Time to redo Romo's contract?

We are all in the dumps about recent developments and as much as many hope we go after a QB in the off-season..

most of us know deep-down..

we all know Romo will be here again next year as the starter.

so my next question is..

given the past and the present of Romo not being able to play full seasons without some sort of performance reducing injury..

Is it time to ask for a contract reduction..?

I think as it is.Romo has total control of our cap and without relief I don't see how we can get better. Witten is not far behind.

That contract was an investment in advance for winning games..

that has not happened other than 2014.

We have to prepare for the future.

When Payton Manning left the Colts so the Colts could draft anew..

they did it.

Worked out Ok for both parties.

Is Jones going to repeat as he did with Aikman with letting him play too long and get injuries forcing him out.?

Leaving the team unprepared at the most important position would seal our fate for another 10 years.

I'm curious about what you guys think and how could we do it fairly?

Why would Romo agree to a contract reduction? If he's no longer part of the team's vision, then we cut him ... and eat the pro-rated portion of his signing bonus. I believe he would count $30 mil in dead money if we let him go. He holds all the cards.

Look around the NFL and you can see what The QB position costs. He's earned every penny of it.

You can't just ask a player to take a pay cut while on a contract. All you can do is re-work it into signing bonuses and/or push money down the line (as they already did with Romo). If you're worried about Romo fulfilling his current contract, the absolute worst thing you can do is try to push money down the line.

Personally, I would convert as much of the contract into a signing bonus as the team can afford and take the load off those final years.

Huh? How do you figure that? Maybe this season, but certainly not over the life of the contract or in guaranteed money.

No. You just let his contract play out a couple more years than move on when cutting him makes cap sense.

This is what can happen when a FO renews a contract of ANY NFL player in his mid 30's. Injuries and/or performance can drop off severely and you are left holding the bag. Jethro put himself over a barrel when he HAD to pay Romo with no successor in mind. I am sure Romo will be back next year, but it is imperative that they have not only a suitable backup, but draft a QB in the first round which will probably be top 5.

We had to pay Romo based on his production and the market. Successor of not, it was pay up or watch him walk. Letting him walk was clearly the worse of the two evils, regardless of how much we may regret the contract in a year or two.

There are only four quarterbacks in the league with a higher total value to their contract. Romo also has one of the highest percentages of guaranteed money. The three guys you mentioned aren't even close to Romo in average guaranteed money per year.
