Terrell Owens thinks Jason Garrett leaked information that got him chased out of Dallas

"Former Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens was the headline at Ticketstock 2016 over the weekend. Here's some things the always entertaining wideout had to say about his time in Dallas:

Why did the Cowboys want to get rid of him:

"There were some things that kind of swirled around right at the end of the 2009 season. I think everybody has heard that there was some rumbling going around, some whispers about me saying that Tony and Witten were drawing up plays, this and that. I understood where I was in my career and I wasn't trying to be divisive in the locker room or anything like that.

Once I got to Dallas, I felt like I had matured a little bit, I wanted to communicate with my head coaches, so if there was anything internal going on, we talked about it, even as a receiver group, whatever is said in that room, stays in that room. There were some things that were leaked out that were supposed to be in house from meetings that myself, Roy Williams and Patrick Crayton had with Jason Garrett. It just so happened, of the four of us -- and maybe five of us with coach [Ray] Sherman -- knowing about that meeting, things got leaked. That's a shame because, of those four guys, outside of Garrett, I'll put my life on it that none of them said anything.

So that's how things started their downspiral and got out of control. I was all about winning, so if there was something that I saw in practice that was happening in games that was causing us to have hardships in games, and even lose games, then I had an issue with it. So if I address something with my teammates and my coaches and I thought it was supposed to be internal, that's why I said it. I never said it for it to get outside of those walls.

Those are some of the things that happened and that had gotten out. It's unfortunate that it did, but I understood my role. If I addressed something about where the ball was going, it wasn't necessarily for me to just get the ball [more]. I understood my role. I played with the best receiver in the game in Jerry Rice. I went on to play in Philly where I kind of adopted some of those things along with some of the things I brought to the table to understand the nature of being No. 1 receiver. You have to do the intangibles -- that's blocking, that's being a decoy sometimes and that's really stepping up to the plate when your number is called.

With me having that level of maturity and understanding of the game, I addressed some of those issues. Sometimes balls were being thrown into double-coverage when guys were open, and that's what I wanted to address and bring to the attention of the staff. Some of those things got out, and that's unfortunate. That was me trying to be a leader. That was me trying to be a team player for the betterment of the team because I was brought here to win football games and try to get to the Super Bowl."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I thought this was an interesting read. I don't believe for a second that TO wasn't self-centered and a locker room cancer during his time in Dallas, but I also think there is probably some amount of truth to what he's saying here. Thoughts?

TO still doesn't get it. If anyone says or does anything to Romo or Witten, you will be the on the first bus to El Paso.
The Dallas Cowboys are & were never about TO and he just can't let go of that. Parcells never even wanted to discuss
him or know his name.

Since T.O. left we supposedly got rid of all the selfish-diva type of players, shuffled coordinators on both sides of the ball two times over, completely overhauled the roster, and the same functional problems remain. Time has absolved T.O. of any wrong doing, it's clear as day he was never the real problem here. And I'm not going to waste time quoting/responding to posters who think otherwise. He was just one in a line of many who played the role of the scapegoat to protect this buffoon of a head coach we have.

[Translation] I was in my 30's when I became a Cowboy and was immature up until that point. Back then, I kinda thought I had gotten a tiny grip on my own nonsense finally but I was lying to myself. See? I'm still running off at the mouth about stuff that supposedly happened seven years ago.

Idiot.

I think it's an interesting scenario.

The thing with TO was that he was honest to a fault. So, if he had a problem with a QB or any player or coach, he would let it be known. As critical of the Cowboys as Stephen A. Smith is, he had a hard time believing that TO said that because Smith had known TO and knew that he wouldn't just be saying this behind closed doors.

To me, it shows the lack of professionalism of ESPN. TO refused to talk to Mr. Blue Suit to the point where he was making Mr. Blue Suit the butt of the joke by saying 'next question' every time Mr. Blue Suit asked him a question. This all stemmed from Mr. Blue Suit claiming that TO was crying on the sidelines after the 2008 game against the Bengals when TO caught the winning TD as Mr. Blue Suit claimed 'he was crying because he was upset that he didn't get the ball enough.' It was later found out that TO was crying because a close family friend that he had known all of his life had passed away earlier that week and he had dedicated the game to him and caught that winning TD. Mr. Blue Suit never offered an apology or a retraction. And that's when TO started to embarrass Mr. Blue Suit publicly.

Subsequently, the article from Mr. Blue Suit came out where 'an anonymous source close to the team' was claiming this nonsense. It never crossed Mr. Blue Suit's editor's mind (nor did he likely even care) that there was a conflict of interest. There was a rift between the two and Mr. Blue Suit suddenly coming up with this article should have been, at the very least, suspicious. And standard journalism practices dictate that you should get at least 3 sources when reporting a rumor like this one.

They didn't and ESPN got their ratings and Web site clicks because people bought into this hook, line and sinker. And in the end, it cost TO his job. All because Mr. Blue Suit couldn't take TO ignoring him and the other reporters laughing at him which in essence was his fault for falsely reporting a story (again, for the millionth time).

I think if anything, Garrett has proven to be a 'politician' in the world of football. He probably learned that from his dad who was an assistant and a scout, but never really propelled into the upper echelon of coaching with a coordinator job or HC job. Also, having graduated from Princeton he was probably exposed to the politicking in that world. It wasn't too long ago that Jesse Holley, a generally well thought of player, accused Garrett of sabotaging the 2010 season so Wade Phillips could get fired. And there was the tension between Garrett and Bill Callahan over the play calling duties as well as accusations of Wade wanting Mike Solari as the O-Line coach and Garrett wanting Hudson Houck and then Garrett rumored to have taken pot shots at Wade for wanting Dom Capers to be the D-Coordinator while Wade was the HC.

Either way, the TO situation in Dallas was never built to last. Like with Greg Hardy, the media doesn't care nearly as much if a controversial player is playing for another team other than the Cowboys. And the media loves their Eagles and Andy Reid, whom TO spurned. As one reported Front Office staffer said after TO's release, his actions in themselves were not a real problem. But, just his presence would cause such a media crap storm that you couldn't help them from being a distraction...even when he did absolutely nothing wrong. It's too bad that hacks like Mr. Blue Suit can get away with this, scot free.
