You don't think the offensive line matters to a team's passing effectiveness?

So we drafted O linemen to make Romo more effective and add to the 2nd best career QB rating in the NFL? That doesn't make any sense and it's not even logical when the team/HC have claim they didn't run because they couldn't run due to an aging and inferior OL which took years to rebuild.

And if the team thought having one back getting almost all of the carries was important, don't you think it would have re-signed Murray OR drafted a "lead" running back OR signed a free agent whose career high was more than 223 carries? Instead, the team did none of those. Why is that?

The Cowboys had visits with 10 RB's prior to this years draft. Without counting, that may be the highest number of visits/interviews for any position group. When Gregory fell to them in the 2nd, the value was too good to pass up which could have very well changed their draft strategy/plans and they didn't see the RB value where they were picking.

No doubt Jerry himself said that D was the off-season priority and he had a good off-season last year so he's earned the benefit of the doubt, at least from me. But I can still disagree with the idea that McFadden/Randle can be the #1 RB. We had a formula that worked, not just because of Murray, but because of our philosophy. You feel that an effective running game has no bearing on an effective passing game or the game's outcome. That's just crazy talk.

So your standard for success is being better than 8-8? Wow.

And denying the importance of an effective running game to last years success is an even greater "wow" moment, as is you knocking Murray's contribution to a 12 and 4 season because we didn't go to the SB.

Right...the big bad Murray alone is what made this team go 12-4. If only Murray did not fumble at the wrong time...but it was not his fault, he led this team to 12-4. I'm not sure this team can compete this season without him.

Now, if Murray would have played a few down on defense, Rodgers would have been sacked at least 12 times!

I'm not saying Murray did it alone but I won't deny he's a very good RB either. I also won't minimize what he did here and his contribution to our 12 and 4 regular season by thinking we could just plug and play anyone behind this OL.

Murray priced himself out of Dallas; there's no denying that and I don't blame the team for not giving up the money the Eagle's did. But this pimping of McFadden who thus far has been a bust, not to mention Randle who the team thought so much of they barely used him to spell Murray and keep him fresh is insane.

big mistake not keeping murray is what it is looking like.]
Had they kept murray they would be set for a run right now instead of changing what worked last year.
The FO had a great off season, but not keeping murray was the one stupid thing they did .
Murray wasnt perfect, but he was well rounded, and knew all the plays formations etc, hard worker, stayed out of trouble,
And they threw all that out the window over a couple of million.

It wasn't a big mistake considering what Murray wanted.
They aren't going to change what worked last year.
Again they weren't going to pay Murray $8M.
He wasn't perfect that is why he isn't worth $8M.
A lot of people suspect the only reason the Cowboys offered $6M was so they could send a message they tried to keep him when they knew he would turn that offer down. The Cowboys only offered $4M so really they lost Murray over $4M.

The Dez decision must be made before training camp, per the CBA. If they don't sign him to a long term deal by 15 July, then they have no choice but to let him play the year under the tag.

The distinct possibility is that like with Murray..

they let him walk after this seasom.
We have every position on the team set with good starters and good backups, other than 2 positions (RB/1-tech). Those two positions happen to be the most easily replaceable and least impactful positions on the offense and defense, respectively.

Despite that pretty rare accomplishment, we are still both (1) a young team and (2) not in cap hell.

The front office deserves kudos, not panic.

I think the overall difficult difference in this team is..

it's belief in its OC and DC.

The team has the old Jimmy Johnson system beliefs that it's the schemes and playcalling coming from them in Linehan and Marrinelli that makes the difference.

That if they stay faithful to that..

then the players are not mission critical.

They are more interchangeable.

That's why the lack of panic with the RB issue.

And why they are working with guys like Hardy and others with checkered pasts.

Back to the Future should be our new mantra.

Receiver and RB's should never be paid ridiculous money. As good as Dez and Murray are, overpaying them is bad team management. If Dez wants like 16 million per year, then see ya. Franchise him for a few years and say goodbye. Defense, Oline, QB are where you need to spend the money on a football team.

yeah if your going to sign rice the thing to do would be to sign him early so he could get in shape and learn offense.
I think the owners all agreed to give him a year or 2 off before anyone of them will sign him.
It would be a unofficial ban.

