Thoughts on Michael Gallup

Not sure how anyone could have expected Gallup to be 100% this year. It was more surprising that the Cowboys extended him. If he comes back in 2023 as the guy we once knew, then it's all good.
I got tarred and feathered on this board for saying that he would not be ready when the team indicated his return date and his timing/connection with Dak would be off. I will say the same thing I said when they extended Gallup, Dallas should have kept Wilson instead.

Thanks to doctor Jerry
I'm not gonna put that all on Jerry. The trainers got to sign off and so does Gallup, Jerry may have pushed for it, but they still have a say if he's ready or not and most players are going to say they are even if not 100%. Coming back from injury, it's not just physical, but mental as well..... gotta have that confidence in cutting, jumping etc.

The young man was paid handsomely this past off season to be that 2nd guy. We all know he came off an injury, and was maybe rushed back too soon due to our lack of adding talent. With that said, he's got a handsome cap number this upcoming season. Do we let him play at that number, do we ask him to take a pay cut, add more years to his deal or what??? Is he a guy that can actually be that 2nd WR for us? I think this off season is big for him, seeing and having more confidence coming off that injury in how he'll progress. Please give your thoughts!
Gallup is playing this year 100%.
His 2023 money is guaranteed so there is no renegotiation or pay cuts.
They could restructure his base down but likely don't as if he is not recovered and better they can cut him next off-season.

Dallas knew they weren't getting 100% of Gallup last year.
And they didn't pay for 100% of Gallup.
They guaranteed him financial security with 24M GTD and he GTD them that he would be very price sensitive on high end with a 57M over 5 years deal.
His 2024 base is only 8.5M which is really cheap for a WR2 but too costly for a WR4.
His play will decide where he falls.

But it is a discussion for next year... except where roster construction is concerned.
Where does team slot him in for 2023?
Is he de facto WR2 again?
Is WR2 an open comp?
I'd lean to the 2nd scenario.

Does it matter who is running routes when Dak is throwing lasers to the other team?

Early returns do not mean this was a bad deal for Dallas. Just that it started out that way.

If Gallup returns to even 90% of his prior form that is a bargain basement deal.
Ced Wilson cost MIA 1M more last year than Gallup cost Dallas.

Dallas 5-year deal with Gallup is probably more team friendly than Ced Wilson's 3-year deal.

And while I think Gallup was toast all year with just zero confidence, he did outproduce Wilson by quite a lot.
Wilson only had 12 catches for 126 yards on the season.
Gallup had 39 and 424.

Of course, opps came Gallup's way and he botched them big time.

With much of Wilson's money GTD for 2023 as well not sure MIA doesn't trade him.
Perhaps to Dallas???
They can't want much for him given his spot on the depth chart.
Remove his 7M base salary and keep it stepping.

He will be closer to 100% in 2023. We need to draft or sign some more talent to the WR corps.

He can be an asset for this team. The FO (once again) overvalued their own evaluations and leaned far too heavily on him to contribute following the Amari trade.

JJ just can’t take off the rose colored glasses he views this franchise through

He should be better this year. Too early to say take a cut.

Fehoko has done nothing for 2 years. Tolbert has done even less considering his draft stock.

Putting any hope in them developing is a mistake. We need to add 3-4 WRs this offseason and let the competition commence. Clean house and get rid of guys who can’t play

I disagree. Because they did this with Cedric Wilson and Noah Brown. You can’t get better if you are racking up dnps…. Im just over adding these. We are in a playoff push. Go sign a veteran because they aren’t going to play young receivers.

I don’t see where we disagree. I am all for adding 3-4 WRs this offseason, and FA is where I would add a viable #2 and invest some cap space.

But don’t stop there. Invest draft capital as well and create as much competition as possible. We need production not “promising” players that never contribute.

Noah Brown? I would cut him and move on.

I think that’s where we disagree. I might look at a speed receiver later on but I wouldn’t invest in a receiver early..

Noah is cool I just need him further down the depth chart not the number 2 or 3.

I'm not worried about Gallup in the least next year.

Signing him was a blatantly awful decision at the time, and now. However, in his defense, maybe he has better results if he doesn't have to try to make an acrobatic catch every time.

Another bad contract. We could have had Wilson for less and he was productive in our offence. Instead, we sign Washington and trade Cooper...

If they start '23 without a reliable number 2 then many problems will still exist...
