issues.

The new stadium, Ameriquest, Lone Star are all close together.

Soccer would be at Frisco........SMU is in the center of Dallas on the map.

TCU is in the center of Fort Worth.

Cotton Bowl is just south of I30, just east of Downtown Dallas.

texas Motor Speedway is just north of tarrant County in Denton County I believe.

Lake ray Hubbard on the map (lake that Garland is written over) was a noted spot for us for possible sailing events.

So, by what I see from this the transportation problems are not access road related, so much as they are vehicles designated to make the trips.

Plenty of highways and access routes in the Metroplex, the problem more comes for the spectators that would depend more on public transportation, we are pretty much limited to DART buses and railway which is currently still expanding......DART only currently services through 13 cities in the Metroplex, Dallas County alone has I believe 23 or 24 municipalities alone, doesn't even count Tarrant County or Collin COunty.......with spectators spread throughout the Metroplex in hotels, there you see the problem with that public transportation.

one other problem I failed to mention the committe had was the location of Olympic Village in correlation with the evnt sites.....in the bid Dallas had Olympic Village at Fair Park where the Cotton Bowl is, problem is that is not close to many other venues and to be honest, Fair Park is not the best areas of town (high crime rate area)...........

Now this is all well before the new stadium or before we had any clue it would be in Arlington, so I am sure a new bid down the road would have the Olympic Village in the Arlington Area, which makes since being in the middle, although you can still see form the map how far the Frisco Stadium is for soccer, easily a one hour plus drive from Arlington and that's with lighter traffic.

in rush hour from mid dallas to mid fort worth has taken me 2 plus hours
the traffic from the olympics would be right along with rush hour I would guess, though it could be way less. The main roads between dallas and fort worth don't have a seperate HOV lane for busses and such so I don't see how our roads could handle it. The buses also stop running at some point at night I forget when, it would be in the range of planning that I don't think the local dallas government could handle. Fort worth perhaps could handle it as they seem slightly less inept

I don't care how far away the soccer venue is. It still isn't far enough. :D

Yeah, I can see the Olympic village needing to be close to the stadium.

Expand the DART and use the thousands of school buses; paint em with the olympic colors. If you plan it right, it will work. There actually would not be much to build: Velodrome for cycling, Olympic Village, maybe a Track and Field Temp stadium. With the Universities nearby, all the other sports should be covered. Actually, probably less needed for overall building/expenditure then most other cities need. Hold it the first 2 weeks in June, weather will not be that hot.

Why build a velodrome? Just make them ride their bikes at the Texas Motor Speedway. :lmao2:

At The Unveiling, Jerry said he wants to have the new stadium host the Olympics. This will have nothing to do with Dallas, this is all Arlington (thanks Laura Miller - beeeyatch). The only effect on Dallas should be hotel occupancy of the guests who travel 25 miles from Dallas to Arlington.

You make a point about Laura "Liar" Miller.

If Ron Kirk was still mayor of Dallas, I guarantee you the Cowboys new stadium would be built in Dallas. JJ gave Dallas every opportunity, when they dropped the ball (as Miller was more concerned with not allowing people to smoke in private businesses, restaurants), Arlington stepped up.

Even if the Olympics were in Arlington or when the Superbowl comes here, Final Four etc..., the whole metroplex would play a huge role though, every event can't be held in Arlington and as you said, Arlington does not have near the hotel rooms.
