Remember servers and bartenders are the last people to touch whatever you are about to consume.

I usually tip about 20%. I never stiff the waiter/waitress. They put up with jerks all the time. My ex was one of them. He was SO incredibly rude to the wait staff and I have no idea why. I usually tried to be very polite/nice because he was such an ********.

In the "Cheers/Jeers" section of my local paper, some people that work the carry-out counter at restaurants were complaining about people not tipping. I never realized that the person working the pick-up window at Chili's was expecting a tip?

You're a cheap *** dude

Unfortunately I do not have the financial luxury to give away money when it is not mandatory. If they got paid solely on tips of course I would tip.

Do you buy from every door to door salesman that comes by? That is how they feed their children, right? D*** hypocrite.

If you cannot afford the tip, you cannot afford the meal. End of story.

I can afford to tip, just not to every Jane Doe. They get paid for their duties.

If you cannot tip then do not order food or drinks from an establishment where it is customary to do so.

boom! this right here, if you can not AFFORD 15% you can not afford to eat out, so eat some ramen that night and go out the next night because you saved about 4-5 bucks so you can afford to tip

I have never had an experience where a server deserved nothing..ever

I have. How about not coming to our table to get our drinks for a full 25 minutes. Then when she did come, took another 15 minutes to bring the drinks back. After we finally got our food after another long wait, she NEVER came back to the table. We had to find another waitress to take over duties. Turns out that our original waitress was on the other side of the restaurant yucking it up with her friends. And I have no problem tipping; I tip generously when the waiter does their job. I also have no problem not tipping if said waiter is doing a terrible job. I start with a generous figure and it goes down based on performance.

2.13 an hour, the gov takes taxes out of your check based on an expected 15% of your total sales coming to you in the form of a tip, so no they quite literally do not get paid for their duties if you don't pay them

I have always tipped however I do not consider tipping mandatory, I just have never had an experience so bad that I felt the server deserved nothing. I'll tip anywhere from 10-30% depending on the cost of the meal and the quality of the service.

Make no mistake though there are certainly scenarios where no tip would be left, I have simply never encountered them.

Which is why they should make sure they do their job well, and most do. Most of the things servers get blamed for are not their fault. As long as they are courteous and do their best they deserve to be tipped.

I've heard other people give accounts of very rude servers who they did not tip, which I am fine with. I've never had a server be especially rude or course with me, though.

I find it amusing being called that by someone who refuses to use proper grammar and punctuation. Your well thought out contribution to this thread has been noted.

He made a good point, regardless. You tip at a restaurant or you end up with stuff in your food that comes out of every human's nastiest orifices. Bon appetite!

I agree, I know what good service can be and I adjust my expectations based on how many tables they are taking care of, if they get double sat, and other things based on having been in that situation before. If they are running I am tipping, if they are chatting with other servers and my drink empty it is going down. I still rarely tip less than 15%, usually 20-30.

I do tip at every "fine" restaurant. I don't tip at places where you order at the front and then they bring you your food with their hand out at you.

I will say that I don't usually tip at places where I'm not being waited on.

What about eating at McDonalds? Do you tip then?

Nope, I don't tip at fast food places because those employees get paid at least minimum wage and I'm not being waited on.

They should raise the minimum wage for waiters/waitresses to the national min. so that tips become extra incentive for performing their duties exceptionally.
