..sad thing appears. These guys are no Emmit, Payton, Dickerson, Dorsett, Sanders etc. They are avg Joes, playing to market monikers.

Barkley's career earnings will be almost $50,000,000 by the end of this season, with more to come.

It’s not even directly about the CAP.
It’s not just about the longevity, injuries, or how fast RBs can stop being worth their salaries.
It’s the modern analytics. Every owner, GM, and coach knows that no matter how great or average a RB is, the studies show that RBs don’t significantly impact the outcome of games. Every team sport has the facts on how positions impact actual wins over the replacement player. We can all rank the starting RBs from best to worst, but the analytics say that the RB doesn’t have much impact on wins vs losses Or points scored. It’s the OL, the threat of the pass, the scheme fit, and the coach/play-calling.

No matter what our eyes and logic tell us about the difference between Derek Henry of Tennessee and Pacheco of KC, the analytics prove that the next “qualified” starter in line won’t significantly increase or decrease the win total. The QB, Left Tackle, WR, coach, and overall OL effectiveness all impact wins and losses more than the RB/TE positions.
Yeah but the thing is essentially most positions get paid and fall off. Running backs are the poster child but they are not the only ones. Quarterbacks and offensive linemen seem to have some longevity. Wide receivers also get paid and fall off a cliff it seems.

I believe a blue ribbon panel should be organized by the Human Fund to further investigate this miscarriage of justice. I’ve seen oppression in my life but these salaries being offered to running backs is akin to indentured servitude……my heart is breaking

thoughts and prayers to these victims.

The NFL is so pass intensive now, that I dont see the positional value of HB's rebounding. If you get lucky, you are a in a situation like Zeke or Henry were in when he got extended and your team absolutely needs you in order to be competitive
Agreed. I admit it's sad. But the reason teams aren't paying market value is because they don't believe the RB is worth market value at the time. It's like trying to force someone to like you. Can't be done.

That said, I think of all of the RBs, Barkley had the most leverage. But apparently he was asking for too much.

Under career earning total cash, Barkley is at 38M, Pollard just shy of 4M. If anyone needs that 2nd contract..........

We are currently organizing a fund raising drive to raise money for the affected running backs and their cause. Bake Sale, Silent Auctions, Tupperware parties as well as a Go fund me page are being utilized to combat this tragedy and raise the urgently needed money

our main goal is to ensure that no running back goes without a new Bentley in 2023 so please give as much as you can.

Like Whitney Houston taught us all, “Financially helping the running backs of the NFL is the greatest love of All”…….and so easy to achieve

Agreed. I believe you can and should pay an elite tackle, an elite receiver or TE named Kelce. Pay an elite CB or DL. You have to pay an above average QB unless your team stinks and is rebuilding. But most other starters, even if they are solid to very good, you try to work a comfortable deal, but if you can’t, you draft his successor and let him walk. Martin is an elite RG, but is an elite RG worth top of the market money when an above average solid RG is ready? If we have no other starting caliber RG, then give Martin top money, but Martin is not going to increase your number of wins over a guy who’s on a tier below him. Jerry’s problem has long been paying all his starters and then not having capable backups.

I imagine all those guys asking Christian McCaffery for advice on getting a new contract, and him awkwardly saying “have you tried running routes like a WR and playing in an offense tailored to your skillset?”

But seriously, this is the way the NFL is headed. Ground and pound teams are not winning Super Bowls these days - teams with great pass catching backs and TEs are.

RBs should probably start training with WR coaches in the offseason, because unless you’re a monster like Derrick Henry, being a classic bell cow is just becoming less important.

I was a season ticket holder for the 84 & 85 Houston Gamblers. They had a tremendous quarterback and an offense that was designed around passing. The QB rarely ran with the ball unless he was running for his life. Two wideouts, two slots, and instead of a traditional running back they simply used the tight end as a running back. He once rushed for 246 yards in a game when the opponent went all out to stop the pass. That tight end went on to play for the Cowboys, as a reserve tight end after the USFL folded. As NFL teams continue to emphasize the pass game running backs should be able to read the writing on the wall. That was 40 years ago. The more critical you are to the pass game, or stopping the other team’s pass game, the more you’re going to be paid.

If this page is to be believed, a couple of things about average positional salaries surprised me:
- RBs (and FBs) are paid lower than any other position except punter and long snapper. I thought the RB numbers might be headed towards OG and Center territory, but those line positions are already quite a bit higher.
- Cornerbacks on average are paid less than kickers, and are lowest on defense.

Upon reflection, though, it makes sense that positions at which you go deep like CB (including just special-teams guys) will tend to be lower than something like K where you only have your starter on the roster.
