Tony Dorsett said it where nobody else did

Probably so -- ordinarily, we'd have a 5th round pick but not so this year as I understand it. A 4th would likely be too early to spend on that position and a 6th might well be too late to get a QB of any great qualities (unless we'd be stunningly fortunate.) I think we'll most likely be spending our picks on more desperately needed positions for the first four rounds, unless an exceptionally good value at QB might fall to us later. Unlikely.
We should trade one of our comp picks for 2018 to get a 5th this year

I would not count on Tony coming back, should we call him. CBS may not allow for it, if what we hear is accurate about the money being offered from CBS. I think it would be unwise to depend on a Rookie coming in and being able to back up Dak. What are the chances lightning strikes twice, with regards to rookie QBs?
Have not seen $ discussed as far as CBS, Care to divulge? I'm sure Tony has an out in his contract were that to occur. Certainly would make for some excellent copy...

I really thought that once Romo was released and in a booth, that that'd be the end of it. Unfortunately, it looks like the ghost of Romo will still linger on for the foreseeable future..
Some can't let him go. No way does Tony leave the booth this season. If he comes back at all it will be in the offseason and it won't be for us.

I read 3 pages in this thread looking for the answer myself. Wth has Dorsett got to do with Romo and next backup QB?
cooter brown: by about 3pm yesterday when everyone was talking about tony romo, espn nfl live went to dorsetts house live for a comment. why him I don't know but they did. when asked his thoughts he said "who's going to be our back up now?" thatz what I wondered all day. not all the speculation like what's going on this page. as soon as I heard about yesterday's news about 8am central time my first thought was about the team. who's going to be the backup qb? that was tony dorsett's first words. he had it right. ok, tony romo good luck! but now what for the team?
and again, if itz Kellen moore then this group of coaches are not championship caliber. I was begging jerry jones to bring back tony romo as backup this year. pay him the money and have him back up. there's too many examples of title teams where the backup played a major role. now i'm convinced tony romo's health was the determining factor. not playing or the money plus he was offered a great offer by cbs...

People can't let it go.

He is not going to play again unless he really sucks at broadcasting. Once you let yourself give in to "retire", it is incredibly difficult emotionally to return regardless of occupation.

CBS would most certainly allow Romo to pursue his dream of once again QB'ing for the Cowboys if that opportunity came available to him. It's a story no one with any brains is going to get in the way of. Romo winning in the playoffs and maybe a SB is pure gold.

Yeah plus CBS will get the exclusive when it's all done. Win win for them and everyone else..

I don't know enough to "divulge" anything. Only that Tony said something to the effect that the offer from CBS was too good to pass up. That would lead me to believe that it was better then what he could make from the Cowboys plus whatever he could get from a team who might sign him.

No kidding, I was stumped as well. Like you, I don't watch much ESPN anymore either. I will admit, I do during the draft and during March Madness but other then that, not so much. ESPN has gone down a long way, in my view, from the good old days of just broadcasting sports. JMO..

I'm not worried about the backup QB spot, but I also believe that Dallas will add another QB via the draft or after the draft when teams cut some vet. QB's.

Kellen Moore is as good or bad as any back-up QB in the league. Brandon Weeden? TJ Yates?

1. Romo was never going to be the backup for Dallas this season. If he wasn't going to get an opportunity to win the starting job, he was going to retire.
2. Like most teams, if our backup QB has to start, we're probably SOL anyway. With the dearth of starting QBs in the league, having a good backup is more about luck or investing a decent draft pick in one.

God help us if Moore has anything more than mop-up duty this season.

That is a real myopic way of looking at things

We went from having 2 top QBs under contract for 14.6.m to one.......just because everyone else sucks that doesn't make it better or a desirable outcome