The league had to reinstate him but that doesn't mean anyone has to sign him. Wouldn't surprise me if all 32 teams have agreed to stay away from him. The NFL doesn't want anything to do with him. Rice has become the poster boy for domestic violence his actions in that elevator caused a rule change, TV ad campaign and made the commissioner look bad. The longer Rice is away from the game the less likely anyone will sign him. Sitting out multiple seasons spending time trying to repair his image with no team activities at his age will diminish his skills. He won't be ready mentally or physically with everything he's had to deal with. Him returning after 2 yeas isn't going to soften anyone's view of him all it will do is bring back everything that happened and will cause a huge distraction and backlash for any team that signs him.

It could cost a team sponsors and no one is going to want to deal with the public outcry. During games Rice will be heckled by opposing crowds and even amongst his teams own fan base. He would create more problems than he's worth and he plays a position that isn't as coveted as it once was. You have to consider what damage he could do to the chemistry in a locker room because some players are going to have issues with him. It's going to be very difficult for Rice to ever overcome what he did in that elevator. Everyone saw it and it went way past the NFL making national news. There's a lot of people who don't follow the NFL that only know the name Ray Rice because of that incident that gave the NFL a black eye.

I wouldn't consider the Raiders great talent evaluators to begin with. Any move they make...... I'd assume the opposite is probably the better move.

McFadden was the 4th overall pick in 08 everyone including the Raiders had him rated very high. The Raiders know McFadden better than anyone he spent 7 years in Oakland and had injury issues almost every season. All 32 teams had access to McFadden's game film and the Cowboys contract offer to him points to how little interest the rest of the league had in him. All we can hope for is that McFadden will stay healthy and step up and seize the opportunity .

His best success was in college as part of a rotation with Felix Jones. I'm not ruling out that he can have success with the Cowboys. McFadden understands that if he fails in Dallas behind arguably the best OL in the league he's going to likely be done in the NFL. He's going to have plenty of motivation playing for the team he rooted for as a kid so I don't expect him to be a flop unless the injury bug keeps biting him. I'm not expecting 1500 yards from him but I do think he can contribute as part of a committee.

That lack of interest in McFadden was largely because (1) most teams are set at running back, and (2) the league doesn't value running backs, especially older ones with an injury history.

Dallas got a hometown discount. He wants to play close to home, and he wants a shot behind that line. If this doesn't resurrect his career, then it's over.

Most teams rotate backs so they need more than one back regardless if they're set at the starting position. Had someone offered McFadden a lucrative deal there would have been no hometown discount.

McFadden has made tens of millions. His priority is to shed his label as a bust and he wanted to play for the Cowboys. It seems obvious in interviews that money was not his motivation He sees this OL and knows the OL coach and wants to have success on the field that he could not have on that mess of a team in Oakland.

This promises to be a longer summer than usual with optimism brimming over and pom-poms dripping from every thread around here. Such is what 12-4 brings, especially after watching it take a perverse referee interpretation to shut it down.

But some needed house cleaning hangs over Valley Ranch, and it needs to be done. Too much hope and potential to let these things linger much longer.
DEZ BRYANT: Get Dez signed, or not. Whoever is holding this up needs a frying pan to the forehead. He's not going anywhere, nor does he want to, and the Calvin Johnson contract was a stupid thing done by a stupid franchise. Both sides need to step forward and get it done, or put this to bed before training camp and call the long-term deal off. This need not hang over training camp. Sign him or franchise him, but put it to bed before camp. Do it now, or just walk away from the table until next offseason.

