Tom Landry Stadium---You can make it happen

A corporation will back away from a naming rights bid if they are told by the owner of the stadium (in this case jerry Jones) that it needs to be named a certain way. Jerry is all about making money and he's not going to force any part of "Tom Landry" down a corporation's throat. Trust me on that.
Like Invesco Field at Mile High Stadium where the Broncos play?

Nah, a corp will do it if they get enough signage and the money's right.

I still like my idea of 2 Rings of Honor

The higher ring = Hall of Famers

The lower ring = Ring of Honor players

If you are in the ROH and you go to the HOF, your name moves up....

IMO.....there should be roughly 16 names already for the HOF ring come 2009 and about the same for the ROH...

Names that should be in the HOF ring (Bold = already in HOF)
  1. Tom Landry
  2. Tex Schramm
  3. Bob Lilly
  4. Roger Staubach
  5. Randy White
  6. Tony Dorsett
  7. Mel Renfro
  8. Rayfield Wright
  9. Troy Aikman
  10. Michael Irvin
  11. Cornell Green
  12. Ed "Too Tall" Jones
  13. Harvey Martin
  14. Chuck Howley
  15. Ed Niland
  16. Ralph Neely
  17. Bob Hayes
  18. Charlie Waters
  19. Cliff Harris
  20. Drew Pearson
  21. Larry Allen
  22. Emmitt Smith
Names that should be in the ROH (Bold = already in ROH)
  1. Lee Roy Jordan
  2. Don Meredith
  3. Don Perkins
  4. Everson Walls
  5. Tony Hill
  6. Herschel Walker
  7. Daryl Johnston
  8. Jay Novacek
  9. Nate Newton
  10. Mark Tuinei
  11. Danny White
  12. Bill Bates
  13. Mark Stepnoski
  14. Erik Williams
  15. Charles Haley
  16. Deion Sanders
  17. Darren Woodson
  18. Jimmy Johnson (Coach)
  19. Jim Jeffcoat
  20. Tony Tolbert
  21. Greg Ellis

In Cleveland, none of the three major-league teams play in stadiums with corporate names.

Of course nothing is permanent...When the Gund's sold the Cavs... the new owners sold the naming rights as Quicken Loans Arena. While we could succeed in getting it named after Landry...nothing's to say years down the road it couldn't be changed. At which point we could rally and burn the place down.

The owners of the baseball and basketball teams agreed in the late 1980s to contribute $14 million over 20 years toward construction of the facilities to honor their family names.

Perhaps years from now, when the new stadium gets a few miles on it....and it gets a face lift...Stephan could rename it after Jerry. Face lift, Jerry....gawd I slay me.

Anyhoo, the wife and I are signed in. Good luck.

Coach Landry has the statue and the ROH induction. In Jerry's mind, that's enough.

The statue and ring induction is more than enough. No need to deify the man.

I had a thought about how we could get this petition to really get going strong-- I'm planning on e-mailing anybody who covers the Cowboys I can think of with a link to the petition... if enough of us do that, one or more of those mediots might give it some free publicity...

I encourage anybody who thinks this is a good idea to get to e-mailing...

this has my full support.

again, i point to the browns.

cleveland browns stadium....all the gates are sponsored by different businesses.

everyone wins.

I would have thought the last thing we wanted to copy was the Cleveland Browns.

I would agree especially since he hasn't coached us since his 3-13 year in 1988 and has no tie to the present team whatsoever.

[edit] But his ties to the franchise are unquestionable. The stadium is a symbol of the franchise, not to any particular era, but for all-time. Are we to minimize or forget the man who made the Dallas Cowboys, THE Dallas Cowboys? Is this a generational thing for what?

I have set up an online petition to try and get Jerry Jones to Consider naming the new stadium Tom Landry Stadium.

We have over 9,000 users here.

I would like to keep it active til Thanksgiving and I will then FedEx the petition to him. PLease read the petition and sign it.

Landry desrves this honor just as Curly Lambeau did for the Packers and Paul Brown for the Bengals.

Together, Cowboy Nation can get it done.

Here's the link.

no but deifying him isn't necessary either

No one is deifying him. We are simply trying to enact something that has been granted to other great coaches and founders of great franchises.

In what way will he be 'deified'? "By having a STADIUM named after him"??? I think we're a long way from breaking the first Commandment here. Shoot, there would be a huge LAUNDRY list of deified individuals if the sole criteria is because something has been named for them.

Why not name it Jimmy Johnson Stadium then? At least he never lost a championship game or a Super Bowl.

It is a nice idea but will never fly so why waste time on it?

To simply reach a Super Bowl is a huge accomplishment. Landry accomplished that task five times. He was also a key reason why the franchise's record of consecutive winning seasons may never be touched again in NFL history. No disrespect to Johnson, but his accomplishments pale in comparison to Landry's.

This IS a generational thang.

You don't know if it'll fly unless you take a shot... but for sure, it'll never fly if we let you cynics sway us...

If you don't like the idea, don't take part in it, but is it REALLY necessary to p*ss on our parade??

Hardly generational, I was around for Tom Landry, both the good AND the atrociously bad in the end.

I just don't live in the past.
