Tony Romo buys into new conditioning philosophy
Sporting News staff reports

It appears that Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is getting the message that he has a few things to fix, including coming into training camp in better shape, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

This offseason, offensive coordinator Jason Garrett told his quarterback that he was "bottom heavy" and he needed to be in better shape at the beginning of the season in order to be able to finish the season strong.

In camp on Monday, Romo sounded like he took the constructive criticism to heart: "I don't know why you wouldn't look at yourself from an honest perspective every time you go into the off-season and say, 'What do I need to do?' Back in February, when we started going at this thing, you look at tape, you look at yourself and you say, 'What did I not do successful or what hurt me this season when I was out on the football field?' You have to be really harsh sometimes on yourself, and you ask questions from people you trust."

Romo said Monday that one of his conditioning goals is "to be the same in September as you are in December ... as an individual and as a team."

It did appear that Romo wasn't in the best of shape at times last year.

Your QB should be the hardest working one in the weight room. Tom Brady wins hardest worker each year in the Pats offseason program. Great QBs are gym rats and film rats.

Remember one of BPs QB commandments, something about "Squat, Fat QBs Don't Win Championships".

I think we can all blame Jessica for his heavy bottom...

(sarcasm)

Also, I didn't think Romo was referring to his conditioning when talking about doing things better in start of season and in end. He actually said he wont go into detail when pressed to explain what changes he will do this season...

I think he is referring to Romo's lack of elusiveness the past two seasons. It seems as if Romo was getting sacked more towards the end of both seasons.

Heh, he must have forgot that last year Romo and TO were the only people on this team....

I'm not going to bother to explain why nonsense is nonsense to you. And nobody said anything about TO. TO plays in Buffalo now because he has a big mouth and is a bad teammate.

Word from Valley Ranch is Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett had a come-to-Jesus meeting with QB Tony Romo this off-season where he basically told him to get his butt in better shape. Now nobody is accusing Romo of being Val Kilmer, or even Byron Leftwich. The description used was "bottom heavy" and the message was more "We love you but... " than butt kicking. What The Redheaded Genius told him was, basically, become a better finisher. Cowboys coaches believe Romo has a penchant for showing up for training camp in just good enough shape to allow him to get out to a good start in the first half. And it falls apart in the second half because he does. He is not able to outrun the same players. His mistakes go up. He is not the same QB.

Honestly, I was waiting until the "out of shape" idea became an issue. I did think that over the last couple of seasons, Romo just looked pudgy and a bit soft, particularly to end of each season. His turnovers do go up, he drops the ball more, and avoids less pressure.

I felt he needed to hit the weights AND the cardio significantly more to make that next step. He just kind of looked baby-fat smooth in his uniform, and I know he's a QB, but any athlete knows what a difference being in top shape compared to mediocre shape can make. It affects everything.

Happy to see this addressed and happy to see Romo growing in both attitude and work ethic. Also happy to see coaches finally jumping on this, as a coach needs to correct these things.

QB's are a lot like pitchers. They have the gift of an arm. Elway had a horrible physique and he was pretty good. David Wells was a pretty darn good pitcher at what 275lbs with chili on his Yankee uniform??

Tony's in shape...but I agree he does need to work on more fundamentals.

I love the kid though....I will never fault the seasons he's played for us on him though. IMO...Other than Ware...he's the only player I have confidence in... they will give us a shot to win each and every Sunday!

Tom Brady has spaghetti arms. :laugh2:

I've can't think of any QB that is "the" allstar of the entire team in the weight room....maybe in the film room--which refers to Brady. That too is part of the offseason program.

I think part of this has to be less partying. I lost count of the number of pictures and stories I've seen of him out on the town with Jessica and/or friends and it's obvious they are always drinking. I really don't have a big problem because I know I would be doing the same thing if I was in his shoes but it's time to get more serious about being the QB of the Dallas Cowboys, winning playoff games, and contending for the superbowl on a yearly basis. That starts with cutting down on the partying and spending more time in the gym.

I've never heard that before. Maybe when he was very old. In fact, he seemed more athletic and athletically built than most other QBs. I bet he and Aikman were similar in size in their primes....about 6'3 or 6'4 and around 215-220.

Sure you don't mean Plunkett or Jurgenson...or Jared Lorenzen? LOL