RUNNING BACKS: I'm convinced now that this running back situation thing is more concerning to coaches than they let on. The Ben Tate and Felix Jones tryouts weren't for just camp bodies. They're worried. Joseph Randle only runs one basic set of plays out of one formation, and I don't think the coaches have a lick of faith in him. Darren McFadden is not a feature back in their eyes either, and while I think they like Ryan Williams the most as a player, they certainly don't have hopes of him staying healthy as a lead horse. Teams that feature the run this much need a bellcow. Running back by committee is fine for pass-oriented teams, but not for what this team has become. I'm also convinced they didn't see Demarco Murray as the answer either.
Otherwise, it's Romo for 40+ passes a game again, and I know they don't want to expose him again to that punishment.

Part of me thinks Minnesota and Peterson are playing nice right now because they need to drive up his value before the Vikings will even consider a trade. They rightly can't sell a third-round pick to their fan base, so unless somebody comes forward with a meaty offer, that won't happen. Likewise, anyone of value who's younger is not going to be available for a song.

McClay and company know they have to address this, but so much of it is out of their control if they don't turn loose of high picks and good players, neither of which they want to do. I sense a little panic setting in here, and I'm not buying the happy face they're trying to put on this.

GREG HARDY: Obviously, this one's out of their control, but they want answers asap. Judge Henderson is taking his sweet time on this ruling, and I'm sure they want to get on to the federal courts to get this finalized. This lends itself to the possibility that a negotiation is going on because the NFL is going to look even more stupid when another ruling is completed overturned by the federal courts. Yes, the league wants to show a tough face on domestic violence, but they also need to show that they have an elementary grasp of the rules they have in place (and had at the time of the incident) if they want to be taken seriously as a governing body for player rules violations. They don't want every ruling going to federal court, and that's the precedent they're setting.

I think the Cowboys privately believe this is a 0-2 game suspension by rule, and they're OK to just sit back and "support the league's decision" as Hardy and the NFLPA takes this through the process. Our opinions of the matter aside, the rules were the rules at the time, and by that measure, this is actually should be just a slap on the wrist, and the NFL knows it. But with the intense focus on this issue after Ray Rice, they're trying to make something of substance stick.

The Cowboys need resolution here so they can build the roster and strategize accordingly.

BRANDON CARR: There's no doubt that Carr is overpaid, but there's also no doubt the Cowboys need him. Leverage belongs to Carr. Claiborne's health issues and the Cowboys logical desire to play Byron Jones as a free safety make Carr a vital piece to next season, and with a pass rush, he'll be a much better player. Still, that's an ugly cap hit with more looming behind it. I think he wins in the end, but they need to put it to bed in June.

For the life of me I can't see why Dez isn't a Cowboy for life yet!!!

Because he insists on CJ money, and that isn't going to happen.

The Cowboys have no reason to call him. This will get done in the 11th hour on July 15th, or he'll sign his tag and that will be it.

Obviously money wasn't his motivation he knew he wouldn't be offered much. He was a free agent a couple of years ago and received no interest forcing him to sign a one year deal with the Raiders. I don't care how many millions he's made had someone offered him a huge deal with a lot of guaranteed money he would have taken it. The Cowboys contract proves they're not banking on him and if he doesn't produce in 2015 his career could be over. No way does he pass up a lucrative deal with some good guaranteed money for what could be a one year stint with the Cowboys.

McFadden is only 27 he didn't get offered squat for all the reasons I mentioned.

He's got a lot to prove for sure. But most teams are set at running back. No demand at all.

New England got Blount for a song. Lots of backs just sitting out there with no phone calls.

Most teams are set but not all teams and McFadden would be looked at more as a backup than a starter especially with his injury history. He may end up being a backup with the Cowboys we'll just have to wait and see. Wish some of you would stop mentioning NE they're not nearly as dependent on a RB as the Cowboys. They've won SB's with several average backs because everything they do revolves around Brady.

Dallas offered him a nice contract, so there was interest from other teams obviously. He just has to make the team. Teams rightly didn't want to guarantee anything until they saw it. Here's his chance.

I don't expect him to be awesome, but he'll have his moments this year. He'll go 80 a couple of times, just watch.

The question is not if he would have taken a mega contract if offered. The question is if a crap team had offered something like 25% or 50% more.

For example, if he had been offered contracts like Murray (6M Cowboys or 8M Eagles), I think he would have taken the Cowboys offer.
