When have the Cowboys ever honored a player the year after he left? Never.

They haven't given out Kyle Orton's jersey number either. So what?

As far as the locker....sure, everybody knows there's a slight chance he could return, so no big deal.

I like that shadow hanging over Dak. Less chance of a sophomore slump or big head developing. ALL quarterbacks have that kind of thing hanging over them in some way.

Not necessarily----you would have to bring him in and teach him an entirely new offense. It's easier said than done when he's been in the same offense for essentially his entire career.

If Romo wanted to win a Super Bowl as a starter---two very good teams were interested. I believe he wanted to play for Dallas or no one instead of starting all over in a new city.
This. He even said so years ago when the subject came up (that being a hired hand was not appealing to him) and than basically said the same thing after accepting at CBS.

Maybe its a good thing that the door is being left ever so slight ajar for Romo. Dak played great with Romo looking over his shoulder last year. This little added pressure just might be good for him.

November 22 2015 was the last time Tony played a full game.

And that was after he missed 2 months. And then he went out and got hurt again. Dak has nothing to worry about with Tony. Even if he came back it wouldn't end well. The Cowboys should look for a quality backup and quit holding onto the past.

I hate to sound like a know-it-all jerk, but rookie receiver Brian Brown now wears Orton's old number 18. Of course, this does not detract from your point, which I agree with.

Romo hasn't had a meaningful snap in close to two years yet he still dominates this board. I just want to enjoy this year.

I guess you didn't watch him play his first game on New Year's Day vs Egals when he lead that TD drive! :muttley:

He's a designated June 1st cut. So still on the roster until tomorrow?

I really thought we were done with this

It's just respect paid to a veteran and surefire Ring of Honor inductee in the future. You don't just give away his locker and number to some camp body scrub who won't even be in the league in 4 months.

I watched Vinny Testerverde at age 40 something come in during the middle of the week and win a game so I'm sure if Tony had to he could probably come in at any time and play at a fairly high level.

He could play at a high enough level to win, that's for sure. Moreso than bums like the McCown brothers or Kellen Moore.

His number has also not been given out per ESPN.

Considering Jerry Jones publicly came out and said Romo is not retired a few weeks ago only adds more fuel to the fire that he is really our backup QB.

I remember a Romo interview a few years ago when he said he would rather not win a Super Bowl with Dallas than go somewhere else and win one...at the time you would think that's all talk but it seems he is serious.

I still wouldn't count on it if I was Dallas but it does seem very likely that Romo and Jerry have a gentlemen's agreement.

  • At some point the Cowboys will honor Tony Romo, but it might have to wait until the quarterback officially decides to retire. Or at least go through his first season with CBS. But they have honored him in an indirect way so far. Nobody is wearing No. 9 on the current roster and unless they had a quarterback with an affinity for the number, it could be a while before they choose to give out the number. Nobody wears No. 12 because of Roger Staubach. Nobody wears No. 8 because of Troy Aikman. Inside The Star, the Cowboys have yet to move a player into Romo’s old locker, either. That could change. Coach Jason Garrett has put team leaders at different corners of the locker room, but Romo’s spot remains vacant.
So dumb and disrespectful to a Dak Prescott that gave us everything we asked for and plenty more last year.

Just dumb...

Ok. So if he's going into the ROH.. Fine. Don't give his number out. But holding his locker is just idiocy IMO...

To be blunt its TONY that deserves the respect more than a player that has only been here ONE YEAR.

Now I would not put it past the boys to be using this to prod Dak even though from all appearances he does not need it.

And only an idiot would discount the possibility of him coming back if Dak were to have a season ending injury.

Romo's no longer with the team and an object that he is no longer actively connected with is the subject of fan consternation?

I think the only way Romo comes out of retirement is if Dak gets hurt for an extended period of time and we have a legit shot of getting into the playoffs.

Wait.

Let me analyze it from a different angle.

Turning sideways.

Yep.

Still lame.
