This is really cool.

I am guessing it is a bi-weekly check which would amount to a little more than $60k after taxes assuming he was paid for the full year. It is impossible to figure out his salary from this check though because it depends on tax deductions and exemptions he filed. But the tax rates in 1966 topped of at 70% for any income over $100,000. The tax rate for $60,000 was 64%! Of course they had more deductions back then so most people's AGI was much lower than their gross income.

Seems like Landry was underpaid. But a new car in 1966, say a Ford Galaxie convertible cost under $2500. A new house cost under $25,000 on Average. If Landry was pulling down $50k in 1966 he was doing okay because the median household income in 1966 was about $7400.

Wasn't he married? If he made 60k a year I think the taxes were around 50%.

His first contract in 1960 was $34,500.00 a year
This would have been his second contract
His last was a million a year

If that's a weekly game check its not bad for back then.

The check is dated May 1966 so don’t think it’s a game check. I assume they start getting game checks once the regular season starts but I’m not sure. It was probably different back then compared to now. Players and coaches nowadays get their money wired to their accounts.

Stephen may use this in future negotiations.

If it was good enough for Tom Landry.....
Stevie will even throw in a $10 voucher and a 35 cent koozie from Mike Fisher's Maverick Bar 2 sweeten the deal.:muttley:

Curious as to the team's DBA title on the check - what is the official title of the franchise now?
5738 N. Central Expressway; any Dallasite knows what is located at that address today?

I know business is business-- but for 29 years of the utmost dedication to his position as head coach -
and to ease the sting of the firing - perhaps Jones could have gifted Landry 2 or 3% ownership for building that expansion team into an iconic sports franchise known around the world?

Wow -- that's quite a drastic difference from what it'd be today -- of course, the buck went farther back then than it does now!

Yeah, you could buy a brand new car for $3,000. LOL....Gas was around 19 cents per gallon. Fill it up from empty with 4 bucks. Times have changed...(sigh)...

I would think that should have came from the owners he worked for but he certainly deserved it
