Agree 100%! He needs to step up if he wants to keep his role as a slot receiver. I think he will over the next several weeks as long as he stays healthy.

I like Beasley, he has a ton of quickness and could be effective in the slot. He has a similar skill set to Ammendola, Welker or Hawkins (Bengals) if molded properly so the last thing I would want is for the guy to get cut. But I know from what I've read the Cowboys like Green,Armstrong,Benford and even Danny Coale (even though he is hurt).... And there's no way you can keep all those guys so he has to step up, I think he will too

I think we all are.. still waiting on his response.

At first I was very impressed with Selvie, but that was until I decided to go back and watch the game a second time. Folks, the guy grabs a load of jersey on just about every play! He was fortunate these purblind referees were far too incompetent to get him called for holding. Go back and watch the game folks! There is no way you can miss it.

As for Arkin, I don't feel as though I need to say much here. I know he is still a youngster, but his play is far too inconsistent to ever consider him getting in on even a single play during a regular season game. He might hold his own on an entire series, only to piss away his performance by getting man-handled on one play in the next series. We can't afford to send guys out there that even show the slightest susceptibility to getting throw on their backside; because chances are if he falls on his backside, so does Romo.

As for the rest of my player assessments, they are fairly self-explanatory, except for maybe Beasley. Go back and watch the game a second time; key in on Mr. Beasley. Even on the plays where the young man didn't get the ball thrown his way, it seemed as though he was making defenders stumble out there--failing to keep up with Cole's rabbit-like quickness.

Beasley didn't have a particularly good game. But, in the past, he's shown a good chemistry with Romo. I'll withhold judgment till I see Tony throwing to him.

1. Frederick. Looked good at OC versus 1s and great at OG versus 2/3s.

Really? I'm not saying you're wrong, but I thought he looked much better at center than guard. It might have been assignment confusion, but he got beat on a couple plays there and was responsible for the "Wow" hit on Tanney. Don't get me wrong, he looked awesome at center, but not so great at guard, in my opinion.

Impressed: Selvie, Leary, and Matt Jonson, until he got hurt.

Not impressed: Wilcox, Tanney, and Coughman (he was horrible)

Wilcox looked slow because he was confused. Lot of work ahead of him. Tanney needs to step up in the pocket; maybe that late throw will get him going.

Good Game:
JJ - Calm, sat well, no outbursts, no sideline visits.
JG - Didn't call any bad plays, looked professorial.
Marinelli - en fuego

Bad game:
TV booth crew - Had no idea what was happening on the field most of the time; distracted, disinterested, slow off the snap, poorly prepared,
not amusing.

Which players have impressed you in our first preseason game and which players left you wanting more?

The three players that impressed me:

1. George Selvie- Showed great pursuit and great pass rushing even though he was going up against the 2nd teamers. I'm expecting him to make the team.
2. The running backs- Okay, I'm cheating a bit here, Dunbar, Tanner and Randle all looked good to me.
3. David Arkin- A little surprised here, I really only saw two plays in which he didn't look good, and both plays were positives for us.

Players who I was disappointed in:

1. JJ Wilcox- He really looked lost sometimes out there in pass coverage.
2. Cole Beasley- Just didn't show me much out there.
3. Whoever was punting- Those were some God awful punts.

The Good

1. George Selvie. Granted, it was against bad competition, but on the other hand, considering he was just supposed to be a "camp body" going against someone projected to possibly start (not so sure after last night) I'd say he at least removed the "camp body" label last night.
2. Phillip Tanner. Here's my problem: Yes, he showed up in a big way. In fact, he reminded me of the last time he showed up two years ago in preseason making it impossible to cut him. My issue? He has also had opportunities in the regular season and looked nothing like the guy we saw last night.
3. Travis Frederick. About the only thing I can say is the game doesn't seem to be too big for him. He seem's to get it. Now, I say that because while we saw him calling out the blocking assignments, I can't say I'm 100 % sure he was making the right calls. But given the effective running game, I'd say he did a good job.

The Bad

Cole Beasley. Based on last night's performance alone, I'm not even sure he would make the practice squad. He is going to have to step it up quite a bit to make the final 53 in the next 4 games.
Matt Johnson. Considering his measurables, I actually expected more from him. He really seemed slow to react in many instances. Add to that yet another injury and you have to wonder what the Cowboys see in him.
Spencer Benton/Alex Tanney/Nick Stephens. I hate to bring them up, since I don't think any of them have a chance to make the final 53 regardless of their performance in preseason, but I don't think any of these guys made the incumbent starters nervous.

