Thoughts on Mazi

Broaddus said on the Fan this week that he thought Mazi was playing too much read and react technique he was taught at Michigan, causing him to look slow footed at the snap. Said he is caught between techniques, but that when he did what the Cowboys told him to do, he looked just fine. We'll see if that pays out during the season. Also mentioned sometimes he sometimes looks tired and it may be a conditioning thing they need to work out with him. Both appear to be solvable.

astute observation and easily correctable. Can we ever forget when Carmen Ronzonni was caught between his Catfish Hunter and his Warren Spahn?

More including the source, since I cannot edit the post anymore (10 minute limit)

Here is the video/audio: https://www.audacy.com/1053thefan/s...dus-reviews-the-tape-from-cowboys-vs-seahawks

Other highlights:

OL:
He also liked Josh Ball in the game after thinking he wouldn't make the roster earlier in the pre-season. He thinks Farniok is better at C than at G, and that Bass is doing some good things on the OL.

WR:
He thinks Jalen Tolbert may challenge Gallup for WR3 eventually.
He complimented Jalen Brooks.

RB:
They took Malik Davis out of pass blocking situations and substituted Dowdle. Asks whether they keep 4 backs.

I would be worried if he continues to look like this all season. If he doesn’t show significant improvement as the season goes on, I don’t think he’s ever going to be the player we were hoping for. He’s going to end up being another Taco and Trysten Hill.
That's possible. The number of 1st round busts is higher than most think. But his biggest issue was technique a d poor coaching so I'd like to see how he progresses next year before I worry about him. I said during the draft I'm happy with the pick but I'd have gone with that QB that fell if he was even close on my board.

People are expecting us to be elite at NT. We’ll be solid with a duo of Hankins and Mazi.

Dude, you know there are FAR MORE BUSTS at quarterbacks taken in the first two rounds than at skilled and or other positions?? Yes its true... Now if you wanna argue we probably should have took a quarterback after the fifth round someone like Stetson Bennett, who I was high on, I mean at that point in the draft why not? he was already older more experienced came off of productive team and look at so far in preseason, how he's looking yet this board made fun of him and said he's old that is overrated he's never going to be anybody..hmm agian here comes the knowitall internet gms,

I mean didn't isn't that why Tom Brady and Tony Romo and Kurt Warner all got passed up and look what happened with them. So if you wanted to address the backup quarterback situation with a possibility they could be the quarterback of the future you should have done that after the fifth round when we had more flexibility with the draft picks.

This is why you should leave it up to the scouts and the GM's to who they pick they like this guys measurables he's big he's strong he fits a big glaring need when Hankins isn't going to be here next year, I DO NOT believe he's not gonna be a bust...
why people keep saying that and just two preseason games seriously can we stop the nonsense???!!!!
It's not about the flashy pick sometimes it's about adding a player that fits a need but it's not a reach everyone says this on these boards early on Tyler Smith was a project he was a reach that wasn't true, there are people on here that said we shouldn't even take Micah Parsons because he's an off the ball linebacker when if they watched him in college, they'd see what our scouts saw that he was much more than that but people saying that he wasn't even worth being taken at #12 and we got a third round pick..
crazy opinions like that is why fans need to stop trying to be GM we take a quarterback that sits for three years and still might be a bust or take a guy which was really close to the second round, by the way where we are picking, we need to keep that in mind, that could possibly fill a need that we haven't filled in a decade...

I mean we finally fixed the safety position I remember the fan saying that the front office and the coaching staff didn't know how to value the safety position and we were never gonna fix that area.. hmm also a bad opinion from the fan base.AS Usual

I think we're doing a good job of finding new tight ends this scouting department is has to fill a lot of holes every year they lose about 17 to 25% of their players that they have to refill the bottom of that roster and at the same time replace players acquisitions that we've been scrambling to do so for a long time.

So again, you're right we got to wait not one year, not two years, I think we should see progress between now and three years and we'll be able to make a real decision on Mazi or many other draft picks I mean can we not knee jerk overreact after two preseason games.....??:popcorn:

I think this fan base forgets what a nose tackle really is so much so because we haven't had one in such a long time that they think what they're seeing is poor play and what I'm telling you this is a rookie who's had far more positive plays than negative he's done far more good things so far what I've seen in camp and in preseason that I believe at worst we're going to get a solid rotational nose tackle player for a very long time he's going to get stronger and smarter with experience and I believe regardless of his stat sheets,
he's going to fill a nice role for this team he just gives me that vibe that he's big and can get bigger.. I mean he's in great shape he's not fat nose tackle he's a pile of stone type nose tackle meaning he can get stronger and he can learn more technique he has not played a lot of football from what I understand. so, he's still learning and we're already getting this is raw vanilla mazi and so I like what I'm seeing because he has so much more room to grow and I think that he will.

If he doesn't we can all revisit this in three years and talk about it but right now the overreactions are priceless just like last year all preseason historically bad offseason this is going to be a bad year even after Prescott breaks his hand nobody seems to be on Prescott's bandwagon but then they thought the season was really over they started using the word tank this happened when we started three and five in 2018 fans just need to stop with the ridiculous saturation of negativity in doom and gloom sky is falling attitudes on players and what our record might be how about this enjoy the season..

