Time to ditch NFL ticket

I've had the Ticket now for well over a decade and I don't think I could go without it. I bought it at first for the Cowboys games, but now I watch not only the 'Boys but every other game as well. It makes those winter Sundays so much more enjoyable. Especially if you're a fantasy football junkie like myself. Plus, I get to root against the Skins, Giants and Eagles. Ahh, the good life.

Oh, and call them up and say you're cancelling your Ticket. You'll get it cheaper PLUS all the bells and whistles such as HBO, HD, etc.

This is why you need Sunday Ticket:

I still can't believe there are people who actually pay the extra $100 for HD. It's just crazy what people just give into.

I ditched it last year and didn't miss any games. Only had to watch about 3-4 online, too.

Now the online one's weren't the best experience but at least I was seeing for free what would have normally cost me basically $50+ a game.

I really started to lose taste for DTV though, when they signed that monopoly with the NFL. Same with the Madden NFL football game. I think it's crap in both cases and that the consumer should have a choice. I don't like how al'mighty n' powerful the NFL is viewing itself these days. They need to remember it's the fan that they're actually here for. The NFL is turning into some old sell-out rock band trying to charge $300 admission to play tunes that have been heard a million times over.

Actually, it's getting so bad in my eyes, that MLB is starting to regain it's appeal. I'm back to really enjoying everything about baseball once again- the atmosphere, the fans, the passion. NFL though, they need to put a gag-order on all it's players, half the management and the media. Take a cold shower and stop acting as if it's in heat. 2009 NFL = 75% prima-donnas.

I agree with you, MLB seems to have their act together. MLB.TV is pretty damn slick. I also have the iphone app which cost 10 bucks and I can listen to any game, home or away feeds.

The Masters iphone app was amazing too. It was free and you could watch it live, streaming on your phone. I hope nfl gets it together.

I dumped The NFL package a few years ago. In the last 2 years I have missed 1 game and I watched that on sopcast. I wish they would do an ala carte type of thing, but they are too greedy. They want all or nothing, so they get nothing here.

According to Wiki, here's what happened...

"On March 6, 2007, DirecTV signed a new seven-year carriage contract with the MLB. At first, it was to be an exclusive deal worth $700 million. However, as a result of viewer complaints and antitrust concerns - voiced by, among others, Massachusetts Senator John Kerry - MLB agreed to offer the package for renewal by cable systems and Dish Network."

I remember thinking how silly it was that everyone was getting all worked up over MLB's attempt to do exactly what the NFL has been doing for years.
Thanks for the correction. I agree. It does sound silly.

I ditched the Sunday Ticket about 3 years ago. It didn't make sense to pay $250 to see 2 Cowboy games which weren't aired in NY.

Same here. But thanks to my station exemption, I get the west feeds of the main four stations for .99 a piece, so for about 4 bucks a month, I think I got all of them last two or three years. :)

So, in your case, it is less crazy to drop a couple grand on what looks like a 50+ inch plasma and NOT watch the games in HD?

I got it to be able to watch whatever game I wanted, I'm got friends that are fans of random teams, from the Saints to the Panthers to the 49ers, so they all like coming over to catch a peek at their team and drink some beers.

I don't know why anyone would get it just to watch one particular team. The fact that the $250 doesn't get you HD games though, is pure BS.

Now this I could see. If you and some boys are going to get together, have a few beers and laughs, watch some football together, yeah then I could see doing it. Mainly because I'd have everyone interested in getting together like that pitch in and help pay for the package.

But the people who pay that much JUST to watch a couple of Cowboys games they'd otherwise not get? That's just crazy.

Nope.. You're wrong.. You're absolutely 100% wrong.. why ?

Because the package is: $280 for the basic, nonHD package.

Yes, $280

Oh well that makes it SOOOO much better then doesn't it? :p

Now they're not crazy anymore...they're flat stupid. :p

I actually feel blessed to be in Canada. Here in toronto, I get ST through our cable package ($30/month) for min 4 months. I get 3-4 games on ST in HD, not including the local games. For a total of $150 max, I get 4 months (Sept-jan) full of all sports (MLB, NHL, NBA, NFL, NCAA FOOTBALL).

It is surprising, as we usually have to pay more $$$$$ than you guys in the US

I ditched the ticket after I bought a 46" HD tv and the crappy compressed NFL ticket feed that I noticed on my 36" SD tv became even more noticable with the larger tv.

Some of you guys blow my mind... You wont pay for DTV but you will pay for Authentic Jerseys? You wont pay DTV but you'll pay to go to the game and get raped..All I'm saying is that Your paying because the NFL has sold the rights for billions of $$$ to DTV and your paying whether your a subscriber to the NFL tix or not ...even DTV subscribers basic package are paying for the Price of the NFL...Dont hate the player hate the game...Its all about money..Now the way you could have gotten around the nfl tix a few years ago was to get a dish DTV or dish network and get local Dallas and watch that but the FCC made it mandatory to get local only where you live..NYC Miami, TX, CA whatever but local tv cable networks made that a new rule, but if you were to have Dallas local before the made it a law you would be grandfathered in

Not sure what you mean by not watching in HD. The TV on left is HD, and the game mix channel is now in HD as well. And of course I constantly switch back and forth from the game mix channel to the various games, all in HD.

When Cowboys games are on, the bigger TV is used for that game only and I'll switch between the game mix channel and other games on the smaller TV. Or I'll switch between the Cowboys game and other games on the big TV and use the game mix on the smaller TV to know when the Cowboys game comes back from commercial.

Edit: I get what you're saying now. I didn't say it was crazy to get the Superfan to watch the games in HD. I said it was crazy to pay for it.

I'm debating whether or not to ditch it this coming season. There are 5 games that definitely will not be shown locally. The rest are prime time or 4:15 PM EST start times, which means they'll probably be aired nationally. I don't like sports bars, but I hate to miss those 5 games (Live). Sopcast just doesn't do it for me.

I had the same debate at the end of last year. My wallet won the argument, when I discovered that I had only missed one game on regular broadcast. With Tivo and DVD, I won't miss anything, even if I have to go to a sports bar. I had the Ticket for as many years I think they offered it. Charging extra for HD really upset me also. I'm hoping my neighbor signs up for it also.

Here in Florida, I am approximately equidistant between three pro-football teams....Jaguars, Bucs, and Dolphins. Even with the "national game" advantage the Cowboys enjoy, I usually will miss miss a handful of Cowboys games without Sunday Ticket. Additionally, with Sunday Ticket I get to watch our division rivals or other games of interest around the NFL with the Red Zone channel keeping me informed of those teams close to scoring.

Is Sunday Ticket "worth" the money? When it comes to television, I watch very little outside of NFL coverage, preferring to get my news and information via the web, the WSJ, and a bit of the BBC on satellite radio (I have to grit my teeth on the BBC occasionally but that is "off topic" here :p: ). As far I'm concerned, it's worth every penny.

Gotta have the Superfan to have RZ Channel and all games in HD. It's a racket but they got me. I'm hooked.