Question: How often does Defensive Holding get called?

Answer: About 1 time for every 100 offensive holding calls.

I thought the slant he dropped was pretty well thrown.... The TD was under thrown but I still think he could have caught it

The slant looked like he had to reach full extention just to get his hands on it.. the TD i agree. He may have had a chance to catch it, but still a poorly thrown ball. He was wide open back there.

Beasley will not get as much time as Williams or Harris... No where close, unless they get hurt. That's pretty a pretty silly statement. I do think The 5th receiver spot is Beasley's to lose as of right now. But if he continues to play poorly he can easily lose that spot to Anthony Armstrong. I think you have delusions about what kind of player Cole Beasley is. He has done nothing to think he gets a roster spot by just showing up. I like Cole and I'm rooting for him but he has to play better than he did last night

Idk.. i understand alot of people don't see his worth, but i do.

I still say he and T Will and Harris will all get pretty equal time in the offense when the season starts unless one of them breaks out. If people think that's a silly statement, i respect your opinion to disagree.

I disagree that he's played poorly to this point, as well. He's had good reports all camp.

1. Frederick. Looked good at OC versus 1s and great at OG versus 2/3s.

2. Leary. Really moved piles. Looked far more athletic than last year. Chance to win job seems ot have him going 100 miles per hour.

3. RBs/TEs. Both groups looked really strong as units.

need more:

1. our back up QBs are um not that good.

2. Weems looked unathletic and like a 2010-2012 Cowboys OL....

3. injuries... Bass and Johnson looked good in spot duty. Need those guys to stay healthy in NFL action.

I like your lists except for the backup qbs , I think they did ok...not super, but ok. I would replace the backup qbs with Beasley, he just didn't impress me at all...and I'm a fan. Still early in the preseason though.

Grabbing the jersey of somebody trying to block you is not holding. That's why Olinemen wear their jerseys so tight, to make it hard to get hold of. Grabbing the jersey of somebody trying to block a team mate or grabbing somebody to keep them from pulling or going out into a pass pattern is holding.

Our WRs didn't give the QBs much to work with last night. There was zero separation much of the time, on top of the drops.

Wilbur - his first step was exceptional, he had great lean around the corner and was very explosive.
Frederick (the C) - Was exceptional getting to the second level. Washed down very well opening gaping holes for cut backs. There has been some argument about him being a fit in a zone scheme, last night should end that. He was, at times, our best OL.
McSurdy - this isn't a flashy pick, but I really thought he looked good, particularly against the run. He was very active and looked like a sideline-to-sideline kind of guy.

I don't really see any need to label anyone a disappointment after this game, considering the timing and nature.

I'm not trying to say he can't be valuable, he can be for sure, but he isn't going to make this roster just by showing up, he isn't that kind of player, he needs to perform that's all I was trying to say....

And the reason I said its silly to say Beasley is going to get as much playing time as Williams/Harris (piticularly Williams) is because Williams is going to get every opportunity to take that #3 WR so it's basically his job to lose. If he does lose it Dwayne Harris has proven to be a guy who makes some plays and is sure handed and Romo has a decent repoir with. Williams is a very talented Reciever though and is going to hold on to that job. Plus the offense is going to be in a 2 TE or 3 WR set a majority of the game. So i dont believe Dwayne Harris is going to get that much playing time either being the 4th guy on the depth chart and I definetly don't see this team playing too many 5 WR sets. Which is when Beasley will get his playing time outside of 1 of the top 4 guys getting hurt. I highly doubt there is any kind of platoon situation with the #3 WR spot like your suggesting. Unless Beasley has improved drastically and they feel like he needs to be on the field I think he is there for a little depth out of the slot mainly and don't expect him to get too much more than 5-10 snaps a game if he makes the team.

I'm not trying to be a dick and debate you about the same thing but I wanted to tell you why I got to my opinion... Obviously we will find out who's opinion is correct as the year goes on

Hey, i completely understand that there are a bunch of posters out there that don't see as much talent and potential in Beasley as i do, and ive made peace with that, haha.

Yup, just gotta wait and see, but i think we'll see Beasley on the field alot more often than some people think this year.

If Beasley didnt fall down and stayed on his feet he could've helped his QB out

Beasley got wide open..the QB one hopped it to him, he didn't fall down he dove forward trying to catch the pass, Beasley caught a punt in traffic, ran back a kickoff. he drew an interference in the end zone. It was the rookie QBs making the WRers look bad. Green did make a circus catch, that was impressive, but he hadn't beaten the coverage the way Beasley did.
