But a proven and productive backup does not exist. If they did, they would be on a team by now. The QB position is pretty slim pickings, you either overpay for below average players or you try to stick with what you have on your roster.

There are more proven and productive options available than Mettenberger. And there will be even more such options after the cuts.

Signing a guy out of panic or because no options exist (not the case) is a poor strategy in any business.

This. If metty b is as trash as a qb as this board believes then Moore should beat him out easily, am I rite or wut?

Let the best man win qb2

Mettenberger-QB
Freeney-DE
Boykin-CB

Should all be brought in immediately. They all represent potential upgrades at positions of weakness. Use the early waiver claim while we still have it.

Who????

and claiming him means we get his contract at 2yrs and 600k a year, none guaranteed

Mettenberger is not the best option available, how hard is that for you to understand? Cheer lead all you want for the guy, that doesn't change that fact.

Who is saying Metty B is the best option? No one... you just keep hearing what you want to hear. I think he would push Moore to get better. If you think you know of someone else that can do that then by all means, what's his name. All I see you doing is shooting down ideas because you think you are so smart.

Almost ANY QB free agent is better than a guy who is 0-10 as a starter and has the worst QBR ever in first 10 games. No move is better than a bad move, no matter how cheap.

Practice some patience, better options will be available after the first cuts and before regular season starts.

except our current QB2

the longer we wait means less time with the team and a diminishing chance of helping this year

I disagree. And appears Cowboys are of same mind. If Cowboys are thinking SB, then they need to focus on bringing in a War Daddy on the D line.

Difference between Moore and Mettenberger should Romo go down is nominal.

Funny how people are scared of bringing in competition that doesn't really affect the salary cap. What has Moore ever done to warrant not having competition?

There can be many reasons why they would let him go. Maybe Mariota doesn't like having a young QB behind him. Maybe these coaches don't have a tie to Mettenberger since the people that drafted him are no longer there. Maybe there is a personality issue with him and one of the coaches. He is not similar in style to Mariota so maybe they just thought he wouldn't fit.

Mettenberger had a few decent games for Tennessee with a really bad supporting cast....even the number two pick struggled to win games with the bad team a year ago.

Not at the price of his contract. And why does this have to be panic? We just take a look.

Did I say let's get the least option? No I did not. I said rather than just handing the job to Moore, let's at least have a guy on the roster that can push Moore to get better.

I would rather not waste time with a proven loser. Mettenberger is the "least" of the available options. How does Moore get better being pushed by a scrub?

Arm strength is not the most important criteria for a QB. Otherwise Jeff George would be in HOF.

If arm strength, size and cost are your most important factors for QB (or backup QB) success then you may as well advocate for JaMarcus Russell. At least he won SOME games.

And wins and loses are not all on the QB. He is to compete with Moore and Showers for a roster spot now the starting job.

This time of year is the perfect time to bring in a guy like Mettenberger and see what he's got. Especially considering the low price. Unless there's some red flag I'm not aware of.

If he can't beat out Mettenberger which I doubt he can then he is the scrub. Moore is not the future of this franchise. We need somebody in case Tony goes down.
