Running Surface
As you may know, the Indianapolis Colts and the RCA Dome have replaced the old Astroturf 11 surface with the new and improved Field Turf, a permanent surface that covers the entire Dome floor. In the inaugural season on this new surface, the Colts set many records and proved time and again to be as fast as ever on the Field Turf.

In December of 2005, NFL Combine representatives, the Indianapolis Colts and the RCA Dome evaluated the possibility of using a portion of the old Astroturf for Combine timing. A strip of the old surface was affixed in a variety of manners, and athletes were tested on all of them. The tests concluded that the new Field Turf surface was not only safer, but also faster for running 40’s, skill drills and all shuttles. This was further validated by the times and performances during the 2006 Combine. All physical tests and drills at the 2007 NFL Scouting Combine will again be performed on the Field Turf.

The NFL teams will be evaluating athlete times and performances based on what they see on this field, not on comparisons to previous years. Additionally, some teams adjust Astroturf times (making them slower) to better equate them to game like surfaces (grass). Since Field Turf is now the game surface for many NFL teams and is considered equal to grass in most NFL perspectives, times will be more accurate and less likely to be adjusted. In discussing the issue with many NFL team executives, a common belief is that ‘fast athletes’ run fast on all surfaces, and ‘slow athletes’ come up with excuses not to run. Please keep in mind that NFL personnel are experienced at evaluating player speeds on any number of surfaces and are as interested in how athletes compete on a big stage as they are with the actual timed result.

Many athletes have asked what shoes are best to use on the Field Turf. As each athlete is different, it would be a good idea to test a variety of cleats and running shoes on a similar surface and decide which shoes are the best for you. Please visit the web site listed below to learn more about the actual surface and to find locations across the country of similar surfaces that you can use in your preparation. Track shoes and spikes will not be allowed for any of the testing. We suggest bringing a variety of cleats and shoes with you to have available at your discretion.

First time I've ever seen him without football equipment on - He's freaking huge build wise. Looks like a linebacker.

I am stunned bye how quick people gave up on Watkins ....
True, he's only had a year. He didn't seem too rangy but it could be the "Vanilla" scheme he was in.

Well, he did leave the Senior Bowl with an injury about half-way through the week. I don't recall what it was, but that's a quick turnaround on any injury that takes you out of the game.

Hopefully his stock drops considerably and we can snag him in the late 2nd or 3rd.

Mayock broke his tape down - it wasn't pretty. The basic premise was that he lacked the required explosiveness, had the attitude for press coverage but not the physical skills.

Looks like he'd really only fit a constant cover2 scheme.

Who do you consider the top 2 CBs coming out this year?

Everyting I had read pegged him as a pretty fantastic cover corner. Weird. Not an impressive showing today, that's for sure.

I've heard Mayock say some pretty stupid things before. I wouldn't take his word as the gold standard (or even mildly persuasive).

I realize he could find tape on anyone to make them look bad but there was more than enough film shown that showed he wasn't very explosive/quick and then putting up a time that would have been disappointing for a linebacker really seemed to prove his point then add that I don't think his vertical was 30 inches.

He's either injured or is looking at the second day.