It's one game at a time you string together them and you hope that in the end of the season your team is in contention in some manner we just need to make the playoffs.. But all the early talk about what they think the records are going to be the rankings are going to be already talking about rookies are busts because of what they're seeing I mean is it Tolbert one of those guys everybody said was going to be a complete bust and while I don't know where he's going to end up, he's definitely improved from his rookie year to now.....

I know it's human nature to do this but it's just ridiculous this judging rookie this soon is the most ridiculous out of all the ridiculousness that's said in social media...

No one was underwhelmed with Parsons. Had HOF all over him. This is a ridiculous comparison. We are clueless in drafting DT. Nothing since Maryland. Nothing.
Be fair. I don't recall being underwhelmed like J12B said fans were, but Parsons didn't have "HOF all over him" after 2 preseason games

Let me clarify a few things.

I thought Mazi was a good pick and I think he’s got huge upside but that’s not what I’m evaluating. Last season it was a lineball battle between Tyler Smith and McGovern in training camp and Smith hit the ground running, he went on to have a great season.

This isn’t me giving up on Mazi but Bohanna looks better than him right now and you don’t typically carry three 1-techs on a game day roster.

No way would I have taken a QB with that pick. I can’t believe some of you think Dak has been that bad. I don’t follow college football, so I had no idea about Mazi. I said when we drafted him, I hope he ends up being a good player and so far he hasn’t been. From reading reports he’s having to do a few things he didn’t do in college. Hopefully he’ll adjust and come around.

They use first round picks as if they are the solution to gaping holes in the starting lineup.

They’ve gotten away with it lately but eventually it’s going to bite them.

That all said I have no idea how anyone could conclude anything about anyone after two glorified walkthroughs.

If youre thinking he may be Aaron Donald immediately I suggest adjusting your expectations.
There's the Aaron Donald straw man again. Look, nobody is expecting Aaron Donald. We just want the guy to look like he was worth drafting with a 1st round pick. So far that isn't happening. Not even close to that.

Game 2 was bad, but he held up well at the point of attack game 1

I think people are expecting Daron Payne
Anyone who looked at him before the draft knew he wasn’t gonna be an instant star. But he’s a freak athlete who when he learns to play could be really good. It’s all gonna be about his desire to be all he can be but it’s gonna take a couple years for him to develop and learn
He just used brut strength in college but that’s not enough in the nfl

I don't follow college football either. I do follow pro football. And as far as QB's go I believe if you have one rated equal to or higher than anyone else you absolutely have got to consider taking him, especially if the guy you do have is coming up to the end of his contract. I don't think you have to do something stupid like the broncos did or the browns or anything like that. But if your scouts say there is a qb rated the same or higher than Mazi, Dak nearing the end of his contract, love him or hate him, smart thing to do is grab the QB let him sit a year and see what happens. Neither guy are gonna help immediately though Mazi will be more useful this year. But if the other guy develops then you save 40+ million on having to extend Dak. It's just about team building and how you want to do it going forward.

Micah did not underwhelm during his first preseason.

He flashed early unlike Mazi Bohanna
Ok but lets not forget one was playing pressure LB and one is playing the 1 tech... one is suppose to flash the other is suppose to eat blockers. Your 1 tech doesnt jump off the sheet generally.. We have been begging for a heavywieght run stopper in the middle for 30 years .. we get one and eveyones like "Man why is he not sacking the QB!!!!!"

With the Cowboys coming off back to back 12-5 playoff seasons. It would’ve been stupid to use their first round pick on a QB, especially one that wasn’t even taken in the first round. The Cowboys could be on the brink of finally breaking through, they need their first round pick on the field, not standing around on the sidelines carrying a clipboard. Mazi will help immediately if he starts coming around.

Mazi was picked with the 26th overall pick. Not top 5, 10, 15 etc... He wasn't the can't miss day 1 starter. The hype on Mazi was his size and athletic ability that hopefully could be molded over time. Day 2 prospect with day 1 athletic ability
Micah was originally seen as a top 5 player/best player on defense who slipped due to off the field "issues"/over analyzing and sitting out his last year due to C-19 skip-ability.

There will be some growing pains with Mazi. To expect a day 1 legit starter was over hyping him. Hopefully, by year 2 it starts to click with him on what the coaches want him to do and also adapt to the NFL game.
I have no real thoughts on the games so far cause we are talking about two preseason games. He is going to look off at times.

He will pick it up quick.. there is the fact things might look diferent when facing the other teams 1st offense when- Dlaw, Micah, Osa, LVE and the crew are in the game also.

PS as depth maybe. I honestly dont see him getting poached
Me neither.
Sorry, a big guy with some mobility, but i just don't see anything special about him as a player.
I could see him or/and Gallimore on the practice squad.

And that's why I'm not mad at the pick even though I'd probably go a different route depends on how I really set the draft board. Mazi probably isn't much of a difference maker year 1. Year 2 I think he can/will be.
