We need 2 see Davis in pass blocking compared to Rico as well. That is very key.

Interesting battle for the #3 RB. Thought Davis was the best back last night, kind of reminded me of Phillip Tanner. He also had a good kickoff return. Dowdle played well, but there seems to be more juice from Davis thus far.

I agree, he looked like he was hitting the hole hard (that's what she said) as well as being shifty and decisive in his cuts. I think he's got a shot at the 3rd RB spot.

I would guess Dowdle is a done deal as 3 rb unless you see Davis play with the starters in game three (this is if Zeke and Pollard do not play). It seems like every team has the RB in preseason who looks great in these games, but is never heard from again once the preseason ends.

I like Davis but in the end I think it comes down to who can come in a play special teams. As a 3rd RB your likely not getting much play so you must make yourself valuable in other areas.

And the better blockers are on the field too …
so stop actine like practice and PS hero's make difference when the lights come onthey typically DO NOT..its rare and most TC heros barely make the team..mnice depth but not jumping up and down with excitement, its the preseason.

I didn't act like that at all. And I didn't say anything about Davis being a difference maker in the regular season, nor did I remotely "jump up and down with excitement". You are way overstating what I wrote.

I was merely talking about the 3rd RB spot on the roster, and only said the reason given for why Rico hasn't looked as good as Davis in the preseason games has another side to it. Sure earlier in the game Rico may be playing against better players, but if you recognize that you also have to recognize he is playing with better players.

And let's not act like Rico has a secure lock on anything. That 3rd RB spot is not set at this point.

I bet you happy meal Rico makes the team his ST, NFL experience etc and hes done nothing post-surgery to suggest him being cut, he looks pretty close to what's hes always been. i see him run he looks the part , his ST play is great as well. Like Noah, he will make it on that alone. they do enough on offense, but ST play is great..

if the FO finds way to keep 4 greats but if all RBS are dime dozen lie the zone claims you can dumber dive for starters LMAo

why we worried about RB3 cut them all bring one back if pollard or Zeke go down i mean dime a dozen yo! zekes an overrated FB apparently anyone can do his job..:muttley: that is why you cant trust this place to pick players those saying dak sux and zekes overrated are why they use keyboards in virtual world to fill out fake fill out rosters :) the Gms around here get tiresome. So not you im replying to all who read..

i can care less who the rb3 is or truly the qb2 ...right Dak goes down Grier will be better than rush and will take us to the sb :)) blah blah blah:confused:

Davis definitely has looked a little better, but would like to see him play more in the 1st half against better competition.

Dowdle has definitely had to face better defenders. Of course, that generally means he has better blockers in front of him, too.

His NFL experience? He had 7 carries for 24 yards in 2020 and sat out the entire 2021 season. As for what he's always been, that's just a guy who edged out some other not particularly special guys to get the 3rd RB spot, which is no different than Davis is trying to do now. As for special teams, he has one solo tackle and assisted on 3 others.

None of this suggests the kind of experience the Cowboys will feel they can't afford to lose or that someone else can't replace or exceed.

All this said, I'm not saying Davis will beat out Dowdle. All I've said is Davis has looked better than Dowdle this preseason. Yes, there can be other factors - the uncertainty of the players these guys are playing with and competing against makes preseason hard to judge by.

As for the QB commentary, which, by the way, has nothing to do with what we were talking about, your take on QB2 not mattering has a very notable flaw. While it's true that if Dak gets hurt and is out the rest of the season neither Grier or Rush is likely to have big playoff success, you are ignoring the reality that an injury to Dak may not be season ending. What if the Cowboys are doing well in the division and Dak were to miss 2-5 games? In that case having a QB that can just win 1-2 games could be the difference between making the playoffs or not, and Dak could be back before the playoffs.

The same applies to backup at RB. If Zeke or Pollard goes down we won't even need RB3 to take a major role. Just spelling whichever is left will do the job. And, again, suppose Zeke or Pollard are only out for a few games and the team just needs help getting through those games?

We never make the correct decision and churn the roster in hopes of keeping the guy with a higher ceiling. See Noah Brown.

I don't know that they really thought of Noah Brown as having a higher ceiling. I feel like he was always viewed as a role player who could fill the #5 WR spot and play special teams.

In this case, Dowdle has been with the team for 2 years (one on injured reserve) and really hasn't distinguished himself in any way, so I don't see a lot of risk whatever they decide between him and Davis.

The reality is that there are a TON of guys in the world who can carry the ball effectively if that's all you ask him to do. The issue with the modern NFL is that there are so many other things a running back is asked to do.. Unless you are Barry Sanders or Adrian Peterson if you can't block and you can't catch you aint gittin on the field. I might add in know your assignments but that kinda goes without saying.. I watched Davis in college and can attest that he is a really good receiver but I don't recall seeing him asked to block much at Florida. Doesn't mean he can't or won't.. that just wasn't what they wanted him to do in college.
